Recently, I came over a Bitcoin advertisement from Bitcointalk (theymos has enabled some advertisements for Bitcoin itself) but it seems some statements are a bit outdated.

For example, one advertisement says Bitcoin is still beta software and it looks like more like a statement from a Bitcoin critic:

Personally, I would not expect such a statement in a Bitcoin forum because after 15 years, Bitcoin is very proven and not really beta software anymore.

Maybe it's time to remove some advertisement slogans once getting outdated?

Well, Bitcoin is still very new compared to gold, for example, so I can imagine, we should not remove such a warning.
Putting all of our money or even taking a loan to buy Bitcoin is not recommended at all.
When it comes to investing, people need to be very careful and advice is always helpful.

Those are not forum ads but factoids. Forum ads have been suspended since 2022 by theymos.

I don't think the factoid list has been updated for many years now, I agree the beta software but should be removed, the other part of the message will always be necessary.

Recently, I came over a Bitcoin advertisement from Bitcointalk (theymos has enabled some advertisements for Bitcoin itself) but it seems some statements are a bit outdated.
It is called "factoids" not advertisement slots.

It's true that bitcoin is still in beta and still in development phase, regardless the years had pass since it was released.

Check bitcoin.org faq
Quote from: FAQ - Bitcoin
Ongoing development - Bitcoin software is still in beta with many incomplete features in active development. New tools, features, and services are being developed to make Bitcoin more secure and accessible to the masses. Some of these are still not ready for everyone. Most Bitcoin businesses are new and still offer no insurance. In general, Bitcoin is still in the process of maturing.

Quote from: Wiki
Beta, named after the second letter of the Greek alphabet, is the software development phase following alpha.

I agree with this, it should be removed. Bitcoin is not a beta software anymore. This is not 2009, 2010 or earlier when bitcoin was created.

It's true that bitcoin is still in beta and still in development phase, regardless the years had pass since it was released.
No.

If I'm not wrong this has been pointed out quite few times. 1

This ad is coming from Factoid slots.

https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

It's true that bitcoin is no more a beta software (Bitcoin Core), has matured significantly beyond a beta phase, and while caution is always advisable when investing in bitcoin, describing it as "beta software" is outdated.

Theymos can update it but I think in that case few other factoids need to be fixed as well.

No.
Bitcoin Core disagrees with you:
Code:
This is experimental software

The warning not to put all your money into BTC is also still correct. Just like it applies to any other investment: diversification reduces the risk of huge losses.

Do not mind my little knowledge about this, but I think people can run full node even without Bitcoin Core? There are other full node wallets. Is that warning not pertaining to Bitcoin Core but to bitcoin generally? All other nodes and miners still kind of depending on Bitcoin Core to run full node?

With how bitcoin is today, it is better than the software the banks are using in term of security of your coins. I think bitcoin developers just leave it for investment advice.

The protocol is open source, so someone could make their own node. But I'm pretty sure Bitcoin Core is the standard.

Quote

Define "Bitcoin" Wink My interpretation is that "Bitcoin" is whatever Bitcoin Core says it is. Until the community agrees on a change.

I'd argue the entire "euro" project should be called experimental Tongue

Bitcoin is not an investment, it's a currency.
None is going to call USD or EURO is an investment.

Bitcoin is not an investment, it's a currency.
None is going to call USD or EURO is an investment.
The paper note of local currencies are called currency. Currency is the representation of money. Currency has no value but its representation has the value. Just like the paper has no value but the amount it represents is the values. Bitcoin is a currency because it has digital representation and that is why it is called a digital currency. Bitcoin is a currency.  But bitcoin is not just a currency but also an asset. Bitcoin is a commodity. Bitcoin is subject to volatile. The price of bitcoin increase over time and may later decrease. Bitcoin has been a hedge against inflation in long term. Some people and organizations like Microstrategy and retail investors are holding it and expect more adoption and more people to buy it for its amrketcap and its price to continue to increase just like gold. Because of this bitcoin is also an investment.

Just like upgrade00 mentioned, they are not advertisement rather they are factoids. They carry some sort of random "Did you know" kind of information. They are quite informative and back in my newbie days I used to read through them any time I come across new ones. I even sometimes do some research for those I'm not aware of.
Anyways Op I agree with you the forum factoids have become so old that a majority of them right now can even be regarded as invalid. Especially this particular one you spotted ,just like others mentioned Bitcoin is not a beta software anymore. I think theymos should update the forum factoids as they are quite helpful in passing information about the forum and Bitcoin especially to newbies.

info 1: Bitcoin is still in a beta phase
info 2 Do not invest what you are unable to lose.
Both information seems outdated but yet they are still valid. No matter how long bitcoin has stayed or survived, if it's still in beta version, we should acknowledge that and not say things off record. Unless there's a consensus to do otherwise, it is what it is and may remain like that as along as bitcoin exists.
Information 2 is valid for all kinds of investment, especially for volatile kinds of investments.

This topic was discussed last August https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5462123.0

Both information seems outdated but yet they are still valid.
The developers themselves modified the text in 2014 and we talk about Bitcoin Core
Bitcoin Core still (intentionally) contains a line that says "this software is experimental". The line saying that Bitcoin Core is beta software was removed in 2014.

Bitcoin is volatile, the price moves against what? 1 sat = 1 sat. If the market decides a watch will cost 0.007 BTC then the price of the watch is 0.007 BTC. The problem starts to raise when you are trying to convert it to a fiat value. These days the concept we have for bitcoin has changed from the original concept, I think it's because of the industrialization of mining.

The warning not to put all your money into BTC is also still correct. Just like it applies to any other investment: diversification reduces the risk of huge losses.
Bitcoin is not an investment, it's a currency.
None is going to call USD or EURO is an investment.
So you want to call it "savings" if you keep Bitcoin? Fiat money isn't an investment because it continuously loses value. Bitcoin, although designed to be peer-to-peer electronic cash, is mostly used as an investment nowadays.
I wouldn't recommend to keep all your money in fiat either.

Bitcoin is volatile, the price moves against what? 1 sat = 1 sat.
I used to say "1 BTC = 1 BTC", until I realized that's like saying "1 USD = 1 USD", and it's not true. That's why USD-prices are usually related to a year: a dollar in 1960 was worth a lot more than a dollar now. And a Bitcoin in 2010 was worth a lot less than a Bitcoin now.

Do not mind my little knowledge about this, but I think people can run full node even without Bitcoin Core? There are other full node wallets.

It's true there are other full node software beside Bitcoin Core, but Bitcoin Core remain most popular one. It's also worth to mention Bitcoin Core still offer best performance, https://blog.lopp.net/2023-bitcoin-node-performance-tests/.

Is that warning not pertaining to Bitcoin Core but to bitcoin generally?

IMO the warning only applies to Bitcoin Core software.

All other nodes and miners still kind of depending on Bitcoin Core to run full node?

No, you can choose to other full node software or even write new one for your needs. But i expect most or all alternative use Bitcoin Core as reference.

The bold part was my point but yes these days bitcoin became an investment, the reason I think was posted in my last response. The industrialization of mining, add holding nature of the users with it. Real estate, gold and silver are still safe and secure if anyone consider investment.

True, it make sense. The comparison seems to be the value needs to be determined by value received from the current economy compared to the value received in a given period of time in the past.

OP, I understand your plight but let us not be blinded by the love for Bitcoin. The advert may not go down well with you, but it's still cautious advice that is not peculiar to Bitcoin investment alone but all other investments as well, and above all, it doesn't hurt in a way. We all have to be careful with all investments no matter what we believe in them or hope for about them. Come to think of it, if you are sincere enough, more time is still needed with Bitcoin, it's still very young and still withstanding the test of time, which is why we still need to give it time and continue to study it.

Also, the 15 years you called is way too little for an asset to be entirely trusted whether you like it or not, what about those assets that have spent centuries and millenniums, can you compare them in a time-tested trusted level if you are sincere? Bitcoin is popular, well-appreciated and celebrated because it was introduced in this digital age, we should now be patient with it.

It has not even celebrated the silver jubilee yet, not to mention the golden jubilee and 100 years. And don't be surprised that the person who wrote that remark may be a Bitcoin lover and holder as well, but may also be a true investor who does not want the love of it to cloud his sincere judgement. This is the wisest approach in the investment environment if I'm asked.

The only reason I told people that 1 BTC = 1 BTC is that bitcoin price do increase in price, and also that newbies believe that having bitcoin is like they are trading. I will differentiate between trading and holding bitcoin where there is no liquidation of asset. That 1 BTC is 1 BTC but the price will determine if they will gain it lose but no asset liquidation.

OP, I understand your plight but let us not be blinded by the love for Bitcoin. The advert may not go down well with you, but it's still cautious advice that is not peculiar to Bitcoin investment alone but all other investments as well, and above all, it doesn't hurt in a way.
This is not directly about investment, it more like bitcoin can collapse. It applies to investing it, trading it, using it for P2P transactions. It is about what ever you are using bitcoin for. That bitcoin is still experimental and should be used for the amount of money that you can afford to lose. Bitcoin security is far better than bank security. If something like this can be said to bitcoin, that means everything in life that men invested are still experimental because bitcoin has the highest security.
