So I heard a while back that you don't even need to use ledger live with your nano ledger device and could use electrum with it. When I used electrum, I thought it was good. Then when using a nano ledger, I didn't use electrum much anymore. I used ledger live to send and receive.
Then when ledger recover news came, a lot of people talked against ledger and many people said they were not going to update firmware that include recover even though they won't opt in. I am using a nano ledger s plus and ledger live. However, I have not updated the nano ledger s plus firmware and am using older firmware 1.1.0. I believe firmware 1.1.1 has the recover so I didn't update the firmware. They did another firmware update and now it's 1.1.2. So I am a few firmware versions behind. Lot of people seem to suggest to use another hardware wallet but I like ledger.
My question is, how long can I continue to use nano ledger s plus without updating the firmware? The thing is I haven't done a transaction in a while though. The thing is if I was to do a transaction right now with ledger live, would I get a message of I need to update firmware in order to do a transaction? I assume not yet because my firmware isn't that old? I heard several cases of that with people but I believe that's with the old nano ledger s and they probably didn't update the firmware for 5 years or more maybe? But anyone here of a case where they couldn't send or receive with a nano ledger s plus or the nano x because the firmware is old but not that old? Say a few years behind so say 5 firmware versions behind?
I didn't update ledger live for a while until recently. But that is rarely a big issue right?
Now, would I be able to do a send or receive if I use electrum with my nano ledger s plus? The thing is I still don't want to update the firmware yet. Some people say if you don't update the firmware, then it's safer than if you do. Now if you don't update firmware, you not going to get the security updates which is important right? However, people say even if you update the firmware, then something might happen if a hack comes. Thoughts on that? I would keep electrum updated though.
For someone that does not want to move their coins from ledger, but still want the option to do transactions once in a while, can I not update nano ledger s plus firmware but use electrum and that would work for a while? Or would eventually, I have to update the firmware on the nano ledger s plus?
