Why some wallet don't display seed phrase?

Good day, members of this great forum! I come with a few questions that are confusing me, and I'd appreciate a little explanation. Here is  my question.

What can I do to recover my funds if I lose access to my wallet due to computer failure or lost phone, and I don't know my seed phrase, especially if the wallet didn't display the seed phrase during setup?

Only custodial wallets and centralised exchange wallets do not display your seed phrase when you are creating a wallet for the first time , it's important to back up the wallet offline so you can still access the wallet even if the device is not accessible at the moment by accessing the wallet via another device through your seed phrase.

What wallet are you making use of Op? Is it an open source wallet like ELECTRUM or a closed source wallet like unstoppable? The point is whether open source or closed source you can find the seed to your wallet with a few toggles. It's also possible to access the wallet via your master key since it's next in line after your seed phrase.

If you are using a non-custodial wallet, you will be given a seed upon opening a new wallet. It usually ask you to copy out this seed and store it safely. Aside exchange account or custodial wallets, where they literally hold the key to your funds, you should find your seedphrase in you wallet any time you need it. Just go to settings, you will find it. Always remember to back up your seed, and use wallets that give you total control of your keys.

Which usually signifies custodial wallets where a third party helps manage your funds like a bank but with a unique access or password.

Most custodial wallet don't use same recovery method so it would be best if you can share the name of the wallet you currently using.

If you use custodial wallets, you won't have access to either private keys or mnemonic seed phrases.

If you use non-custodial wallets, you will have access to private keys and mnemonic seed phrases but some wallet softwares will hide your seed phrase by default. You have to click on Eyes icon to see these words. They do it to reduce risk that your device screen is traced by hackers who will steal your seed phrase and bitcoin.

Are you sure you are creating a non custodial wallet cause its 100% impossible not to have seed phrase or private key to any kind of wallet unless you make on a platform that is centralized or exchanges. There seed phrase cant really acquired.

To my knowledge, whenever I create a new wallet, they will show the 12 words and they ask us to fill missing words which a way to verify if we already write or save the seed phrase. So it's impossible for non custodial wallet can't show the seed phrase.

Even you're using custodial wallet, you can still access it because they ask email and password (except you enable 2FA, etc).

So in case you have a problem with your computer or lost your phone, you can still able to access your wallet.

If you don't have a seed phrase (or private key), you are using a custodial service and you don't have full control over your fund.

If you are using a custodial service, you should have an account on the service and your fund is kept by them and they only show you a number as your balance. If you lose account credentials like your password on a custodial service, you should be able to reset your password using your email address and regain access to your account.

What wallet concerns you? if it's not displaying the seed phrase upon creation, you better not use that wallet at all. It is usually given when you're about to make a wallet so, let us know what wallet you see.

That is a big red flag, do not use any Crypto wallet that doesn't give you access to your private key or recovery seed, they are called custodial wallets, meaning they are helping you to keep your keys, this also mean they can go behind your back and move your funds.

I learned this the hard way, I stored some coins on custodial wallets and I lost them all, I can't even remember the name anymore, but free wallet was on of them, I learned the difference from custodial wallets and non-custodial wallets.

There are also so many fake crypto wallets online, even on app stores, you need to find the names of the best crypto wallets that are non-custodial and also the official link too, this is the best way to avoid scam crypto wallet apps.

It sounds like you described a custodial wallet so to try to get your money back, you will need to contact the issuer of that wallet as they are the only one who can help.

Absolutely nothing you can do to recover your funds if you don't have the seed phrases. Refer to popular saying in this space; Not your key, not your coins. That's to tell you that the funds are not yours completely if you don't have the keys and you can possibly lose them any time.

Every wallet display seed phrase upon registration unless it is a custodial wallet (mostly exchanges). You probably skipped the page that displays your seed phrase unknowingly.

Next time, please be specific when asking a question so you can get a clear answer. If you have mentioned the wallet, people will know if it's a custodial or non custodial wallet.

If OP can withdraw bitcoins from that account, by submitting a withdrawal request, it's a thing to do now.

It is not important, if you can withdraw your bitcoin now, do it. As other people explained risk of custodial wallets to you, it's not time for you to worry more about how to back up a wallet that does not give you private keys or mnemonic seed. You can not change how that platform designed and how it serves users, but you can proactively withdraw your bitcoin, from it, to a non custodial wallet, as soon as possible.

If you leave your bitcoin there, and wait till a negative news about that platform, like withdrawal issues, bankrun, you will have bigger risk of losing your bitcoin.

I've never heard of any none custodial wallet that will not show you your seed phrase when you're creating it. Infact the wallet will display them randomly again and you'll have to select them in the right order. It's either a custodial wallet, exchange or a fake wallet that he created, it's good that he asked the question and he has the answer. So he'll have to decide whether to move his coins into a none custodial wallet because if it's not your keys it's not your coins. Many newbies have fallen prey to fake wallet scams so there's need to verify that you're downloading an authentic wallet.

That's not true. Many custodial wallets have different methods for their users to log into their accounts and access their funds. Losing your device or having a problem with it wouldn't mean you have lost your coins unless the user also loses access to the method he used to create the account such as an email address or something. If someone has created a wallet account using an email address, they might be able to reset their password using that email address on a new device and get access to their funds.

The popular saying you are referring to is used to say that when you are storing your funds in custodial wallets or other platforms where you are not given access to your seed phrases or private keys, it means that if something goes wrong with the service you are using, you may lose your assets. It doesn't mean that you will lose your assets if you face a problem with your device.

How do you expect anyone to help you if you didn't even wrote the name of the wallet you used?
Not saving seed phrase backup is a big mistake, and it's even bigger mistake if you are using custodial wallet.
Some wallet's don't show seed words during setup but you can show them in menu manually.

If you don’t have seed phrase, you don’t have anything meaning you are not the owner of your coin because it is only with seed phrase or private key you can recover your wallet and the coins you have in there.

Noncustodial wallets are the only wallets that gives security seed phrases, others are centralized wallets, they only allow you to sign in using either mail or so, but once you lose your password, you will not be able to recover your asset with them and if the exchange or wallet get hacked, it will be difficult to recover your money.

Remember this always: Not your keys, not your coin.

I know people have asked already, but sorry, gonna ask again - what wallet was this?  (I noticed you have been active on here lately, but you didnt responded to this thread yet.)

Unless we know the specific wallet, its kinda hard to say for sure what your options are here.  But lets be real - if you lost that seed phrase, things dont look too good as far as getting your coins back.  Im not saying its 100% impossible though and  depending on the situation, you may still have a shot. 

So if you can share a few more details on what happened maybe we can figure something out.

While we are waiting for OP to tell us the name of the crypto wallet he/she is referring to, that didn't allow him/her to view it's seed phrase, I was able to make my own personal research, and I got to discover two wallets, namely "Nami Wallet" which is claim to be non-custodial browser-based wallet extension for Cardano blockchain which is used for sending and receiving of all Cardano tokens and assets, and doesn't allow display of wallet seed phrase, whereas, another wallet that doesn't have seed phrase is "Zengo wallet" which happens to a self custodial crypto wallet which supports Bitcoin and all other coins, such as Ethereum, BNB, & others.

So is any of the two wallets I mentioned the one you were referring to?

The reason is that it is a non-custodial wallet and if it is also a centralized exchange. If there's no seed phrase display then you don't have full control and that's the reason why you should never store your crypto for too long if it's in a centralized exchange and you should not use it if it's a non-custodial wallet. The saying goes with that which is "NOT YOUR KEY NOT YOUR COINS" so better use wallet that display seed phrase and never share it to anyone. Also make a backup of your seed phrase, if you lose it then you cannot recover it. Can you share what wallet is it?.
