You are lucky to have that situation, as it’s very stressful when you are watching the game and betting on it, unless that’s what you do most of the time or you are fully focused on gambling. I think on the contrary, hesitation is failure, hesitation means we do not trust our own decisions, and cannot come up with the best plan. In Op's story, if those 3 people lose, the story will turn in a different direction: they will feel lucky because they didn't bet everything they had.
