Op, I think you are referring to Ponzi investment cause it mostly happen there I can remember when money making machine that is MMM came out people where rushing to invest in it without asking themselves questions cause  it was paying them thereby sending a conviction to them and outside people ( those that are yet to invest) that it is a legit project till an extent the team acquired what they need and then ran with most peoples money. Exactly my thought. In order to avoid being scam and get into losses, newbies are advised to stick into bitcoin more than altcoins.
