It is very important to have your coins stored safe from any hacker.
It's your coins and you need to protect it.

When you have coins but connected or stored in a online wallet and a hacker connects to your computer, he can steal your coins!

Solution is: try to avoid online wallet and instead only use paper wallet, here from MEW where you can really generate your keys offline where never a hacker can see your private keys because it is always generated offline. Note private and public key on paper, save it at a USB stick and never store it at your computer when it's online.


Always offline creation will give hackers no access to your private key:

MEW offline is even more safe compared to hardware wallet like Ledger or Trezor. At MEW offline, you are creating your private keys yourself and have full control about creating it. Nobody knows which person at Ledger created your private key and if he has noted your private key. Also, when sending a transaction you need to connect Ledger to your online device, if you re-use addresses and a hacker has connected before, you would need to generate completely new address.

To make sure no one hacker could reach your MEW wallet you need to generate the MEW paper wallet on a completely offline device meaning never connect it online.
The only way to do that is by installing an OS like Tails OS before you transfer all MyEtherWallet files into this secured OS and generate a MEW paper wallet.

That's the secure way than generating it from a device that you usually use online even you  transfer the MEW paper wallet by just disconnecting the device to the internet and transferring it to USB it is still not safe so the only way safe is to generate the wallet inside the secured OS and completely offline device.

Paper is degradable, USB sticks are unreliable as they can become unreadable over long periods of time and an offline computer particularly used for Cryptocurrency should not be used online EVER unless you fully wipe the disk and destroy the RAM or clear it if it is even possible.

For the regular user, MEW offline is riskier than a Ledger or Trezor.  I honestly advise every body to use a Hardware Wallet before moving on to more advanced ways of Coin storage.

Please, people.  Stop giving people advice on how to store their Cryptocurrency if you have no idea what you are talking about.  Some people may take this for granted and mess up their methods later on.

If you are new.  Just use a simple storage method such as a Trezor.  No need to move on to advanced methods, you will likely mess up.  Learn the very basics about Ethereum and Cryptocurrencies first.  Slowly progress afterward.

It could be safe saving your backup in usb and only connect it to a computer that isn't connected to internet although I haven't tried it and don't want to do it either and I'd rather do what you have suggested instead of following the OP's advice. Well, atleast OP also advise people to make a backup on a paper and then keep it to yourself which makes it safe although I won't say that it will stay for long so it would be much better if I is laminated with plastic to make it stronger. I'd rather choose write on paper between the two OP choice which is usb stick and write on paper.

Yes offline wallets are the safest option, buh mistakes can still be made using offline wallets.

1. To be sure that you really generate your wallet offline, you must disconnect your hardware/device from the internet before clicking the generate button.

2. Offline generated keys must be stored offline, do not generate the wallet offline and feel like you can store it using a cloud storage, some beginners still believe that cloud storage is a good one, they listen to the words generated by the cloud storage websites, stating that they are the most secured, if they  don't say this, how will they confuse you?

3. USB devices can stop working after a year or two, I don't recommend using them, I have few USB devices that I purchased using Amazon, they don't work anymore, its been 3 years since I bough them, I would rather carve the recovery seed on a steel, stainless to be precise or just write it down in a book.

Mind you, if you can be bold of $2000 invested in crypto, you have no excuse not to buy a hardware wallet, they are similar to offline generated wallets but they have extra security features that makes them worthwhile.
