The case may or may not be true. As mentioned, it may be the defense of her team so as to receive lenient  sentence. Though it can really happen to a gambling addict as most of them are desperate to find a way how to supply their gambling addiction.

Also, if the bank did not discover the act, I highly believe she won't repay the bank in full. Because from the story, TSB refunded all the victims in full first. And because of the discovery as she was not in the bank's employment anymore, she repaid the bank, attended restorative justice with bank rep, engaged in counselling and said to be remorseful. This story goes to show that the traditional banking system can also be compromised, especially if there are employees who will resort to violating their code of conduct.

True, the perpetrator might tries to position herself as a victim due to her gambling addiction with the aim of getting leniency.
But it requires strong evidence, her lawyer must be able to provide evidence such as CCTV from land based casino or other proof that show the flow of money was actually used for gambling,
The internal supervision of the bank was also not good because this case was only discovered after there was a report from the victims and after the perpetrator has stopped working in that bank

The story is not surprising to me because if people can steal from people that they know just so that they can gamble, it is very possible for them to steal from people that they do not know and they see as vulnerable just so that they can keep gambling. For the bank person, it is likely that it is not the first time they had doing something like this, but has been getting away with it, because that is what must have increased the confidence to keep doing so. it is bad to borrow money to gamble and it is even worse to steal money just so you can gamble.

I would agree on you. Gambling addiction was only made as an escape, but most probably this teller has already been stealing way back before but it's only at the moment that she was caught. Although some would also resort into having mental disorders just to fuel their gambling addiction, but I just feel this case is different. The teller has no other motives but to steal the money, but not actually intended for gambling purposes.

This only proves that there is no 100% security of our funds in centralized banks. If it's not made with some system errors, those humans inside the bank premises are actually to be blamed.

Move freely in the sense of being healthy and not being imprisoned. because, even though they no longer have a penny, as long as they still have the ability to walk and breathe and can still use their brains and hands to gamble, they definitely have a thousand ways to get money, no matter what.

There are many criminal cases committed due to addicted gambling. Not only direct crime, but fraud, online loans, extortion of family or other people, and various other bad things in order to get money for gambling, these are the dangers if you are addicted.

There are no limits for gambling addicts (or any other addiction that requires spending a lot of money, such as drugs or alcohol) in what they can do to get the most money in the quickest way possible to meet their addictive needs, even if the risk costs them the loss of what is most precious to them. This may be a simple case because the bank will pay the amounts to those affected and will later deduct it from the employee’s salaries, but we have seen in other cases how some addicts dare to steal their relatives’ money, deprive their families of the necessities of life, or borrow with guarantees that they do not have the right to dispose of.

The bank also bears part of the responsibility since it did not choose its employees well by not verifying the psychological qualifications of employees in sensitive tasks (treasury,custmers assets) and did not adopt procedures to monitor the daily activities of employees on its systems. This woman would not have transferred these amounts except because she knew that there was no supervision over her, and the evidence for this is that one of the victim customers was the one who discovered the theft.

Oh no! That’s really terrible, really!
Like, how do people manage these debit to credit systems and hope that, they wouldn’t come by some trouble. Even in the event of a win, you’ll still get query to have debit the money in the first place. The customer is sure getting an alert and it goes into history which is questionable. I guess the teller wouldn’t care, after all, they won and have got the money replaced.

This is clearly a don’t. Having to gamble more than you can afford to lose and clearly with money that isn’t yours. Worst of all, she lost this money! I’m guessing it ain’t her first time, having to do this with not just one party but, several other elderly persons, she must have got away with a few, such nerve!

That's how traditional banking with centralized system can take advantage of their users' money. I don't know if the company will take the liabilities and refund the stolen money but this is highly unlikely to happen and that's how shitty to trust banking system.
