Is getting addicted to gambling right or wrong?

Personally, I believe gambling should be seen as a game, not a habit or an easy access to wealth, " using son as a bet" is the height of it, People should learn about gambling before they start, the same way we learnt about careers, we should learn the act of gambling.

Even those who are experienced in gambling and those who have turned out to be a shame to the system didn't just wake up and jump into gambling.
 
I believe most of them went through some online tutorship or by just reading and studying the errors of other gamblers, which should set out good habits for them to kick up with, but most of them just set themselves up the way they want, and even if they have a personal teacher, some of them have outgrown them and set their own rules.

It's funny you say this OP, but what is right and what is wrong? Are we going into ethics here? If so then each of us follows their own ethics.

For one person it will be wrong to lie, for someone else it will be normal. I'll give you an example. Would you tell someone he's going to die, knowing there's a chance they'll get cured? If you know someone is in a bad condition, it's sometimes better to lie and give them some hope so they don't give up until the end. It's a good example of how right and wrong can differ depending on situation.

For me being addicted to anything is fundamentally wrong, even if it's an addiction to activities like sports. You should control your life not the other way round.

It's wrong to be addicted to gambling, saying too addicted means you have gone too far. You shouldn't be addicted as it'll make you have a very bad experience when gambling. Gambling addicts don't get anything good from gambling but they'll be losing money always. Gambling addicts don't have good reputation in the society as they are seen as failures as gambling addiction can make you to do inhuman things as the man that use his child from gambling did and lost.

You can become a gambler but not an addicted one, ways you can use to avoid getting addicted included planing your gambling. You don't have to be gambling every time as that will make you become addicted, you can choose when you'll gamble and only use small money to gamble and not large amounts. Gambling is a very addictive activity and it needs you to be extremely cautious when you're doing it or you'll have very bad experience.

Much better if he won't get to that point of being addicted. No one wishes to get addicted but many don't realize that they're already one due to their behavior towards gambling. As they keep on doing it casually, their gambling activities and sessions would tell them on how addicted they are. Someone can gamble freely and as many times as he can be but won't end up being addicted, there's always the difference for those responsible gamblers and the irresponsible ones.

Not to mention most ethics deal with good or bad values instead of right or wrong afaik. I do agree the result of your ethical calculations depends on what ideology you consider correct (utilitarianism, etc). That being said, I'm not sure there is an ethical school that considers addiction a good thing. Even if you consider happiness in the present to be what people should seek, I believe the application would contradict a lot of things. Maybe opening a new thread would be a good idea for ethical debates.

OP, I believe you should not judge everything just from the result. By that logic robbing people can make people rich too, so why not do it? I read too many news that reported people who killed themselves because of addiction that led them to loans, etc. They certainly weren't happy about their conditions. CMIIW.

I would like to point us all to the correct understanding of how gambling actually works and also add to what you have said above about how winning and losing works such as winning tends to always depend on luck and losing is the opposite in the sense that when luck does not come then you will lose. On the other hand about strategy yes it can be useful especially when you are involved in a type of sports betting where skills can be useful to increase the odds but it does not work on random types of bets like slots for one. There is nothing else that causes gambling addiction other than treating it in the wrong way such as having excessive expectations and responses when achieving one of the wins which can increase self-confidence along with increasing greater expectations. On the other hand, of course addiction is a very bad situation that can cause various bad effects and significant downturns to a gambler, all gamblers certainly do not want to experience downturns in their lives, but strangely often they repeat the same mistakes for their actions.

Yes maybe your suggestion can be used as a way for them to really believe about how addiction in gambling is actually by making yourself a victim of addiction, but however there is no such thing as a temporary addiction, because after all addiction is not something that is worth experimenting with, none other than because it is very dangerous because of the very significant adverse effects. And I think you're forgetting one thing here which is that addiction is a very difficult disease to cure, I think you're familiar with that idea which most people always say.

Gambling addicts are loser therefore there's no benefits in getting addicted to gambling as I have earlier said. No individual can know how gambling works as if they know then they'll always be making money and won't stop gambling. If this continue then the casino will run out of business as they don't have money to keep paying the gambler that is winning. Some casino has made it a rule to ban any individual that keeps winning to not be eligible to play in the casino anymore.

Casino don't want to lose therefore they'll always set the odds to be in their favour to get more money from any individual that wants to gamble using their casino. This does not happen to a drunkard or a drug addict. They just want to get a certain substance - drugs or alcohol, but in general they also value money and have their own way of looking at things.

Why would you even say that the Op should experience it himself? Although I understand the reason for your sarcastic tone but it's really not okay to wish upon someone something that's literally crazy and could mess you all up in just a matter of seconds. I don't think anything is wrong with us getting addicted to gambling but what's important is for us to fix ourselves and make sure we do the right thing that is not going to make us to finally get the kind of addiction we might not be able to control. It is important for us to understand ourselves so we don't have to keep begging for funds when we are supposed to be making money from our various bets. There is money in gambling and that is what many of us gamblers wants to be seeing in every of our bets. People want to make money and they don't want to lose which is nit possible because loses will surely comes.

I'm ready to my gambling to next level, this is the exact thought that flows in the mind of gamblers and they're left with nothing than huge losses which are uncountable. I gambled often but I pray never to get addicted because it's a whole lot and there's absolutely everything to worry about. Addiction is bad and might even cause big negative effect for such victim. We know how much people have fought with gambling addiction but it doesn't always appear to be open for easy solving.
