I don't think it can be controlled but all you need it's decipline and self determination, but it's not easy to get all this while you're already addicted. Just take look at the drugs addict, how do they behave when they don't see their drugs when feeling like taking it. I'm surprised Op asked this question, but it's clear that addiction is not good in any aspect. Even though people make money through gambling it's hard to achieve that via addiction. Most players who are addicted always face multiple challenges which prevents them from winning. Loss of money is highly invoke for such gamblers and they are mainly in pains. Imagine what the man in Op's story did to his son. He actually wouldn't get good responsibility across his head anymore. All he could think of is how to gather money through his gambling habit.
