Part of the flight went to exchanges. Exchange deposits from small holders with balances below 1 BTC spiked to their highest level since February 6, as some users opted for custodial platforms over new self-custody wallets to quickly secure their funds.
This part of the article caught my attention. Some of the small Bitcoin hodlers had to move their asset to centralized exchanges. This means that because of the Coldcard hacks, this set of people now believes that centralized is safer. Exchanges can also suffer hacks and depositors will lose funds. Maybe they have confidence that they will get a repayment. MtGox (after so many years), FTX, and Binance depositors got their money back when they had issues.

No matter what happens, open-source non-centralised wallets are the best.

What I believe they think is that if a non-centralized hard wallet claimed to be more secure than a centralized wallet got hacked due to vulnerabilities in their system, then there is no point in using them. They believe using a centralized exchange has no risk the way it was being preached against.

Exchanges have also suffered hacks in the past, and most of them have been able to pay back the money that was taken from their custody. Exchanges have tried to build trust with people despite the vulnerability to being hacked easily.

Exchanges or ETF providers do indeed benefit from this, as they appear to be a safe haven for holders to store their assets since they have the liquidity and regulatory framework to compensate users if their platforms are hacked. However, this is misleading, as self-custody remains the best and safest option for holding.. while it won't provide any compensation if you lose your assets, you can at least add a passphrase and multi-signature to prevent your assets from being compromised.

Let me play the devil's advocate here. You're not putting forward any argument.

If it's misleading for exchanges to claim to be a safe haven for hodlers despite their liquidity, regulatory compliance, and ability to compensate customers if the platform's hacked, why?

And isn't it also misleading to generalize that self-custody is the "best and safest option" for hodling when somebody who's keeping his funds on a hardware wallet has lost them while another hodling his on YoBit still has it?

I think there's some confusion towards your answer in his statement, because maybe you are confused with the bolded text he mentioned.

But try to proceed reading because he also said that self custody is the best, which I also agree because. We cannot rely those exchange the safety of out funds, since they are most riskier place or platform to store our wallet.

So yeah hardware wallet is the best if we compare on the exchange you use as example or maybe any other one even if we say they are big or successful now.

Maybe the best for one, not for another? People even forget their 4-digit ATM PIN. They even often forget where they put their car keys, eyeglasses, pens, and whatnot. Is it best for them to be their own bank? I don't think so.

Quite frankly, isn't it better for them to instead own ETFs in registered, regulated, and highly compliant brokers?

Isn't it true that for many it's far riskier for them to act as their own bank because they couldn't even put into practice the motto "don't trust, verify"? Oh yeah, a wallet must be open-source. Would you be able to read the codes, then, and guarantee for yourself that they're free of bugs? Or you're still fully reliant and just blindly trust on what others have to say?

I liked how you put it "they appear to be safe" but in actual sense, they're not. Nothing come close to self custody but only if you can manage it well.

Self custody is a concept and this ColdCard incident should not discredit the whole concept. It doesn't mean the concept is unsafe as we can see the problem was a bad setup. This should open our eyes to become better at practicing self custody.

Not all exchange compensate their customers after hack. They compensate some and ignore some. The Mt. Gox case is still fresh as if it happened yesterday. Not all users get back their funds.

The fear with the various cex is that they suddenly ask for kyc and give little time to adjust or withdraw your funds, if you lose or do not read the message in time, you can find yourself in difficulty

Emphasis on moving your coins out of a CEX. This is not a new conversation yet, alot of persons still ignore it, irrespective of the amount of news about hacks that is circulating on the internet. Most people tend to be slow learner and that is not a good quality for anyone interested in finance or tech business. It would be a very bad experience if people only learn from their mistakes rather than staying sharp and vigilant to learn from the entire ecosystem. Self custody should be an option, it's a must for those who prioritize security.

If we have once experienced a crypto hack or loss of assets massively under a centralized platform, then we will take heat and try as much as possible to avoid anything that has to do with a custodial storage with our assets in cryptocurrency, it take us nothing to make use of a non-custodial wallet than depending on a third party platform with the security and handling over our wallet assets for us.

I used gate exchange two days ago, it has always been my account, I've used it countless times in the past to buy coins and sold, already passed KYC verification but something strange happened yesterday.

I deposit led successfully, meaning they allowed me to log into my account and copy deposit address then the deposit went well but when I was ready to withdraw my money they told me to pass verification again.

Same phone, same location and IP, why the need for verification again? They said for security purposes that if I can't do it they will lock the account, they took it damn serious that I had to comply and was able to withdraw the money.

The amount was much and that shit scared the living hell out of me, I was like if gate wants to turn scam it won't be from my own head, I am not ready for such drama.

This thread might not be up to comprehensive with the negative events of all that had happened so far in the uses of custodial and exchange wallets.
I have also noticed this thread has existed for 2 years now and recently awaken. So I suggest if it would have been consistently been updated maybe recommending it as one thread that discusses about any event about custodial wallets or crypto regulating platforms incidents of users loosing their funds or Privacies in one way or another.

Maybe it would even be so scary reading through the posts with the saddened news. Some tough lessons could also be learnt on the process which should remind users about the risks of using storage system that does not give you the right to control your funds and Privacies.

If at all... Beginners across the stories would have rethink and considers non custodial storage systems safer and healthier than entrusting your Privacies to an authority.

I could call the actions by these investors "situational response" to the hack, people are scared of losing their funds, and in the same vein, they don't even know the kind of wallets the exchanges uses to hold the funds they moved there of which can still be vulnerable. I've noticed this pattern, when exchanges gets hacked, people rush to non-custodial wallets and vice versa. I love self-custody and instead of these people going to CEX and give-up custody, it's better they increase the security of their funds by using strong passphrase with their seeds and moving funds to the upgraded wallet.

Knowledge is everything a person needs to succeed, there is no two ways about it. A person who refuses to learn will always face the consequences for their ignorance, same with ignoring bitcoin security. Many people who preach about self custody do not practice what they teach, some for reasons best known to them and others for diversification.

It's really not about being a slow learner when it comes to finance and tech businesses but the lack of discipline to actually take time to learn and practice what is learnt, that should be the problem.

Am yet to have a self custody wallet but the last I heard about coldcard made me the more scared as to why no wallet,be it self custody or exchange wallet is even the better option. Although self custody wallet still remains assured securely, maybe someone like myself should try to learn how to run a node instead.
I don't even think so far that I can leave my funds on an exchange unless am so vested in trading and want to do a quick trade, otherwise, any good self custody wallet remains better even though I still get scared when I think about it most times.

After reading this thread and many threads included, and you will still feel non custodial wallets are more risky than custodial wallets from centralized exchanges, I can not understand why you thought like this.

Hmmm, I don't want to be controversial here. But I think anyone could believe and do what they want if coldcard could be hacked. It is a wide knowledge and everyone frowns at keeping funds long in exchanges. But to be honest, from 2022 till now, I have kept more than 2k on Binance and actually nothing has happened to it. I am not encouraging anyone to keep funds in Binance, but I think if anything happens, Binance has funds set aside to compensate customers in such a situation.

Meanwhile, self custody is the best, we should endeavour to do it well. But the having some bucks on reputable exchange as Binance is not as much crime as being seen it to be like 6 years.

I have seen Binance caring more than others about protecting their customers post incidents such as hacks, but relying on that is like relying on a stranger to hold your bank notes for you.  They may seem trust worthy, but never exclude the possibility that they will disappear or be robbed and will never give your wallet back again.

There's a caveat to this and it depends per situation and amount of funds of a user that shall be rendered and entrusted to Binance. I think that binance is one of the kind and they have proven their worth and earned the trust of their users. But still, it's not recommended to put everything that we've got there. They might have proven themselves in the past incidents but, no one will know if they'll be able to handle the same situation if it comes to them. Because it's possible that they'll never be stopped as targets from these hackers even with SAFU or proof of reserve. Maybe a modest amount would do.

How many times security incidents like Coldcard happen?
How many times centralized exchanges were hacked, bankrupted or scammed?

After reading this thread and many threads included, and you will still feel non custodial wallets are more risky than custodial wallets from centralized exchanges, I can not understand why you thought like this.

https://www.chainsec.io/exchange-hacks
https://www.cryptowisser.com/exchange-graveyard/

There has been weak entropy bugs in popular wallets before including Trust, Cake Wallet and Blockchain.info. Even the Bybit incident wasn’t a hack of their infrastructure but that of the non-custodial wallet software they were using to sign transactions. I get the point that self-custody should be encouraged but it isn’t a panacea that makes you invulnerable to theft or loss of funds. To me, not having to worry about arbitrary censorship or confiscation is the greater benefit in using self custody.
