Electrum wallet Customer Care Service Number - Scam!!!

I am trying to learn about Electrum wallet, after reading some posts about problems with Electrum connection, server, proxy settings.

I am surprised when I found this article on Medium by Google Search.

First the username is strange: @metamask.2999 and I started to be cautious.
Second I scan the article and see

It is repeated written in the article and scanning through the article, no guide at all. Only repeatedly direct to that phone number.

Newbies, if searching and finding this article, be very careful because it's scam guide.

The official website of Electrum wallet is https://electrum.org/
No phone number for customer care at all.

I don't know what will they do to scam people if people contact via that phone number but make sure you are careful with your action.

People who can get scammed with this kind scams is don't have skill "how to google".

Medium, wordpress, blogger etc are platforms where anyone can write freely, so if they trust random strangers over official websites, they need to learn how to google.

This kind scams happen in everywhere, I will not be surprised if you will see fake Electrum customer service number in twitter, email, facebook etc.

Obviously the user behind that account is a scammer and isn't even hiding it. The format from what I observe is simple. Whatever wallet that they write about, they attach the same phone number as their customer care service number. It isn't something that should be difficult for anyone to spot and avoid even if the person is not a in the crypto space. I did my bit my reporting the post and account. Unfortunately, Medium. com doesn't have an option for "scam". The reporting options are "harassment", "Abuse", and "spam". They can't act like they don't know that some folks use their platforms to perpetrate a scam.

Electrum is an open source software and it has no company or single person in charge controlling it it's more like a Free open source software. Majority of open source softwares just like ELECTRUM rely on free donations to fund the project. This reason alone is enough to let a smart person know that such a software won't have a customer care service.

Customer care services are for softwares, businesses or services that the developers or owners make profit from their customers so a customer care service is there to assist in keeping their customers.In the case of Electrum, the developers make no money from we using one of the safest open source softwares(Electrum). Open source softwares are free and no one is forced to use them. Think of Electrum as a gift from genuine bitcoin supporters.

Open source softwares are the best that is why it is nice to make donations to such projects like Electrum.

This is a scam targeted at newbies who are likely to fall for it. The telephone number itself is a red flag but for most newbies, it will be the reason why they will fall for the scam. Charles-Tim has given all the relevant links for the Electrum wallet which should be used in case if there is an issue. Their only presence on social media is on X.com (previously known as Twitter). They are active but not hyperactive as their last tweet was in May this year.

Not only newbies actually, you only know that there's isn't a specific customer care like this because of the awareness given by the forum and what you've been reading....
Thus, you can't expect a regular  user of Electrum who eventually ran into am issue not to believe those fake info especially  when it's pressing  although, the larger percentage of victim will definitely be newbies .

Quite a lot, if an unsuspecting user calls that phone number, prolly to complain about an issue or things they do not understand about their electrum wallet, the impostor scammer might tell them to call out their seed phrase to them, so that he can solve the problem from his own end, if the victim is not aware that it is a scam, they will call out their seed phrase and scammer will steal their money.

The scammer can also use it to send phishing links via SMS to whoever calls the number, and so many more things they can do. I always say that this forum is the place to be for anyone who uses crypto, you learn about scams like this and become immune to it.

Anyone can write in Medium, but getting your article in google's first page isn't that easy. You need a very good SEO, or pay to be on top (in that case yes, skilled members won't take the bait).

Apart from that, I agree that it is clearly targeted at newbies, not only because anyone with a little knowledge on how wallets like electrum work wouldn't fall for a "customer care telephone number" but because I guess that what they are asked if they call is their seed; and who with a minimum of knowledge and in their right mind would do that?

If we are not giving the necessary observation needed as you have just did OP by detecting for this and its possible attempt for scam, the same way some have come across this and fall for it, they will even take a courage step in contacting them for the support needed thinking they are the real electrum official contact line, to later deduce they have already been scammed from what had been requested of them.

I came across the same article some days ago. If you look at the author’s history, they are just spamming lots of articles about different crypto services hoping to eventually lure some victims. If you google the phone number you will see that they are using multiple Medium accounts and are also spamming forums with this scam.

Anybody with common sense will not fall for this, but it’s still important to have this thread as a warning to newbies that are naive enough to think it might be legitimate because it appears in search results.

This is the same with the scam that is using PayPal, Amazon, Google, Microsft, and other known companies to trick these victims by portraying their customer service.
Researching should be a basic skill nowadays to verify whether such things if they're real or not, we may not be targeted by these cons but, sadly, there could be a rare few folks that might fall for this scam.

They have the skill how to google, reason why they stumbled on the article, what they are lacking is the ability to verify the validity of the information.  Lots of fake articles, news had been lurking the google search, so knowing "how to google" does not automatically mean we will be acquiring valid information.  Always verify the Google search result before proceeding.

True that, scammers also use the power of SEO, they are better than official sites in using this optimization.  So we better not trust the first site result in searching google, always verify and validate the information.

Great initiative, but I doubt it will help in any way the people who would fall for this Scam.  You really need only an Internet Search or two to find out it is not a legitimate thing and that there is no need for a 'Customer Service' number at all.  The targets of this Scam are the people who do not do research at all and rely on the first information they find, the same people who most likely believe that things that are on the Internet must be true because they are on the Internet.

Anyway, good initiative and great intention shown.  Definitely deserve a Merit or two.

Catching their schemes and polarizing it has been one of the means to ensure they don’t do great damage to people and this might just be one dangerous scheme on the rise as I see it. Pretending to be the customer support to a non custodian wallet, that’s unheard of but, there are those that would be victim.

These scammers took particular note to replicate the contact in several places because, that’s what they want you to do, that’s where the game is. It’s the only option as once you dial the number, you play there game.
I see it as unnecessary though as, the closest thing to support any non custodian wallet user might need is with the seed phrase which is unrecoverable once it’s lost. You either find it or your Bitcoin is gone for good.

Everyone can use the Internet, everyone can use Google, everyone can use computer, smart phone, everyone can use Bitcoin blockchain or wallets, we all can do it.

Issue is from we can not use it safely by many reasons like lack of enough education, knowledge, experience or we know all of these but simply are careless in our practices. Hackers can catch us if we practice unsafely in one of these from knowledge to practice.

There always are people like that but not too many. I sometimes read on newspapers that people got scammed in many easy scam ways and I am surprised, curious on how were they scammed too easily.

It is a trap for newbies when they have questions that they want to ask and through that trap is how they scam people by pretending to be rhe customer support of electrum wallet. If a newbie doesn't make any research at all then it is possible that they will fall into this trap but if they did make some research then they should know where to contact electrum if they have problems that needs support from electrum or when they have something to ask.
