TSB Bank teller stole $28,000 from customers to feed her gambling addiction

How far do people go to feed a gambling addiction?

In this story we have a young bank teller, 28 years old lady, who stole 28,000$ from four different elders who were suffering from health and cognitive problems. Her goal was to fuel a gambling addiction, as presented by the defense at the court.

Families must be attentive to their elders when going to the bank and dealing with money in general. Scammers and thieves are everywhere and always ready to take advantage of the vulnerability of such individuals at an advanced age.

This kind of act is not common and merely seems I possible because it was a lady being involved in this kind of act and not a man, well we cannot predict what can comes out of anyone at anything time as people remain u predictable a times, furthermore, I believe there is high standard for competency in demands for bankers to be employed for their job, I don't know what may have come over this lady to have taken such kind of decision and act, I can only say that she habr gone too far with the whole thing being a woman, it's highly disappointing.

Stealing is already wrong, doing so for a gambling addiction is even more wrong and stealing from a sector of the population that is vulnerable is even worse, however if that was not enough, it is not clear if she was mandated to serve any time on jail which is preposterous, it really bothers me that whenever white-collar crimes are committed jail time is not guaranteed or a very short sentence is given, when we have seen many cases of people committing suicide because of the money lost, and in my opinion those deaths should be directly attributed to those that stole that money and they should be judged accordingly.

All because of gambling addiction or if ever just a little benefit of a doubt most are because of her addiction that's why he commit this she thinks that she got that opportunities to keep her gambling addiction while using other's money, though for sure she knows the risk as she's not innocent with the crime that she did, but due to her gambling addiction it leads her to push and continue her wrong doing, she will serve her punishment after discovering her crime.

It's important to keep an eye with those old folks especially if we do have relatives or someone close to us, with this it's a good eye opener not to completely entrust your savings or your love one's saving to the bank.

Not really that common but something which is really that possible to happen and we've seen these stuffs wayback. Although it is really that really very rare that this one is really having a woman
on which is really that involved into such condition on which we know that this isnt really that something that we can see it on everyday because if ever there would really be some instances
such as this  then it would really be that usually be that involved by a man because we are the ones who could really be that easily be making up some stupid decisions whether from their work
or into other aspects on which it wouldnt really be that usually be seeing that woman would really be doing.

In general, on the moment that you've seen yourself dealing up with gambling and not really that much good when it comes to self control then you would really be definitely
be ending up into this kind of condition or situation.

Once again, gambling appears in the news in a negative way: gambling addiction and theft. Why do we so often see gambling-related events in the news in an unfavorable context? Even gamblers who hit the jackpot receive a dose of undesirable consequences "Won $4 Million and Died…". Isn't gambling capable of giving people something positive?

Families must be attentive to their elders when going to the bank and dealing with money in general.
In my opinion, it is the banks that should more carefully check (monitor the work for absence of abuse of official position) of their employees (young cashiers of 28 years old).

Scammers and thieves are everywhere
And it is probably unacceptable for them to work where they need to work with client’s money.

Before we even talk about her gambling addiction.. 2 months into her job and the employee is already siphoning money out of the customers accounts smh.. You know what clearly this company has poor controls towards the running of the business and a person new to the business isn't suppose to have easy access to the money and I wouldn't be surprised if there is more dormant funds she has used to fund her habits.

As of the addiction, let's just say this employee doesn't respect their job which helps pay her bills, but now that her operation is burst perhaps she will learn the hardway... Btw worst case scenario will be getting blacklisted in her profession which will leave a mark.

After what he will be held accountable for by law, I also agree that this employee will find it increasingly difficult to get the same job in the future. His legal history will clearly make other companies consider not accepting him as an employee, so his life will clearly become more difficult financially. Once he was discovered to be dishonest, everyone no longer trusted him and gave him a job.

See, this is what a lot of people like me mean when we say that when you're addicted to gambling, it is not only your life that you're putting in the line but the lives of other people as well, especially your family. For sure, she's one of if not the only source of income in their family, and with her unemployment and the highly possible incarceration she's looking at, her family's welfare is going to be put on the line. Not to mention the utter shame she would bring to her kids knowing that her mother was a scammer and not even for their sake.

So folks, be more mindful of how you spend your money, be extra careful when you're gambling. You don't wanna end up like this girl who willingly put shit at stake just cause she couldn't control herself and would much rather be put in jail than deal with her gambling addiction.

If you're deep into gambling, you will create plans based on your job just to steal to feed your addiction. She planned everything, and she knew her target, and she was able to do it and almost escape from his evil deeds.

But we all know we are dealing with a bank. We all know that all your actions inside the bank are being monitored so even if she is that good with her plans, the bank will eventually discover, too bad for her, she will go to jail, and even if she gets out, she cannot practice here profession as her license will be revoked.

When a person reaches a high level of gambling addiction, it is not difficult for her to commit any criminal act because she cannot remain normal during that time. I think the woman what she did must have forgotten about her career at least for a while otherwise she couldn't have committed that kind of crime. She may have lost money in gambling which she eventually had to steal to recover, but she had no idea that she would be caught. Now if she faces punishment then she will definitely lose his job because those who commit crimes like theft have no chance to work in the backing sector.

Yeah, that is right because when someone addicted to gambling, he can commit any criminal act to have money so he can continue playing gambling. That is happens to that woman who stole customer's money to playing gambling and that is a criminal because he doing a wrong thing.
Her career will end as soon as the court gives punishment to her and she lost her job and she will difficult to find a new job. Addicted to gambling gives more trouble to someone, especially when he/she doing a bad thing such as commit crimes so he/she can have money.
Playing gambling must have control so they don't have to gets addicted to gambling. Now, she must regret of what her doing and will not doing that again while she must cure her addiction.

As I understand it, the dumbest people go to prison and this is exactly the case  Grin
In her situation, it was naive to think that her tricks would go unnoticed, maybe the plan was to win a lot of money and then return the stolen goods? In any case, I would not blame gaming addiction for everything - such crimes are committed even simply from greed or the desire for easy money.

People who have a big ambition to fulfill their ego, namely meeting the needs of their gambling addiction, will do any tricks and ways so that they can get money to gamble, maybe this is one case that we can see, how someone can plan a theft to get money. There are other addicts who resort to extortion or violence, sell their property or their family just to get money and be able to gamble contentedly.

Again, the never-ending problem of addiction makes a person think maliciously just to get money, and what makes him upset is to gamble, a prison sentence for that employee is a place for rehabilitation in my opinion, because he will be away from the internet or gambling environment he will receive direct guidance from police officers to become a good person when socializing again after getting out of prison.

There is no need to feel sorry for a person like this, because it is his time to learn and understand his mistakes and repent for the excessive gambling that brought him that far.

It is unfortunate that a lady at that age could do such a thing to satisfy her gambling urge. This is the extent to which an addicted gambler could go just to make sure that they gamble.

Looking at it from the professional angle, she just breached the banking code of engagement to have stolen money from the elderly as a result of their ill health thinking they would not know about it. This act of hers is unprofessional and would be made to face disciplinary actions.

Like the other poster had said, we should endeavour to monitor financial transactions of our elders ie out parents, uncles, aunt's, etc so that they do not gave same treatment from the bank or whatever you call them. I believe sometimes why the bankers does this is because they do not see any young person going to the bank with the so they feel like the elder is all alone and if they steal from them they would not know and so they go on with their wicked act by stealing from their accounts. I believe the law would hold her accountable for her actions.

It was a pretty crazy act especially when it was a woman that made me open my mind a little where in the end regardless of gender when someone already has a big addiction then they will not think logically especially in gambling.
But on the other hand, cases like this have also become commonplace because several times in my country there was also a similar case where there was someone who worked in a bank but actually embezzled the customer's money even a much larger nominal because if calculated in the dollar exchange rate, the total nominal used was more than $70000.

https://surabaya.kompas.com/read/2024/06/13/080530378/bri-tindak-tegas-oknum-pegawai-yang-gelapkan-uang-nasabah-untuk-judi-online

It's important to note that there are a number of different types of gambling that can be done by anyone, but not everyone can do gambling maturely because it is not uncommon for many who gamble in the end to be unable to escape the problem of addiction so that we must still be able to control ourselves properly when we are in gambling so that we don't let the activities we do harm ourselves and others.

When it comes to addiction then we do know that there would really be no age that would really be that on exemption and this is why it would really be that important that you should really
know on what are the things that you are dealing with and if you are really that a gambler then try to avoid to make yourself that getting addicted because on the moment that you would really be that hooked up too much with gambling then for sure you would really be doing things that you didnt tried out before. Yes, back on your head on which you do know that you are doing a crime but
on the moment that gambling urge would really be that kicking up so badly then you would really be ending up on doing that stuff. It would really be that not shocking that addicted gamblers
would really be going into that extent on trying out to make something that normal people wont do specially on making use of other peoples money without permission.
She deserves on getting imprisoned for that one.

The truth is certain that even if somehow bankers steal customer balances, they have actually forgotten that all their activities are monitored by CCTV and even though they carry out theft activities outside of duty hours, they will still be detected easily because the security of the bank system has been improved.

I actually didn't expect cases like this to be reported so often in newspapers, they are generally workers or bankers who manage money or treasurers in a company, they generally work in jobs with a nominal monthly salary above the average but unfortunately their gambling addiction has ruined their career because they will definitely be fired if the staff has sought funds for gambling.

Do you really think this act was as a cause of gambling addiction? I can remember then at my region someone intentionally did something wrong and term it as influence of alcohol therefore the case hold no meaning and he was forgiven. Usually anyone who did something out of influence of any hard substance be it alcohol or gambling may not be that effective while handling the case in court. To me the victim might be doing this for long time but after having caught up decided to lia against being a gambling using it as a defensive tools maybe who could be sent to rehabilitation.

Families must be attentive to their elders when going to the bank and dealing with money in general.

Just get them an online account and check how they're doing. Set daily limits.
None of that will work though if the bank employee is the one stealing. They could change the amount you're withdrawing so that you get $1k but the account gets charged 10% more if they want to.
The deal is not to trust people too much, but if a bank is at fault it will usually return the money from insurance and then sue the employee to get back as much as it can.

The current banking system is very sophisticated. I don't know what the bank employee really thought that made him feel like he could beat the bank's system.
but from incidents like that, we can see how an addicted gambler can become very reckless in doing things that cross the line. The consequences of his actions will certainly receive appropriate recompense. This is proof that gambling addicts also harm other people. For those who are not mentally strong, it is better not to gamble.

She thinks that she is strategic already to target only dormant accounts which are also from old people but unfortunately she got busted out. Most addicts won't think of that but they just stole money right away, as long as they have the chance and some still got lucky to not get caught out. They should use those chance to change, especially if they won decently with those money.

Another good thing that they can do is to bring back the money that they stole and maybe add some interest on it. They can use a different identity if they are scared. They can as well donate something to the charity and other people or organizations that they think in-need of it.
