Nigeria is a great nation with high morals in the society, when it comes to moral values Nigeria is one of the best nations, However that great morals which we were known for all over the world has been defeated and below are some remote causes.

Decline in Parental Authority and Domestic Values

The  family  is  universally  acknowledged  as  the  fundamental  and  indispensable  cell  of  all  human  societies.  The  family  may  be regarded as the cradle of civil society, and it is in great measure within the circle of family life that the destiny of the state is fostered. The  larger  society,  the  nation, derives  its  moral  tone fundamentally from  that  of the  family.  Hence,  the strategic  importance  of domestic life in the moral life of the nation cannot be over looked. However, in recent times, the family and its traditional influence and values are under serious stress in Nigeria. According  to  Iwe  (1987),  the  paterfamilias,  the  head  of  the family,  is  steadily  losing  ground  and  influence.  His  headship  or authority is  no  longer  unquestionable.  The  loyalty  of  his wife and  the  piety  of  his children  are not  easily taken  for  granted  and assured nowadays. In  many homes, many fathers  have ceased to lead  by exemplary lives.  Some  have become over-indulging and permissive  towards  their  children,  to  whom  they have  unwittingly  issued  tickets  of  indiscipline  and licentiousness.  Others  have passively  succumbed  to  the  unedifying  prodding  and  claims  of  their  spouses.  Today  the  weak,  irresponsible  and  indiscipline paterfamilias  have  become  a domestic  liability  of serious social  concern.  The materfamilias or  house  wives are traditionally  and normally the corner-stone of domestic stability, the symbol of domestic  loyalty, and patient serenity, the inspirer of domestic thrift and economy, industry and  peace.  Today in our midst, the  opposite  is  fast becoming the case. These have created  serious  moral lapse in most families, thereby creating a state of moral decay in the society.

 Poverty

There is a high rate of poverty in the society owing to lack of social justice, as a result, people tend to indulge in immoral activities, just to make the ends meet. Tutu (1999) asserted that people become poor due to oppression and injustice brought about by unjust social  structures.  Stott (1984)  postulated  that the  poor  are deprived  of  the opportunity  of  having access  to food,  clothing  and shelter. He maintained that the poor constitute a group of powerless people who are socially and politically oppressed. O’ Donovan (2000) said that poverty is responsible for the  high rate of crime in the urban cities. Poverty is one of the major causes of stealing, prostitution, drug addiction, armed robbery, militancy, kidnapping and crisis in the society. As a result of poverty, some young girls have taken to prostitution as a  means of livelihood. The after-effects of prostitution have resulted to some  young girls  contracting AIDS  and  other  venereal  diseases  while others have  met  their  premature  deaths  owing  to abortion. This  accounts  for  the  rapid spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases in the society.

Loss  of  integrity  among international community

This  is  one of  the major effects  of  moral  degeneration in  Nigeria.  The involvement  of  Nigerian  leaders  in corruption and other  immoral  acts has  dented the image  of  the  country in the  international community. Ituma, (2008) painted the picture thus: The image of  the country in the  international arena has become so  battered that every  Nigerian  should psychologically feel a scorching hurt inflicted on  his  individual  psyche.  The dent has gone so far  that  everywhere  in the world Nigerians are  said  to  be generally dreaded like mad dogs and criminals, cautiously approached like dangerous snakes, and avoided like lepers.

I have an issue with the fact that you're narrowing this your analogy to the Nigerian context as though it is just a Nigerian thing. The decline in our moral value is a global issue that has affected all the parts of the world and In most part of the world, when you're being strict with your children in terms of teaching them the right moral values, you could get penalize and in some cases arrested for being aggressive on your children.
Decline in Parental Authority and Domestic Values
when you're living in a society where parents don't even have the right moral upbringing, what do you expect of them? You find some of them trying to force there kids into doing what they couldn't do while they where still young and the truth is that as a parent, if you're not living the kind of life you advocate that your children should live, it means you have a huge problem and no child would magically have a good moral behavior that he can't learn directly from his parents action.
Poverty

There is a high rate of poverty in the society owing to lack of social justice, as a result, people tend to indulge in immoral activities, just to make the ends meet. Tutu (1999) asserted that people become poor due to oppression and injustice brought about by unjust social  structures.  Stott (1984)  postulated  that the  poor  are deprived  of  the opportunity  of  having access  to food,  clothing  and shelter. .
poverty can change ones mentality and general perception of things and it's very true that being poor can cause one to neglect his right moral upbringing and do things he normally wouldn't be seen doing if he was financially stable. When one is poor, he can do anything just to survive and if you've spoken to someone that's on the street who is just looking for any means to survive, most of them will tell you that if they had the choice, they wouldn't even think to indulge in those act and that they weren't like this while growing up.

Loss  of  integrity  among international community

This  is  one of  the major effects  of  moral  degeneration in  Nigeria.  The involvement  of  Nigerian  leaders  in corruption and other  immoral  acts has  dented the image  of  the  country in the  international community..
an average Nigerian don't even bother about the effect of her countries reputation in the global stage. They just want to survive and that's just it. Our leaders are bad just like most other leaders but that's not an excuse to go into doing things you shouldn't be found doing. Everyone has his/her life to live and using the excuse of bad leadership or poor parental upbringing to justify your bad action isn't the best thing you can do for yourself.

I no blame you say you choose to narrow this topic down to the naija area seeing as nah the board you dey. Well, nah beta topic you bring up and make I put my mouth.
Remember say bible talk say as time they go, the love of many shall wax cold, men go be lovers of themselves more than lovers of God and children go dey disobedient and the rest. As time dey go, things wey bin dey morally unacceptable go become the norm and you sef dey see how the country dey go, how things don cost to the point say poor man no fit even see am well chop
People don decide say since things no go beta, them sef go carry their hands out for bad thing. I hear of case where mama help her son poison her daughter so dem fit use do moni medicine. Guy forget about morality the world dey on a steady decline, the word morality no follow again.

that's religion point of view, to be I think parental guidance play a vital role on our moral values and respect. Because we can't blame the society of the state, every things that resulted in the society or state all started from the home, so parents should be held responsible if anything goes wrong in the society. In Nigeria today, Internet fraudsters are now role models because our parents never question their source of income, you see students buying cars ,and their parents never ask how come, instead they supported them. It's quite unfortunate situation in Nigeria,  young girls are now into hookup and parents are comfortable with, for the fact that the girls are bring them money.

The value system in Nigeria is dead, if we must revise it, which is very hard, we must start house to house campaign to tell the parents the danger of corruption for the society.

Every point that was made by OP is true and I don't think he minced his words either. But I will like to add to it that one of the major causes of our moral degradation is cornered around poverty and lack of parental guidance and support. The irony here is, there are many homes where the parents are putting in their efforts and struggle to train their children but the kind of community they live will always retrain the children in a negative way thereby affecting the character of the children.

Secondly, there are homes where children get trained wrongly due to lack of proper parental guidance and moral support being rendered to the children because the parents could not keep their eye on them because of their supposed busy schedules. In the end, the children are not able to gain the character they desired as a result of the carelessness from the parents.
