Quote from: Christian Langalis, “Bitcoin Sign Guy”
When Bitcoiners ask me about the sign, I tell them, “You’d have done the same in my seat.” Yes, only I attended the hearing, drew the sign, and flashed it for the camera. However, it was the network spirit which seized the image and fabricated the memes. The full poetry of the stunt was far beyond my devising, therefore, my attitude can only be one of post-authorship. Bitcoin was massively rupturing into the halls of institutional finance in 2017. Any Bitcoiner worth their sats would have told you so. It’s good to finally liberate this number from my sock drawer and offer it back to the Bitcoin public. The message was subversive then, but now merely obvious: Bitcoin is flowing. Control is dead.

Auction Start: Thursday, April 18, 12 pm ET (16:00 UTC)

Auction End: Wednesday, April 24, 7 pm ET (23:00 UTC)

Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

Crazy how time flies. 2017 feels like just yesterdays, but it was 7 years ago, and I think this was the time Bitcoin had not yet hit $3K!

I read this and laughed
Bitcoin doesn’t need the free advertising. The digital currency has more than doubled in value this year, raising concerns it is entering bubble territory
Bitcoin has been getting free ads from mainstream media for over a decade, though they thought they were FUDing it. I also wonder what happened to the “bubble territory” Perhaps it has now shifted  Grin
I think a bitcoiner is going to try to win the bid. Perhaps some early whale. It would be interesting to see how it goes.

How did the man keep that paper since 2017 and did not throw it away shortly after that?

If he kept it over years, 7 years already, he deserves to any money he get from this auction and this will go to Bitcoin history too. It's not only contributed by this man but after many years, we have supporters in the US. Congress and we are going towards era that we no longer have to fear that Bitcoin will be banned in the USA.

It's a big milestone for Bitcoin and Bitcoin strong adoption nowadays started from somewhere in the past. "Buy Bitcoin" moment is one of impressive moments.

Its an opportunity if we can give it the necessary risk required to make an investment and hold, many people of these category found to be early investors never know bitcoin could get to this far, they invested and hold hoping for a better days ahead, same can still repeated itself today, if we all can invest and in the possible near future to come, we found that bitcoin has valued more than what we expect.

One thing that I just noticed is that as you can see on this photo, the page seems to have been removed from the pad:

But in the bid it looks like the original, attached to the pad:

It can be that the page was simply put on top of the pad to make it look more like the original.

Who would forget that event considering that he obviously pissed off aunt Yellen while she was talking about how printing money is the solution to the financial crisis or whatever she was already talking about. I even had that picture as my avatar for a while Smiley

It doesn't seem to me that the original is identical to what is being sold at the auction. Even then, the original paper was apparently in bad condition (somewhat crumpled), and this current one looks brand new without any signs of use. If I had something like that, I would probably keep it for myself and put it on the wall - but obviously it doesn't go very well for a man if he decides to do something like this.

I think signs like this are best places at museums. I tried to google crypto museums and Bitcoin museums and couldn't unfortunately find any that are offline, so maybe it's something for the future. But there are museums of money, and it's about time for them to have something Bitcoin-related because Bitcoin is a part of the history of money.
The sign doesn't have bids yet, but the auction hasn't started. I wonder how much it'll cost the winner.

I mean it was interesting I could see it has a great story overall but maybe would be better if sold on something like an NFT, Curious to see how the bidding is going to start since this is just a piece of paper, probably as long as they market it well it might get a high value when the auction starts because if there are only a few people know about the auction so there are low chance that people are going to buy it, it is just a piece of paper so maybe there was no some kind of guaranteed value here unlike NFTs where you could easily resell your NFTs on the market, this one is a tangible item and could easily be fake, its 7 years its difficult to believe that that paper was still on good condition like on the photos, it could easily be fake that could result to no value at all since you could just create something similar to it. Let's see how it is going to end up, I could easily see people here in the forum getting interested for collectors, small bids are surely going to happened.

I mean maybe but thinking of it there weren't really a lot of tangible things that could be linked to the history of Bitcoin or cryptocurrency since it's digital technology most of them are just nontangible things like NFTs. Maybe something like that first Bitcoin every mine right that could totally be a huge thing or could sell at a higher market price if we could identify that thing but it just wasn't made that way.

I don't seem to understand why someone would auction a piece of paper image of Bitcoin and nothing else. Could this be a joke or one of those pranksters?

Well, whatever be the case, an NFT would have been more precise seeing that, if the auction actually did take place as said , it would have been a gathering in real life, but it isn't , but a meme. So why not NFT actually?

It's because it could be part of Bitcoin's history. So not sure if you really witnessed this guy or you are not but here is the video for you, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7GdLQIChNA

And so this guy somewhat became (in)famous to us, to Bitcoin enthusiast and now going to auction that piece of paper.

@kryptqnick - it might be a good idea, but obviously this guy needs his BTC for that piece of memorabilia.  Smiley

Unfortunately, Bitcoin is not a globally approved monetary asset just like every country have their own money design the way they want it. If Bitcoin is not ban in your country, it is banned in some countries and that's the reason why there can not be any Bitcoin museum now, maybe until Bitcoin becomes globally acceptedaccepted. Another way there can be a Bitcoin museum is if an NGO in country that Bitcoin is freely accepted will take it upon themselves to build it.

In London, at the British Museum, there is an exhibition about money and they mention Bitcoin: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5408766.0

Also, in Venezuela there is a Bitcoin Mining Museum: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5405204

There is another Bitcoin Mining museum as well, here are more details: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5410748.0

How did the man keep that paper since 2017 and did not throw it away shortly after that?
Yeah? If the man can give details on how he preserve such easy to tear paper, or maybe he really think this way before that such things will have the interest of others in the few years. So putting it on a  dust-proof frame will probably preserve the paper.

Edit: i thoroughly checked it but both paper were totally different. So i wonder how it will sells to collectors.

To be honest.  Considering it is NOT the original sign, I would not bid more than MAYBE a few hundred Dollars if I really had nothing to do with that amount of money.

But it is not the original.  Even if it was, it would of had much less value considering it is not even part of the note book any more.  If the guy wants some real money.  Then put that note book up for auction, if it even exists any more.

Otherwise it is like purchasing the copy of a painting at an auction.  Why spend a lot of money on a copy.  I do not see the potential or collectible value to be honest with you.  At that point I could work an upscale of the original art, stick it into a cool frame and put it on a wall.  My opinion however.

Smiley

Gonna need to agree with you at least on this one, well Bitcoin was not really a thing back then so small things like this are very significant, and the great story of it would probably going to make it collectible to some of the cryptocurrency collectors, I mean I didn't know much about it and I don't really think that it has huge impact overall to the Bitcoin but as long as someone is willing to pay for it, It would really matter there will be value on it and it is just going to depend on how much they are willing to pay for it.

I mean it is just similar to NFTs we see NFTs' market price skyrocket to even million of dollars, we just don't know if it gets the right marketing and exposure in the crypto space maybe it is going to have a huge market price as well just like NFTs, I still think that NFTs are a little different for sure compared to tangible assets like this, and personally I would think that it is going to reach a price like a trending NFT did because NFTs have its own market so if you want to dispose of it, you could always set a price on it, compared to tangible assets like this it would take a long time if you want to get rid of it just to sell it, like finding the right people something like that etc.

I don't know how they did it, but it doesn't seem to be the original anymore. It looks exactly like the original but, as pointed out, the original was already detached from the pad and was a bit crumpled. The one auctioned is still in the pad. Even the entire pad surprisingly looks new.

Anyway, this was indeed a piece of history. It deserves to be kept properly and safely. It somehow brings back the time when Bitcoin still struggled for recognition and acceptance. Today, just around 7 years later, the tide has already changed significantly, with the world's largest financial institutions already offering Bitcoin products.

I wonder how much someone gonna spend to buy this remarkable collectible, I would bet someone might bid for 1 BTC because 1 BTC = 1 BTC.

I don't seem to understand why someone would auction a piece of paper image of Bitcoin and nothing else. Could this be a joke or one of those pranksters?
Simple, it means the target market is not for you.

Anyway we shouldn't forget there was a duck taped banana that worth for $120,000, so it's not a joke.

Because the real version is in real life stuff, while NFT is a fake and scam stuffs. Wink

I would guess that the best thing to do in this case would be ignoring these type of auctions because it is really not a good idea to keep promoting these things. If you pay a lot for this, then everyone will try to do it, and everyone will try to make money from it.

These type of things are the reason why things get out of hand. If this doesn't get paid a lot, then we are going to end up seeing nobody else do it, it wouldn't be worth it, but if someone pays a ton of money for this then we are going to start seeing a lot of people do the same thing and repeat it constantly as well. I think it would make more sense and that is why I believe that the best thing to do right now would be not even promote the news anywhere else and ignore it completely.

Wow. I actually remember the day that this happened. And if I recall correctly, if you followed his advice and bought bitcoin on that day, I think it was the last time bitcoin was at that price.

He became an icon after this event. He might of lost his position because of this stunt, according to a few press interviews he did shortly after. I find it crazy that he held on to that piece of paper for so long. I assumed it would of faded in color by now. Those types of notebooks dont hold up very well for long periods of time .

But I agree with the above poster, it was in the notebook and then he tore it out, and now its in the notebook again? Doesn't make sense.
