Paris '24 - Breaking !

Just listening to an article on the Radio on new "Sports" for the Paris 2024 Olympics, one of
them which I really found bizzare was "Breaking" or Breakdancing. Anyone of us of a certain
age will remember a craze of the late 70's early 80's.

With Skateboarding which is a new one two questions came to mind:

1.] Will any of the betting platforms actually have Breaking listed?
2.] Will anyone even bother betting on "games"? "events"?

I went searching, obviously tried Rollbit first and didnt see it listed but they
do have skateboarding listed!
I then tried Sportsbet and sure enough they have Breaking listed and the Boys/Girls events.

A sport is whatever the regulating body says it is. As the world changes I think we are now being more inclusive. And this isn't going to stop at break dance as a sport, we are going to see more "lesser known activities/competitions" classified as sports. And funny enough there are people who would prefer to watch break dance over football. And they will take their passion further by wanting to put their money where their mouth it. They will do this by betting. Sports betting platforms will include this sport because folks who love it will bet on it. And since it is likely to increase their revenue no matter how small, they should add it to their betting platform.

Thats what I was thinking that it would be a very niche gambling group who would be in the know,
I wonder if someone who was addicted take a shot at these events?
Or would there be gamblers out there who will be researching this event and will make a bet on them?

I will not bet in any sports where I'm not familiar with it, it's like a blind betting.

There's always a person like non-mainstream thing, even football is really interesting to watch, but people who're a dancer will have more interest to watch break dance.

Sports it’s anything that display skills and compete against other player or teams.

We already have figure skating on olympics which is same classification on breakdancing since they are both displaying of their talents using their form. Even playing games is now sports that categorized as e-sports. Break is more sports than e-sports though based on original description of sports. It’s just unorthodox now because it’s new.

I'm sure that there will be people willing to bet on such a type of sport, because breakdancing has been around since the 70s and most likely it already has its own community and fans who are interested in betting on their choice.

Even Microsoft Excel has become an esports tournament now, especially breakdancing which requires physical skills, strength, agility, creativity, a person's style, and various other factors, it makes sense to include breakdancing as a sport. And these reasons are the considerations for the Olympic committee to include breakdancing on the list of sports that will be competed. and I myself don't really mind it, because I've seen a sport that is much stranger than breakdancing, namely "curling", even though I don't know what sport it is, I still enjoy it lol.

This is a good question, I'm already seeing some completely different opinions on this issue, and I think there will be more differences. For me, dancing is not a sport, but I have a similar opinion about synchronized swimming and figure skating. It's quite clear that these disciplines also require a lot of practice, physical fitness, skills, and talent... but still, it's all a kind of dance in the end, and I have never been much of a dancer. Although they also compete, a jury evaluates these dances and votes, but these are still people who can like something or not... a goal is a goal, and in sports there must be some clear rules.

But more interestingly is anyone going to be betting on these?

When they got to the Olympics, there are certainly a lot of people who are interested in Breaking. So there will be those who will bet on something like this, people bet on anything and everything. But I doubt it will be as popular as some other sports, probably will stay that way in the future... I'm one of those people who won't follow this, and I won't bet on it either.

Of course breaking and skate are sports. Why not? It's a different kind of sport of course because they depend on ratings from judges to get a ranking but sure enough they require physical activity and are naturally an activity that can be classified as sport.

We have more traditional sports where athletes also get ratings from judges such as diving and rhythmic gymnastics. It was a long time coming for skating especially given the popularity it has had in the last millennium. It deserves the legitimacy given how much sportsmanship is displayed by those practicing the sport and also how much outreach it has with the youth.

They're including some sports which may be strange for us to get interest from Tik Tok generation. Youngsters don't want to watch tennis match for 3 hours or football for 2 hours, but these things might be interesting for them.
I don't see problem to class these things as sports. C'mon, even Esports is considered as sport nowadays  . But I'm a bit scpetical about sports where only way declare winner is jury decision. For example gymnastics, figure skating or breaking. When everything is in hands or referees there might be subjective decisions. I rather would watch things like darts or snooker in Olympics.

the rate at which the world is evolving is just insane, the things we never thought hard anything to do with sports has now become sports with a lot of followers around the world. At the time when sex sports was literally flying across the media platform, people where eager to see it coming to reality and it would have attracted a lot of followers ranging close to soccer. I've never considered break dancing as a sort of sports untill today that I'm seeing this and from what I'm seeing, it appears as though you could place a bet for it which even makes it more interesting.

people's choices differs and although football is very popular, thier are people that aren't a fan of football not even a single day and would prefer unpopular sports like skipping to football. For a brake dancer or a regular dancer, when an option is given to choose between football and breakdance, it's 100% going to be brake dance anyday, anytime and if they are to place a bet, it's going to be more likely that they would want to stake on brake dancing.

Sometime last year some crazy organisers tried to include sex as a sport. They even went ahead to organize a sex sports competition that failed. Breakdancing can be categorized as a sport because it requires physical energy and skills. However, my problem will be how the judges will be able to rate the participants. Maybe they will have some skills or certain moves they will be looking out for as they observe participants. Skateboarding was long overdue to be included as a major sporting activity. It has general acceptance and is very technical. These sports as well as the officiating will keep improving in the future.

People who will bet on these games will be those who have experience. Since these sports are new, one might not know who to bet on. But those who are experienced can easily identify the better participants to place a bet on. I wouldn't place a bet on this game since I know nothing about them.

My initial thinking was that awarding points in Breaking would be subjective, as in the judges
score the participants on style, execution etc. Would it not be hard to back a winner because
any number of possibilities could rule that potential winner out? but yea I suppose the same
could be said for Diving, Rhythmic Gymnastics and arguably Boxing.

I'm coming around to the idea that yes it is a viable Olympic sport and yes possibly wagers
will be made as to who could win.

I might even try and watch it and especially be interested in the commentary and pre-dance
opinions.

Definitely a fascinating addition. It's exciting to see such diverse and dynamic sports being recognized on this global stage. Betting platforms are gradually expanding their offerings to include niche sports, so it's possible we'll see more platforms adding Breaking as the event approaches.

I'd say they absolutely qualify as for classifying them as sports. Sports are about physical activity, skill, and often a competitive element, all of which Breaking and skateboarding have in abundance. Just like in diving or gymnastics, judges rate performances based on specific criteria, making them legitimate sports.

I haven’t looked into what events are able to be bet on yet but some of these games sound interesting. It might be fun to mess around a little bit but I won’t pretend to have any idea who any of these competitors are, despite them being the best in the world at their field.

They might add it under Olympics, a lot of bookies have crammed a ton of sports in that section as probably they don't have a single event of it out of the Olympics so it makes no sense to create a new category for a thing that will be dead by tomorrow!

As for the sports itself, well, we have 3 types of gymnastics and artistic swimming, so...
