I'm starting to believe that Ethereum could eventually surpass Bitcoin as the top cryptocurrency, especially given its strong ecosystem and the recent reduction in gas fees(Is this a rumour). After exploring Eigenlayer, a restaking protocol that allows Ethereum stakers to restake their ETH or liquid staking tokens (LSTs), it seems to offer new opportunities for increased profits. With the added advantages of smart contracts and DeFi solutions, I expect a potential rally in Ethereum-based projects this month, making it a good time to strategically position myself. https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/eigenlayer/

Eth "surpassing" BTC can have many meanings - cap, adoption, use cases, and so much more. But I don't see it happening, regarding the question.

After some successes that ethereum had in 2021 bull run that many people predicted, it fell more in price during bear market. Bitcoin increased to all-time high this year, but ethereum has continued to struggle and has not gotten there. Also you should not post about something like this when ethereum has continued to be disappointing. This is ETH/BTC 1 day candle sticks chat below. I mean each candle sticks represent 1 day. Green candle sticks means ethereum is rising while red means ethereum is falling. What you should be afraid of is if other altcoins will surpass ethereum. I think altcoins like USDT, Solana and BNB may likely surpass ethereum in marketcap. Those coins are also called ethereum killer coins.

Taking advantage of the novelty to make short-term profits is what one should do, without necessarily thinking that it will surpass Bitcoin.

The innovations opens ways to scam. Anyone can create tokens these days. If comparing any coin with another coin, nothing is used than marketcap. Ethereum had his days and he struggled with the innovations and it tried to over take bitcoin, he only almost get to half of bitcoin dominance, but it has fallen much more because other coins are also competing with ethereum. In innovation, I prefer bitcoin. Ethereum is a centralized coin that is heavily influenced by its developers. Unlike bitcoin that was created by an unknown person or people that other developers are continuing building new things about it. You can see Ordinals which are no fungible tokens, BRC20, Runes and even recently another developer is developing how bitcoin can be staked. But all still considered not part of bitcoin.but which arelike what ethereum developed. I still see no way that ethereum is better in innovation. You can also see the lightning network.

Was ETH created to overthrow BTC or had such a goal in mind over the years? I don't think so It was created for new use-cases surrounding its network with time. Smart contracts, their adoption, L2's here and there, you name it. Everybody chooses for themselves in what to invest, for different reasons, but ETH was created when scams were not as rampant, with a real goal in mind, in my opinion. Sure, it has its problems up till now, but who doesn't?

Not even in the future. Even new projects only imitate Ethereum, while those who say it will precede BTC are like nonsense. Yeah, I remember that word that has been often said during the ICO days. People were too overhyped as well by that thinking but where are they now? the projects that they have thought that will replace BTC has been gone and didn't stand into the market's volatility. There have been many projects like this. But what you are really up to? thinking about ETH surpassing BTC or about this project that you're introducing to everyone?
Maybe even in the future it will be much more than Eigen but still it will not overtake, they assume projects under Ethereum will help overtake it when it is impossible. That's part of the emotion that they are investing to the project. Or maybe he has received so much from the airdrop that it recently has released. When someone is too happy about it, all positive things is what they think about it. That's not a problem though but it's true that it won't overtake it. Too many types of projects that seem to be the same repetitively and solves the same problems that has been solved already in the past by other projects other than ETH.

The overall Sentiment for ETH/BTC has been super bearish for a very long time now. As a matter of fact, I do think without the ETH ETFs approved few months ago, ETH will still be trading below $1.5K. As you can see the chart that @Charles-Tim shared on the thread, eth/btc is looking like a down ONLY chart for now. I think plenty of the criticism has to do with the fact that that the ethereum core team has shifted focus from scaling their L1 and prioritizing make L2s on their chain better (faster transactions at ultra cheap ~$0 01) prices. It created another problem, L2s doesn't remit enough fees for burning ETH (a part of ETH fee is burnt).
Right now, ETH inflation is at least 2x bigger than the burnt fees.

Anything can happen in crypto land, and that includes ETH flipping BTC. If ETH flips BTC, I'd almost guarantee that it would be a very temporary flipping though. ETH simply can't compete with BTC as BTC is in its own category.
It's much more possible that ETH gets surpassed by a different smart contract cryptocurrency.

Gas fees did not reduce as much to the point that it would make so much more sense to switch from bitcoin to ethereum if that is what you are asking. Anyway I do not think ethereum has the momentum to surpass bitcoin especially in the current bull cycle. Even if ethereum peaks, bitcoin will surely peak first which will make it harder for ethereum to catch up. This is not a dig on ethereum I just don’t think bitcoin is easily replaceable. After exploring Eigenlayer, a restaking protocol that allows Ethereum stakers to restake their ETH or liquid staking tokens (LSTs), it seems to offer new opportunities for increased profits. With the added advantages of smart contracts and DeFi solutions, I expect a potential rally in Ethereum-based projects this month, making it a good time to strategically position myself. https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/eigenlayer/Ethereum has good features but again it is more than that. Bitcoin has been here for a long time and it is the one that most people trust. Its etf is successful and we are seeing what seems to be a more positive hike which could lead bitcoin to $70k finally.

Yeah, it's more likely, at least people would believe in it more than in BTC being toppled However, what should happen if the second coin after BTC is surpassed.. Though, we shouldn't judge coins just by cap or "toppling", because all were created for a purpose, if they do fulfill it - then they are good.

Well for me I can not think of a way that does happen. We can just look at the coinmarketcap we will see Bitcoin is more then $1 Trillion. And Ethereum is $298 Billion. I think we will need to see a big failure in the bitcoin blockchain for it to ever fail. And then if it does happen I don't think it will but investors will need to sell their BTC and put all their investment into Eth.

No that's impossible.
From an economic perspective Bitcoin is a currency and has a limited supply that is capped at 21 million with currently 19.7 million BTC in circulation. Ethereum is a fuel for smart contracts with an unlimited supply that has no cap at all and there is currently 120.3 million of it in circulation.
In this sense, ETH is like fiat. It has no cap and is printed non stop which means its inflation ensures its long term dump in value.
From a technical perspective Bitcoin is money and offers a very useful utility that ensures its adoption over the long run. There is no viable competition for bitcoin as a decentralized payment system either. Bitcoin is also secure, without any bugs and has an immutable blockchain. Ethereum on the other hand is a smart contract platform that doesn't have any utility (in the real world). It is only used to create useless tokens. There are lots of competition for it and some of them are serious competitors that are better platforms than ethereum. Additional ethereum is insecure, with lots of bugs and has a mutable blockchain (they can roll it back any time they want) because it is centralized.
To put simply, a shitcoin like ethereum will never be able to even come close to bitcoin let alone surpass it. The only reason it still stays top is because of the hype of the ICO scams that is still alive under different names/disguises and the fact that the 72 million premined coins weren't all dumped. Otherwise if you check its price, it used to be 0.15BTC a couple of years ago but now it is only worth 0.04BTC (-73% dumped) which proves that it has no long term potential as a shitcoin.

Yeah, it's just unlikely to happen, people with BTC have much more skin in the game than into ETH, and something - really - out of the picture should happen to even consider such an event to happen (ETH for some reason being better than BTC in cap / other metrics).

However, what should happen if the second coin after BTC is surpassed.. Though, we shouldn't judge coins just by cap or "toppling", because all were created for a purpose, if they do fulfill it - then they are good.
It means nothing — other than the markets became heavily inefficient for a short timespan. It would take catastrophic issues with Bitcoin for it to be surpassed permanently by a different cryptocurrency.

Since the supply of Ethereum is infinite, Ethereum could overtake Bitcoin in terms of market cap, but that doesn’t mean anything because Bitcoin will maintain an increasing value, high demand and limited supply, which means it is a safer investment than Ethereum.
Although Ethereum could overtake Bitcoin, the possibility of one of the stablecoin pairs like USDT overtaking it remains closer to reality.

No, I don’t think Ethereum will ever take the place of Bitcoin as number one cryptocurrency. You can see how unlikely it is by the lack of interest in Spot ETH ETFs vs Spot Bitcoin ETFs. Everything from the massive supply to the fact that Vitalik owns too much of it makes it certain that it will never surpass Bitcoin. ETH is more likely to be overtaken by Solana than ETH is to beating Bitcoin to the number one spot.
