Eclipse - Finally happened / Lifetime ban from eBay.

Hello everyone,

I wanted to update the community and let everyone know that the official Eclipsepayments eBay account I have been operating since 2020 got restricted yesterday and I took a lifetime ban from the platform.

In the future moving forward you will not be seeing anything from Eclipse on eBay anymore.

All products and services will be sold through my personal website (Eclipsepayments.com) and directly through the forum and other channels from now on.

I figured this was a long-time coming and I took personal precautions to migrate my products and services to other platforms in advance.

When eBay split off from PayPal I had high hopes that the company would become more legitimate, and less like the scamming pos they were. Sadly eBay didn’t get any better (nor has PayPal).  I have countless friends who’ve been fd over by eBay ( & PayPal) for no good reason at all, some having their accounts closed permanently.

I’m curious as to why as well, but selling funded btc items im assuming..too. From what I’ve been told eBay likes to not tell users why they’ve been permanently banned and I’m not sure there’s any legal obligation to do so either. 

They mention any listing fees for items that were up for sale , that are now closed, will not be refunded. So they straight up steal from members by doing this..not surprising. I don’t sell often enough there and haven’t for many years to get to the point where they would charge to list items but wondering if this is common practice , to collect fees from listings up front , for frequent sellers ?

I am using ebay since 15-20 years and I had some issues too (around 1-2% of my total sales...)
Unfortunately they are the biggest / most visited place for selling collectible stuff (at least here in Italy). It's also very easy and quick
Even if I tried other options (like delcampe or catawiki) no one has been able to have the same visibility / fees.
Auction houses most of the times have a lot of restrictions and become useless for items not expensive ...

The issue with eBay is and has always been it's their house & their rules but they don't apply them evenly.

Sometimes it's 1 strike and you are out other times it's 5 strikes and you are gone.

It seems to really depend on the amount of sales (both number and $) and how long you have been there.

It's not fair but me having an account for over 25 years at this point is going to get a lot more leeway then Eclipse with a 4 or 5 year old account.
A friend of mine with a 10 year old account that is doing 1000s and 1000s of dollars of sales a month and 1000s and 1000s of purchases a month is going to get a lot more leeway then me because although I have been there longer for the most part he does more every month in sales and purchases then I do in a year or even two years.

It all comes down to the bottom line, help eBays a lot and you will get away with more then someone else.

It's not fair, it's business.

I always had an ick* with ebay as well as paypal - mostly because of their monopoly position and their blatant abuse (ridiculous fees and bad customer service) of it.

Couldn't agree more, when I read that part of their email my first reaction was "what a scam".

That said I understand it's for the most part still the #1 place to go if you want to sell anything worldwide. I just wish there was some more healthy competition and less ridiculous regulation / TOS / whateverlaws in regards of Bitcoin.

@Eclipse33 I'm curious if you know what the exact reason for the ban was and if you had any previous strikes or otherwise any contact with them warning you about possibly breaching their TOS.

But..they are a publicly traded company so they don’t own the entire eBay business by a long shot.  I’m pretty confident shareholders (I’m sure I’ve got this shithole of a company represented in some fund I own unfortunately) wouldn’t be okay with their “we govern by our own accord and don’t have to tell you why either” attitude.  Sure any owner of any company should know its bylaws but eBay plays outside of those too, as we all know.

This is very sad news, Eclipse... Would you like to share more details about the reason for this unfortunate event (in case you have more information from eBay)?

From my perspective, you are a trustful user of the forum and, as a proof, everybody can read the positive feedbacks you received through time. We also had a collaboration for renting my signature and, in the end, things finished in a good manner.

Now, of course, eBay will not take into account feedbacks given to you on the forum but, at same time, I don't understand what led to to this. In any case, I am very sorry to hear about what happened with you. At same time, I believe you did not rely only on eBay... there are many other platforms on which you can sell your products.

There have been a couple over the years. The most famous one being OpenBazaar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenBazaar

The issue keeps coming down to trust. For all the crap that eBay is, it does offer some form of protection. Not great protection, not a lot of protection, but some.

Anything that is decentralized is going to rely on a bunch of people with different opinions and views on some things that will make it a lot harder to trust people.

Heck, look at some of the moderators here. Some will remove posts because it 'kind of looks wrong' others let more things slide. Do you really want to have that happen with actual $ and merchandise on the line.

Ah, but they have their 'get of of jail free' card with the ability to say a person doing a lot of transactions both sales and purchases is less likely to 'have an issue' then someone like me who has a few things up for sale now and then and very rarely buys stuff. And then they can produce a whole bunch of charts and graphs and cherry picked data to back up that point.

Looking at the account it looks like in the last 90 days Eclipsepayments had 1 sale a little over a month ago:

They always end up getting closed down. 10 years ago sites like this were pretty common in Bitcoin. Unfortunately over the last decade Bitcoin use cases have been getting squashed by regulators faster than new innovation has occurred. This has led us to where we are now…pushing Bitcoin as a store of value. Support innovators and new use cases!

In delcampe I have just 10-15 lots no more, actually they can't compete... Ebay drives many traffic even on specialized items that has just few estimators.
Same items in delcampe doens't get sold even if heavy discounted. This is an issue because I hate ebay with their ridicolous approach to the site.
Regarding DAC7 , I was not aware of the change and I am still sending a private message with details for direct payment

By the way, I had just few issues with ebay, but each time it's like impossible talk with a real person that understand 1% of what he is doing on that role or the terms of the company he is working for. At least in a couple of cases they have not applied their rules in a controversy... only copy&paste answers completely non sense.
they changed a lot after the initial launch. I think that they will change anymore maybe "removing" all sellers that doesn't have the shop or are not generating enough fees.
