Been meaning to ask this for some time as I’m just curious. But can anyone address what happened to him? Helly and I would chat often, and I enjoyed our frequent conversations, just a really cool guy IMO. Then one day poof, vanished like a fart in the wind. I dunno if any mods can share anything, but it would just be good to know the guy is okay. Guessing I get no answers here but figured I’d ask.  Cheers

(Let’s leave politics out of this plz).

It's been years since I last heard from him. He was growing tired of the forum and then stopped logging in altogether, but I bet he's probably doing OK. Its not impossible to imagine how burnouts can happen, or that things are just more fun in real life.

That's the good and bad thing about this forum. The anonymity it provides means that if you disappear it could be because you have died of a heart attack or simply because you have decided to leave the forum without telling anyone or leaving a trace. I venture to think that in most cases it is the latter. I hope someone can reassure the OP that Flying Hellfish simply decided to leave the forum and is doing OK.

I hope he is well, I didn't think time had passed so quickly, but the last login to the account was from 2021.
I found that he won some Collectibles, so if you ask about him there, they may help you with more information about him, but since he decided to stop using the forum, it is best to respect his privacy.

We discussed this in depth for sure (imagine moderating BAD every day lol). I said no politics but I’m only slightly breaking my rule as I kinda have to..but one thing he expressed to me was that he truly tried to mod fairly, and not based on his own political beliefs.  One thing I really admired about Theymos, he hired a guy with often conflicting political ideals. From the little I’ve spent in that sub and noticed, anyhow. Anyway Helly def respected that and I know he tried for some time, but surely found chatting it up in that sub is a whole different ballgame than moderating it. He often took criticism and it really wasn’t fair.  (I don’t think I’m breaking any news to you here).

That's the good and bad thing about this forum. The anonymity it provides means that if you disappear it could be because you have died of a heart attack or simply because you have decided to leave the forum without telling anyone or leaving a trace. Not anonymous to me, but his current “state” is, unfortunately. He closed the second communication channel around the last time we chatted here.  I was not shocked him leaving the forum, but cutting off our other line of communication was a bit surprising. I do just truly hope the guy is doing well. That’s all I’d love to hear.

Yeah, I’m one of them over in collectibles. Thats how I got to chatting w Helliy. I don’t think he was very close w many of us nerds over in that board though. I certainly respect his privacy, not looking to track him down. Just curious if he’s doing alright.

@ChiBitCTy, have you ever sent PM to @Flying Hellfish since he inactive?
If @Flying Hellfish uses an active email on his forum account, then maybe it will get notifications about your PM. This is just a solution I thought of, for example if you are really curious about how things are going. Of course we have to respect the privacy of other users including @Flying Hellfish and don't need to know the reason why they left, but curiosity is sometimes hard to contain.

But anyway, I hope he's okay even though he's no longer active on the forum.

That's unfortunate, because I always liked him and remember how excited he was when he got the moderator job and how much he wanted it (this is if I'm remembering the posts he made just before and after he was made a mod), and he had a pleasant personality and could write well.

I've seen a number of people I know start to decline over the past few years, and I'm not talking geriatrics either.  People are getting beaten down, by each other or by the world itself and sometimes I think we've so slowly morphed into a swirling, hellish nightmare of constant negativity in society that it's hard to pinpoint when it happened exactly.  Anyway, that said I don't know if Flying Hellfish's situation has anything to do with that.  I do wish him the best.

Also, it would not surprise me one bit if he burned out on this forum way faster than he ever imagined.  Sadly, it's only gotten worse since he left IMO.

I too believe he left and did not die.

His last two posts were a month apart, with his final one being an obvious joke.  Looks to me like he was just bored with the politics.

I think that's true; the only thing you can do is voluntarily detach from society in general, or at least the one you're stuck with. As far as the forum is concerned, I would say having good manners for the sake of signature campaigns in conjunction with the way the trust system operates fosters a level of politeness on this forum not shared by much other social media. It wasn't always that way here. Incentives are everything.

I cannot recall engaging with Flying Hellfish directly but definitely do remember reading some of his posts and that avatar of his. We all hope he is doing well just as we would wish for any member that stopped posting without informing us of an impending hiatus or permanent exit.

In the end, respecting privacy is very important therefore even if someone has the means to contact an absent member outside the forum (not saying you do), maybe doing so will infringe that privacy whether we learn they are deceased or learn they did not want to be contacted in the first place.

Perhaps it’s a thing of common interest, where the lines was gradually getting blurry, interests gradually died out on the forum, reduced conversation and all together he let loose having to be saddled with the burdens that comes with making judgements for some time and being duty bound to the forum.

It would be good to know if his hood though and it’s interesting how these anonymous friendship builds over the web, even so how it endures and how it ends. At least, he didn’t leave a note to not return, perhaps in years, when Bitcoin becomes a norm to society and the forum is more pronounced than it is, we would welcome a lot of inactive accounts/users.

One of the reasons why folks gotta check on their closest. I have visited several isolated profiles - profiles I actually thought were still very active, but to my greatest surprise, they were long gone.. I seldom have this feeling of heaviness, clutching tight to my device, I'd keep wondering what had befell them.
....and Yes, uncertainty is as good as suspense; y'all never know what he's struggling with and, I'm afraid we'll never know!
That's unfortunate, because I always liked him and remember how excited he was when he got the moderator job and how much he wanted it[...]
I've never had any conversations or direct dealings with hellfish, neither have I seen any of his post, but let's be a bit realistic... Do y'all think he got tired after being made a Mod? Okay, I've got a question; For how long has he held the position before he became inactive?

I dunno if any mods can share anything

I'm not going to be very helpful, I have just checked and FH hasn't made a leaving message or anything like that in the Staff section. Maybe he notified Theymos or another mod via PM, but I don't know.

I made this post close to 4 years ago and got no traction: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5279484

Sometimes i also wonder what happened to users who suddenly became inactive. Goodbye threads can be sad, but at the same time reassuring that the user is going away and will prolly never come back to the forum, but sudden exits will always raise questions like the one in the OP. I don't blame users who want to silently leave, they have their own reasons, though there are users you grow fond of, because of their writing style and other whatnots, and you wish to have tea with them if possible, but privacy always comes first in this our world.

I haven't thought about this, but it is a simple way to contact someone who left for a long time. This will only work well if they somehow registered in this forum with their personal email address. But if they created an email address only because of the forum, as they exit the forum, they could also forget the email.

But anyway, I hope he's okay even though he's no longer active on the forum.
I haven't even come across such a username. I registered here on May 2021. This means he must have disappeared before I joined the forum.

Not to veer way off-topic, but it's nearly impossible to detach from society to any great extent and still be able to live and maintain one's sanity.  It's particularly hard if there's little money in your pocket and you need to work for a living.

Anyway, having good manners has never been a rule for any signature campaign I've ever seen.  Maybe a lot of members think they need to have an absolutely emotionless, neutral tone when they write but they don't need to do that.  Not only that, by writing very vague and impersonal posts, they end up earning no merit, never establish themselves as a forum personality, and basically they wind up with a post history consisting of stuff I'd never ever want to read in a million fucking years.

And no, it wasn't always this way.  That's what I've been saying.

In many ways not much has changed since the fours passed from your post. Though as humans we all have many similar traits, we are also very different and out interpretation of privacy and respect of that privacy varies from person to person (and could be influenced by social settings or cultural norms). When you look at way some members received a lot of abuse even after announcing they were leaving the forum, to some degree it is understandable why many would want a low-key exit.

As for the number that are incapable of accessing their account via illness or death, those number I suppose will not be known.

I made this post close to 4 years ago and got no traction: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5279484

For some reason I guess people here are a bit more private then other forums. If I disappeared there are a couple of people who have my contact info who could probably hunt me down with a little effort or at least someone who knows me. Even if I stopped answering calls & texts they know where I work / live.

That is true, some persons register here with disposable email, but on arriving and seeing how important here is, they'll change the disposable email to a correct email. It has happened to many people...

Yea, that's 2 months difference from my registration date. That means I was still a newbie or a jr member. And haven't acquainted myself with the forum users before he left the forum.
