Today suddenly after my id logout, while logging in I see that there is a blank field named OTP where I have to give my OTP, but I don't know what my OTP is. Then without understanding anything I login with username and password without OTP and my ID is logged in.

But my question is what was that OTP for? And where can I get this OTP? What does it do?

Extra security. You can go to your profile and add it up if you want, or you can just leave it blank.

That's a 2FA new feature just added last December you can ignore it if you didn't set or enable 2FA from your account.

If you want to set 2fa enable then you can find it under your profile>account related settings you should be able to see the code or QR code that you can add in your authenticator app.

OTP is just "One time password", it's like using an authenticator app from Microsoft, or if you use a Google Pixel kind of like that if you are signing in on google from a different device.

OTP means One-time Password. It's added to forum for the more potential security for not getting hacked on your account.
If you don't on this option in your account then turn on it asap. And As I see you don't know anything about OTP so you also don't know how to on it , here is a topic for you-

To add to what @Bitmaz said, it was added last year December because of accounts hack, and last year a forum member said someone login to his forum account and use his account to take a loan without his knowledge.

A thread was created to seek from forum members opinion on 2FA security which most posters accepted. I believe that there will be less hacks on accounts with active 2FA.

The 2FA is an additional layer of protection but if you are careful enough with your username and password and not tricked to enter it into another Bitcointalk-like website which will reveal your password to the hackers, that should be enough with the staked bitcoin address. Since the 2FA was implemented on this forum, I have not gone for it. I use a strong password. It is truly an additional layer of protection though.

I do not agree with this because it has been long since people have been asking for 2FA on this forum but members will say strong password, not entering your password and username into Bitcointalk-like website, and email account protection, with signing of bitcoin message is enough until PowerGlove proposed 2FA and theymos allowed it. If PowerGlove did not proposed 2FA login, it is possible that we may still not have 2FA enabled for login on this forum.

Building on what everyone has said above, it's not compulsory to fill in the OTP space while logging in to the forum. It's an optional layer of security that was initiated to protect people's accounts as it's a personal one time password that requires only the original owner of the account to fill in hence it reduces the rate of hacks and all sorts of security compromised in the forum.

The link @Crypto Library dropped above will guide you on how to enable it, then you can begin to use that option during your login time if necessary.

How OTP can stand for "Short-Time Password" while the first letter of the acronym doesn't match with the first letter of the first word "short"? Actually it stands for One-Time Password. Because the password is only valid one single time. On bitcointalk the 2FA feature is a TOTP one, it means the code is not sent by SMS or e-mail but only generated through a synchronized app.
It's important to keep in mind that this safety can be disable through e-mail, so it's better to use an emailbox with a 2FA authentication too in order to avoid a weak link in your security set up.

Yeah, it is true that there was a big role of PowerGlove already theymos declared that he did the 90% of it, But it is also true that before this many requests have been made many times to enable the 2FA feature.

I think that's a nice question from op, because I have been mean to ask this question about this otp I know the full meaning of otp is one time password but my question is that how can one generate this one time password? Or does it  mean that they are going to send it through email or sms because I don't really understand that otp because I have not been making use of that otp, I think is optional but if you also want to make use of that otp the choice is yours, but making use of that otp will make your account to be more secured, but my question is how to get this otp?

It is on your device with installed 2-factor authenticator application.

This guide is written with Google Authenticator application for example, but you can use other applications, open source like Aegis.

This OPs thread might seem common but believe it that it is very crucial.
Many Investors have lost their funds this way due to the fact that they do not know the importance of OTP activations so they would just toy with it without having it on a private custody.

I have heard from Investors that scammers got reached to decode the contact such as email or phone which was used to activate their wallets and other sensitive privacy accounts, so on the process of the scammers intending to log in the wallet account,  a private key process to input the OTP would be required so the scammers would call the wallet holder to forward them the code that was sent to them.

Their trickish excuses are usually as follows>>>
* They claims that they mistakenly used the victims contact to process their account and would plead if you can send them the OTP code sent to you.

* They pretends to be officials in charge of your account services so you should send them the OTP that was sent to you to process your wallet account either for upgrading so that you can enjoy some additional features.

* Also trying to attract the investors emotions in pretending that the victim has rewarded with some price and demands for the OTP to process the claim of your reward

Most especially beginners who are not knowledgeable, lack guidance or even being ignorantic are usually to fall such victims.

So OP, OTP means 2-Factors-Aurhorization which is used verify your accounts loggins to authentic the loggin in attempt is coming from a reliable or verified source.
It could also serve as alternative to logging your account if  where password is not provided.
So, be careful with your Wallet and keep your contract used to process your account secured to yourself.
