That's probably just a coincidence in my opinion, this person wanted to subconsciously explain to himself how he won that lottery ticket and gut feel seems like the right thing to be considered as an explanation and people that don't have the explanation just got along with it, I mean that's how I see it so I'm not really sure if there's any case that it's got to do with instinct, it's just math and maybe if you're able to do the calculations, you can probably win yourself a hefty sum too but then again, the human mind is still in progress when it comes to comprehending and getting answers to the unknown things that we're seeing, so gut feel might really exist and we just don't know how to explain it to ourselves.

IMO, there's a whisper that will tell you to do it and it's up to us if we will listen or not. I had my share of a good luck instinct but it's not the same as this guy who won that large amount.
Same scenario, also a scratch card. I went to the grocery and there was a lottery booth and I saw that it is also selling scratch cards. There are 20 pesos and 50 pesos different cards, I was supposed to just buy the 20 pesos scratch cards but something tells me I should buy the 50 pesos ones. I did.
I scratched it and I won 500 pesos. Instincts. I cashed it out to the outlet and walked away. Next to a successful instinct must be discipline. Don't be greedy.

So in case where you are buying a lottery or scratch ticket, would you abide by your gut's feeling whether to purchase to bet on the combination of a number?  Do you believe that instinct can help a person win in a chance based gambling games?

I'm a regular lotto bettor and scratch ticket buyer and most of the time I rely on my instinct, but my instinct can only get me 2 or 3  correct numbers but I still follow them, my reason is there's a feeling of excitement or fulfillment even if you hit 2 or 3 numbers instead of doing lucky pick totally relying on luck.

Its pure luck that you hit a jackpot that coincides with your gut feeling, and there's no mathematical calculation involved, so far I have not heard of one lottery winner who is a math professor and uses his skill to win the jackpot.

Whenever I win it's always going to be a "gut" feeling. I won after doing gathering info between two evenly matched teams? Gut feeling. I won after randomly visiting a casino on my birthday? Gut feeling. Mathematical calculation is just absolute bs imo, it serves to tackle the problem across multiple instances, not just a single instance so it's never going to be the reason for a win. The odds don't even take into account how many tries/bets you've made in the first place, don't see any reason why it would be a valid reason for winning.

It's always going to be a gut feeling in gambling imo no matter what. If it's not or if some maths were used to actually win, is that even gambling in the first place?

I believe in one instinct if it's related to their job. For example, a detective feels that a person is suspicious, or how somebody can detect lies from body language so quickly, etc. It's hard to know the line between instinct and just laziness though. The difference is whether they follow it up with more research, etc. But instinct in making bets is a huge mistake IMO. At best you can tell that a casino is sketchy from how they conduct their business, but there's no way I can believe someone suddenly has a feeling that the number 8 is lucky today and wins every bet they've made. I did something similar but I got out with terrible results instead.

This arguement has come up time and time again. I am beginning to feel that it will never end and there's never going to be a winner.  The reason why I think so is because there's always going to be those who are for the "gut-feeling" and those who are for the "mathematical calculation" point of view. What I think is everyone is right. I believe that our gut feeling works wonders when we listen to it. I also believe that mathematical calculations work too however this comes with experience. However, the most powerful of it is the combination of the both of them - gut feeling plus mathematical calculations. If the person in the story say it was his gut feeling that made him won, we should argue about it or try to explain it away with a theory. We are not him.

I am pretty sure everyone has a 'gut feeling' when gambling. When the bet does not pan out the way they hope, the never seem to blame their gut. But they always praise their gut whenever the bet turns into a win.

It's normal for people to brag about their luck, guts, calculation and even premonition when they win in gambling but they will never tell anybody when they lose, despite any special gifts that they think they have. I'm sure that thousands or even millions of gamblers and lottery players have a gut feeling that they are going to win, but eventually they lose. This guy is an exception, but I don't think that he is a fortune teller or something. He got lucky and his gut feeling was a coincidence.

Truth is we all know that gambling is basically based on luck but sometimes we do have positive feelings about something and it turns out to be so, it's also true that we can have this feeling yet it turnout to be the wrong choice, there is no justification for that it's just luck.

Whether the man in this case claims it's because he had a positive gut, it's either their is a conspiracy about the win or he was just lucky.

What if he has lost the bet/gamble and then what would he said that he was positive but lost ? I think this is no conspiracy or any positive attitude made him winner, it was just luck.
We hear stories that gamblers gamble with all their savings in one go, aren't they confident and positive to win 100% and that's why take take such big risk, but they still lose.

No unfortunately no such thing exists, it's just our brain that likes to play tricks on us and we shouldn't fall for them. First of all, doesn't everybody have a good feeling when placing a bet, playing loterry or is buying a scratch ticket? At least for me I only play when my gut tells me it's a lucky day. For more than 15 years I have been playing scratch tickets always thinking today is the day where I am going to win the big jackpot, but it never happens. I do have some decent profits where I make 20 Euros from the 2 Euro ticket, but that isn't really much comparing to many tickets I have already bought. My grand father played both lottery and scratch tickets all his life and never won millions over 30-40 years. Our gut is not a good indicator of us actually winning, in trading they have done so many tests and shown that emotions are not a good basis for a profitable trading strategy.  The guy was just lucky with his tickets, there will always be one winner for the jackpot in these scratch tickets.

The positive feeling can be the light to the financial freedom sometimes, as we can see on this article. It doesn't mean every single ticket purchase with the same feelings will be key to the same result that has been achieved by that person. There is concrete mathematics behind the scene on the gambling, so no matter how smart or educated gambler is the chances are zero to get edge over the casino. Just my 2 cents.

I am not a supporter of believing in the paranormal abilities of gamblers and prefer to believe in number theory and statistical coincidence (luck). Therefore, I assume that this lucky guy was just lucky, because anyone else who bought that prize ticket could have been in his place.

I would buy multiple tickets (diversification) to increase the chances that at least one of them will be a winner. Discussing gambling instincts on a technical forum looks like blasphemy to me.

For me, the person involved in the story just got a lucky coincidence that he has chosen the winning scratch ticket and has nothing to do with his gut's feeling.  Everyone has a positive gut feeling whenever they are engaging in chance-based gambling games and a majority of them fail miserably losing all their bankroll and even beyond that.

Unless you have the power to see the future, it's more likely just a coincidence. Personally, I've experienced winning a lottery (though not the major jackpot) by just thinking of a combination of numbers. I tried it again the next day and lost. So, it's superstitious to believe we can consistently win. The mathematical calculations, which give us a slim chance, still apply to this kind of game. We need to be realistic and not ambitious, thinking we can win consistently. This kind of game is meant to be played for fun, using only a small amount, due to its very slim chances.

Likely? It is not likely but certainly that it is luck. What that deceived the person to believe it is his initiative is because he might truly think of the number and win the lottery. Anyone that such happened to can also believe that if the person do not think in other ways like we do. But that is what that is called coincidence and it is 100% luck.

If he thinks it is his initiative, let him continue with other lotteries and see if he is going to win. After several losses, he will understand that it is just luck and nothing more than luck.

When you win or rich, people will listen to you and will try to follow anything you do.

When you lose or broke, even you give a lot motivation and knowledge to people for free, they will not listen, instead they will say you're bullshit.

It's same like this one, when someone win something, they can say anything they like and people will believe it. I never believe in such spiritual or magic, so it's just a coincidence.
