I was walking down my street this evening I saw some group of guys in a hidden corner of an uncompleted building playing WHOT games ordinarily I felt they are just spending usual time as friends and that they are playing the WHOT game to keep themselves busy while discussing.

But when I got closer to them I discovered that there was a dirty container close to them and inside the container is money they bet for the game they are playing , and if not careful observed you will never believe that they are playing bet games .

My curiosity led me closer to them I was interacting with one of them and at same time observing what they are doing , one thing I observed was that they stake with huge amount and they don’t give you change even when your money requires change instead you will use it and bet for another round.

So at this point I decided to bring it here to know or see different views from different intellects here on why do some people hide just to gamble or if it is the best way to gamble ?.

They may feel comfortable not to gamble in the public and it is possible that they do not see it as hiding but as something just normal for them to do because they may think it is better to let it be that way.

But if gambling is not legal in your country, that means they can not gamble in public.

That place might actually just be conducive environment for them to play their game, away from public views. Don't forget that money is involved, so they might also be thinking about the safety of their money too, so a quiet and safe corner is the real deal.  It seems to me like more of street gambling, where gamblers throw dice on the floor, which to a large extent is played among friends and allies within a street. I've seen this thing often times within my neighborhood, so for me it's pretty a normal thing.

I am not surprised by this because I know such exists and a lot of people do bet on games to win huge amount of money without doing it through a casino or a website. They do that in the hope that their wins are not held and can easily get to understand each other through that game they play.
In some societies, where it is prohibited, people go hidden to bet and also underage also do that by going to hide to play such games. Gambling is prohibited in some countries or some part of some countries, so anyone seen doing it can be penalized, so the best they can do is to go hidden.

it could be that gambling is illegal in your area and hiding in the corner is one way to discreetly do it without attracting much attention from other people, I mean, from my experience, I grew up in an area where people gambling on plain sight and what usually happens is that it attracts attention from people or other gamblers and in the end you'll have a lot of people flocking in one area which is very noticeable.

Maybe they don't want kids to see them gambling. We always want to protect kids so that they won't follow what we are doing and lose their money as early in their lives. The reason for the most part I think is just privacy.

WHOT is not popular in my country. It's kind of a simple rule game. Anyway, not returning the change is just making sure that the player will keep playing the game until he has nothing left or he wins and wants to stop already. Sort of a hostage but it's very common in a local betting shop.

That's betting, from your story I don't think those boys were hiding, they just went to a zone they think will be comfortable and free from distraction as they bet to win. You didn't give the age circle of the boys probably would satisfy your findings, that they were hiding from there parents or elders.

People hide just for some private reasons we can't tell, as far as they place there bets in physical areas I don't consider that hiding,  the only thing possible is not relating the truth that they bet to you.

People might hide their gambling activity because of age, religion, societal beliefs, etc. Underaged gamblers will always gamble secretly because they will face attack from family members and other elders in the society. As a young boy my friends usually gamble in the bus or inside the house when thier parents have gone to work. I also assume that people from nations where gambling are banned might also gamble secretly to avoid punishment from law enforcement agencies. Some religion prohibits gambling which might force some devotee to hide their gambling activity to avoid sanctions from religious leaders. Female gamblers in my country usually keep their betting habit secret because the female gambling is seen as immoral.

Reasons why they can be doing that are either because they are too young to gamble, afraid of what people will think of them when they see them carrying out that action, or they are also convinced within themselves that what they are doing shouldn't be done in the open.
 
There are a lot of reasons for that, none of which is a positive one. If you watch very carefully, people who carry out such forms of gambling activities are either still under their parent's guidance or they are still not earning their own money, so there is a high possibility that the money they gambled with might not be from a good source or that it's meant for something else.

In most of the areas there is a strick rules against gambling therefore gambler never show their gambling habbit to other people and another reason is that society thinks that gambler is not deserving any respect so may be they are hiding their gambling from society.

Gamblers are more conscious about their money so may be they are hiding their money in a box but i think everyone has his own thoughts and we should not talk in a matters of others whether he is hiding his gambling habit or is playing in a public because the risk and reward is just for him.

There are obvious reasons; such activity is not allowed on one's family and culture, legal issues of gambling in your country, it could also be because you're not  proud of what you are doing and that you are having feelings of embarassment whenever others learn that you gamble, or you are avoiding other people to know because they might have an idea that you're rich from your winnings in this industry. However, regardless of the reason, for sure there's that one thing common to all of the players who does such thing; confidentiality. Not because you hide something, means you are totally ashame of it. You could have your own reason to do so and no one's should be really questioned of it, directly. Gambling is not a simple and small avtivity that is open to ALL people. Of course it has its own restrictions such as one's greed and control of emotion.

Whether you hide it or not, of course that would be because of your own reason.

As an adult, I was never fond of telling people I gamble as I've always felt like the next thing people's gonna wonder is if I'm addicted or not lol. IMO gambling is still heavily stigmatized in our place despite its growing popularity [in our place] or maybe I am way too concious on this lol.

I do agree with @Bravut about people's age groups being a big variable in your example. I also did bets with my friends since I was a little kid and I don't think I was as aware on social perceptions as I am now back then lol.

Lol. I do not think they are hiding to gamble. I think it is just their usual meet up point. Secondly, I think that them not giving you a balance when you wage but would rather that you bet that balance on another round of gamble is their unwritten terms and conditions. Therefore, one must be fully aware of this before they agree to participate in street/corner side gambling. Adding to this, they are not regulated and as such you expect that they a illegal and will be on the security agencies radar if there is a raid on that area.

This story does seem a bit odd to me.  I'm having a hard time fully believing everything about it and  what information are you really trying to find out here? People often gamble secretly because it's illegal or seen negatively.  They make big bets because that's part of the excitement for them.  Did you witness something suspicious going on, or are you just curious about why they were betting so much money? If you want to know more about underground gambling, you can probably find some information online, but be cautious about getting too involved in situations you dont fully understand.

Most people don’t want people to know that they are gambler, and I don’t blame them for that, in most communities, gambling is always taken as bad activities, actually I don’t blame most people that tag gambling as a bad activity, I blame the gamblers for that, if you see some crazy things which addicted gamblers do in the society just because they want to gamble, then you are going to feel bad when you see people gambling. Some addicted gamblers sell properties, they steal from the society just to get money to gamble which is really a bad behavior, things like things are why most people don’t like gambling.

Due to troubles and arguments that erupt from such kind of gambling, the cops don't like seeing roadside gambling by some groups of people. They could be deceptive on other naive passersby who would want to gamble with them, thereby extorting all the player's money using some methods that may never guarantee a win for the naive player. I've listened to a friend's complaint about this type of gambling and how he never won a dime. These players have mastered those Whots and find means of cheating each other, hence they're targets for cops, and that's why most of the time they hide while gambling.

I was once curious about them hiding outside instead of indoors, but it seemed clearer that these players were not close friends and may not have trusted one of them to welcome all the players in his apartment. In pursuit of victims, they also stay in hidden places where they can be seen to attract those who wish to play with them. Hence, it's fine to be observant of gambling activities in your environment. Distancing from such practices is better, playing in a well-known casino or online is quite great for any gambler who wishes to stay clear of troubles or arguments.

What do you expect, they are gambling in public places, and perhaps gambling is illegal in your country that's why they are hiding it. Just really sure what WHOT is but from search is seems that it's a card game so yeah, money could be involved here.

So don't be surprised that they are hiding it in plain sight, and even if gambling is legal to your country, the mere fact that they are doing it publicly, and it cause public disturbance is not good to the police. You just don't know, you already said that huge money is involved already, and just a simple misunderstanding on the player side could result in violence.

There are many reasons for this, gambling could be illegal in the particular jurisdiction a person lives and they need to hide, there could be very negative views held against gamblers even if gambling was legal, some people just like their privacy, gambling itself could be legal but your favorite way to gamble could be illegal, the money those people were betting was obtained to begin with through illegal means and they cannot afford to let anyone else know they have so much money and so on, so as you can see the explanations for this behavior are basically endless.

Exactly, they see gambling as a bad thing because they are addicted to it, and when you are addicted to gambling, whenever you don't have money to bet, you will do anything to get money so that you can bet, and he caused some people to sell all of their properties to just bet, and they are not 100% sure that the game will come, and when he cut them, they will still try to get another money to bet, and he leads to theft and causes you many problems, you can't even have So people urge them to reduce betting so that you won't be addicted to it, and because they don't want to reduce betting, they will be hiding it so that they won't know what is going on,  they will think they are not on bet anymore. What I see on bet even you have source of income when you are addicted to gambling you won't get plan to use your money to do nessasary thing anytime your plan is how to bet in the next match.

Although, maybe the game was played with not quite honest money - and this is the only way to "whitewash" them a little.
