Not all the time but most which is why they continue doing it out of frustration. They are chasing both recovery from loss and profit. Cycle starts with them betting an amount they really cannot afford losing then be emotionally affected by loss that they will be forcing the win by means of gambling continuously with the desire of getting the money back. Once they get close or win some games, they will be having desires of winning big, but loss will again take place creating a loop. Addiction won't happen or taking place if not for a reason, before it turns into a compulsion and obsession. The more an individual is affected by the result, the more he would continue doing it without thinking of its long term effect.

They lose all the time in the long run. This means that they have their ups and downs, but it eventually, be it in a period of a year or 10 years, lead to a total loss and ruin.
I can tell you a story I know from my town. There's a guy addicted to gambling here and he's a shadow of a man. He gambles almost every day, when he wins he gambles more, when he loses he drinks to forget. He had big wins in his time, wins that whole town talked about. One time he won so much that he bought a car for half the money and gambled the other half away. The car eventually needed service for which he didn't have money. He'd rent it out to people to get some, but instead of fixing it he'd gamble it away...

Well this is another reason but again will fall to the idea that we do things on purpose. That's not the ideology behind the fact that everyone is told to not get into addiction.. firstly, it's not even right for you to get addicted to anything in life - it immediately makes you prone to whatever effects that could cause you at the end.. when you get addicted, it becomes almost impossible to avoid/retract a certain urge, making it more difficult to find good fortune since the process is repeated over and over again.... When that happens, you might wanna have that delusion that you should atleast, recover some loses - that's exactly how you keep losing!
