Woman Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison After Failed Bitcoin Murder-for-Hire Plot

A woman has been sentenced to over eight years in prison after her murder-for-hire plot using bitcoin fell apart. Melody Sasser attempted to use the dark web to hire a hitman to kill an Alabama resident. She paid nearly $10,000 in cryptocurrency and tried to make the murder look like an accident. Authorities discovered incriminating evidence in her home, leading to her arrest and conviction.

Knoxville Woman Sentenced for Failed Bitcoin-Fueled Murder Plot

The U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) announced on Friday that a woman from Knoxville, Tennessee, was sentenced to over eight years in prison for using bitcoin in a failed murder-for-hire plot. Melody Sasser, 48, was convicted of using cryptocurrency to hire a hitman through the dark web to kill an Alabama resident.

According to court documents, Sasser accessed a site called Online Killers Market, where she provided detailed information about the intended victim, including photos and location data. She requested the murder “seem random or accident” to avoid scrutiny and transferred nearly $10,000 in bitcoin as payment for the crime.

The plot failed, and investigators uncovered evidence during a search of Sasser’s home, which included a journal of communications with the site, references to other hitman websites, and a bitcoin address hidden under cash. The HSI noted:

Sasser was sentenced to 100 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. She has been ordered to pay over $5,000 in restitution to the victim.

This a good move by the authority uncovering such level of crime is quite commendable and fact accumulating at least with proper investigation, there's is more suspects that could be connected to this crime and by bringing everyone involved to book, the police will be saving a lot of people from becoming potential victims.

I wonder why some forks just chooses to use the dark web for illegal deal's knowing fully well that the authorities are always on the lookout for any member of the dark web a d putting their search light on they activities.

8 years in prison is a good enough time for the women to have a reshape thoughts and also coming out better, a lot of dirty deals on the dark web is getting exposed lately a d this shows that dark web is no longer a safe heaven for criminals, and they should start giving up already because on the long run they will get caught up.

15 or 20 years would be much better, especially if she ever gets accepted to be paroled early. She was obviously guilty, and is probably still extremely dangerous, some people never learn and never change. With an 8 year sentence she might be out in as little as ~4 years, and I would not want to live anywhere near her.

Women's Prisons are far better than men's ones usually, but 15-20 years would be a rather harsh punishment IMO. Behind a computer some people don't really realize what they are doing sometimes and the consequences of their actions in real life, since they stay in a virtual world. In addition she seems to be quite naive to trust such services on the dark web, while it's full of scam. You need to be very credulous to send $10000 in Bitcoins for such things before anything has been done tbh. Besides that, I don't think in many states of USA you can easily be released after 4 years for a 8years sentence about such crime.
