It depends a lot on the user, for some it may be advantageous, but for others it may not be... I see three main advantages and disadvantages in freerolls:

In the past I had 1 site that also had poker which provided weekly freerolls for players that achieved a certain amoutn of points in a week. These freerolls were so well paid, if you would see it as a buyin tournament it was easy 150$ and more in buyin because of the high price pool.
In these tournaments there was a high pressure because of the high reward but limited players, so everybody played tight and well to get the limited paid spots.
On the other hand you have the mass freerolls, with thousands of players and maybe 1000$ pricepool. Unless you place in the top 3 you basicall play 3-4 hours of harakiri poker to win 1-20$, not a good hourly wage. 

Around 20 years ago when I started with online poker I played with many clients like bwin, CDpoker, Titan poker and the big ones of course, full tilt, poker stars and party. There were a lot of freerolls and I managed to win several but playing for hours and hours for a small win at some point became boring for me.
Especially the beginning of these tournaments are a battle. People go allin with the worst stuff and if you call you can easily be bad beaten which can be so annoying.
Another problem with freerolls these days is the structure. Often enough it has such a fast bling progression that on the 3rd or 4th level ( approx after 15-20min ) it's no poker anymore and simply allin or fold, which also is no fun if you ask me.

It still helps even if it was freeroll imo. You can start trying for yourself first, what to do or how to handle the situation depending on your cards and the ones on the table. After you're comfortable with that you can start minding how others play, noting them, and understanding/identifying what are the best plays for you to do so that you can win over them. It's free yes so a lot of people just yolo it, but it's still experience since there will be players like that even when money is involved. It's still an experience nonetheless though. I'm not a freeroll poker player. I know that the game is very complicated. Winning can be found in the cards you hold and some of the cards on this table require special tricks to win freeroll poker.
There are advantages and disadvantages that poker provides as intended by OP freeroll free games that gamblers can learn without having to spend capital at the start by looking for experience in playing to collect lots of coins for free. Freerolls still help players try new things in it. If OP has been playing for a long time, you can see how other people play so that you can have fun in freerolls as long as the player is comfortable and there are no serious problems.

People can’t let go of the financial aspect of gambling sometimes which is why they never turn to do free tournaments because there is not much to earn. No one is afraid to play free poker tournaments, those who really like poker generally avoid playing it because it's not poker at all... It's played too aggressively by all participants because the chip stack is small and blinds are raising fast, so basically we are forced to play aggressively whenever we get some nice cards.
