Spanish Suited Playing cards. ?

Since I joined this section of the forum I have read a lot about people talking about poker and other casino games. But I think I am yet to read from someone here talking about Spanish Suited cards, like the these in the images I am attaching.

Have you ever heard or played with this cards or they are rather uncommon in your country?
Here in Venezuela they are very popular, I would even dare to say they are the most popular kind of suit one could find people playing with.

The most popular game here is Truco, which is game commonly played with friend and family while taking some shots of alcohol.
Brink and mortar casinos established here in my country are usually within touristic destinations, so they Carter their gamblers with more international card games instead using the Spanish stylized suit.

I remember these from my childhood. This is precisely how I got introduced to gambling. My dad had an old deck of Spanish cards and his friends would come over, have some beers and wager some money by playing card games. I never learned the rules for the games they played, but me and my brother would have some fun playing with the cards with some rules we made up ourselves.

Same here, I don't think I have seen the Spanish card and I never knew that such exist. During my childhood days, we do play poker and whit, but mostly is whot card because it is the most popular game and it is played by everyone for fun, but gamblers love staking with it.

Wow....sound crazy. Why didn't you guys learn the rules, is it that it was only adults that plays the Spanish card because you could have learnt the rules from your friend or someone of your age mate. It will be fun learning how to play this card.

I think it will be helpful if you will provide the brief gameplay of the game or something similar so that user can easily understand it without the need to go outside the reference link.

I don't think we have this kind of card in my country. There is one card game that is very popular in my country, which you will find almost everyone playing during chitchat. I tried to do some searching to see if I could get a picture of the card, but I am not seeing any results. It has a very simple design of a rectangle, triangle, circle, square, cub, and numbers in it. That card game and well know dice game is the most common game played just for fun among friends or siblings here.

That is weird to me, because I would have assumed all countries which were one colonized by Spain (as the colonial superpower once was) had know or adopted this style of cards for them to play their local games, at least, that seems to be the case for the countries in the Caribbean, like Venezuela, Colombia even México...

You happen to be from the Philippines, by chance? Because that is the only country which has been colonized by Spain and is far away enough from Latin America from them not to be as influenced as we are when comes to cultural things like Spanish Suited Cards.  The other option would be Equatorial Samoa (I think that is how it is called), but I doubt there is any person in this forum from such a tiny country located in the middle of West Africa.

Oh yes, we are aware of this kind of games here in the Philippines and it is called Sakla

A standard Spanish pack of 48 cards is used for sakla, consisting of four suits, with three pictures- the king (rey), horse (caballo) and the jack (sota)-and numeral cards 1 to 9 in each of the four suits-swords (espadas), clubs (bastos), cups (copas) and coins (oros). The jacks, horses, and kings have numerals 10, 11 and 12 respectively in the corners, and the respectively in the corners, and the suits are usually distinguished by the number of breaks in the borders at the narrow ends of the cards: swords with three, clubs with two, cups with one, and coins with none.

Usually we played this game during wake, and it somewhat become a common funeral practice to raise some funds specially if the family of the deceased doesn't have enough money for the burial and other expense.

So we can see the influence of Spain as we all know that the Philippines has been under Spanish rule for more than 300 years.

This is my first time of seeing a game as this and I guess it's most likely country specific and hasn't really gone global all that much.

How does the taking of shit works?
Is it more like playing and then when a player looses he gets to drink up from the cup and then the game continues like that till everyone gets to drink to stupor?
Such kind of games doesn't always end well in my region cause most persons get  aggressive when they are drunk and it could lead to some sort of fight or wrong use of words when they are all drunk. What's close to this in my region is the white and I doubt it's just peculiar to my region cause there are some whote app that are on playstor which means that it's not a local game.

Being a Nigerian, I guess I need not mention that this cards looks completely unfamiliar to me to be honest, but then, I am not at all surprised, because I've always known that games, most especially the local ones, are not limited to those that we play over here in my country, I've always believed that different countries have their different types of games and different styles at which we all play.

And I guess this is why traveling out is always very important, most especially for scholars, traveling out helps us to learn, try and have experiences on lots of new things, stuffs that we may never come across in our own countries to we pass on.

The Philippines was colonized by Spain by 333 years and as Baofeng has mentioned, we have a local game(at least I think it is a local game) called Sakla(that uses the card you mentioned) which is usually played during a wake to raise funds for the family of the deceased. other than Sakla I don't know if there is another game in my country where this card is being used.

And based from the response, yes, the influence on the Spanish colonial empire in the 15th-18th century and they might have bring this to the countries that they conquered during those times.

Now, it has evolved from it's original form and still though they are being played mostly on Spanish speaking countries and one in Asia.

I actually haven't heard much about them here in the Philippines either. Most card games I see people playing use the French-suited decks, like poker or tongits. It sounds like the colonization history might explain the difference between our countries. Venezuela was more closely tied to Spain geographically and culturally, so maybe that's why the Spanish-suited cards stuck around there.

It would be cool to learn more about Truco sometime! Does it involve any bluffing or strategy like poker, or is it more about having fun with friends?

I don't think Spanish Suited cards have anything to do with the tarot, though I can see why one could associate both kind of cards because of the illustrations on them. The company in Spain which is the major distributor of those also make some actual tarot cards.
Though a brief search on the Internet, I found some information on how alledgedly to be able to play the tarot with Spanish Suited cards, though, I doubt anyone actually into dark things like tarot and Guija would settle for less than the original set of card and use the Spanish Suited as a replacement.

On the evolution of the Suite, I have also noticed there are many variants: French Suit, Portuguese Suit and even Mexican Suited cards, all of the based in the original Spanish design, so I don't have much doubt on countries in Asia also having their own versions or regional suits.

I had friends that were from different ethnic backgrounds. If I had shown these cards to an Asian or a white kid, it would have been a completely foreign concept. The internet was also in its infancy when I was at that age so it is not like I could just look up the rules on Google.
