Do you guys ever heard about the latest in tech-savvy bio-cold wallets to use your iris to unlock wallet? i really need one to give up the long and ugly mnemonic phrase.

Never heard of any of them but you can add it on Electrum like mine I have iris save on my phone to unlock wallets but I think depends on what phone you were using. Mine is s9+ it does have iris scanner built in on the leftside of earpiece.

Or are you talking about a cold wallet that generates a wallet with iris scanner?
Never heard of them and take note mnemonic phrase or seed is mostly supported by all wallet that is the only backup to recover wallet anytime to other wallets and I never heard that there's a iris cold wallet than can recover your wallet by scanning your iris.

What's the advantage of an iris-generated seed compared to existing ones like fingerprint or other biometric seed generator? How would you ensure there's enough entropy and your "seed" is properly secured? Would a simple video/photograph of our eyes generate the same key? I don't think it's worth sacrificing security for convenience in this case. I have a bad experience with biometric-based security so I might be biased, but I'd love to hear an analysis of why it's worth using our iris as a seed to generate a private key. CMIIW.

I do not know much about the hardware wallets that have passkey which could be what that you are referring to. I mean the software wallet that you will use for it will broadcast the transaction with your fingerprint or face scanner on your device. I do not know how this would work but I know that it is possible. I can not use such a wallet that is not secure.

Why would you want to give up ''ugly'' mnemonic phrase?
This Iris is not a cold wallet as far as I know, just another software mobile wallet that needs to have internet connection to work.
Cold wallets should not have connection to internet and other devices.

I remember there was an announcement thread for one of these things a while back, but I'm not going to link it to what I can only assume is a thinly veiled marketing thread Also I believe it was pretty much vaporware at the time the thread was posted.

If that's  a hardware or software wallet you looking for it does not exist iris scanner is just extra security feature on phones to use as alternative for pin/password. I never heard a wallet that generates a wallet with our iris and I don't think even it exist its not safe because anyone can make a copy of your iris by taking a picture.

Seed or Mnemonic phrase should be much safer than generating a wallet with your iris.

Although, the wallets that are using it are likely having seed phrase if you later go to the wallet setting to check for the seed phrase but I am not sure if that is how it is on all wallet that support passkey.

You can create a wallet with biometrics such as iris, fingerprint, etc but it's not possible to create one entirely based on the biometrics alone unless is custodial and someone manages the things for you at the back end by you only see the biometrics to access your wallet.

Consider it's more like an authenticator that just adds another security layer o your wallet but it shouldn't be the only wallet of access/backup for your wallet because remember biometrics are not infallible so even if someone makes it possible to create a wallet only with iris it's not recommended to use.

Never heard of passkey before. By searching it on Google, it pointed me to a passkey website it seems it's a Web3 wallet, and according to them, it doesn't generate a seed phrase, no browser extension, no email verification is required, and any biometrics are supported.

They claimed it is self-custody, but I do not believe it is any safer than using a seed phrase to generate a wallet, and the sad part is that that wallet is currently in demo mode.

Anyway, I tried the wallet it still requires email with no verification, and it only asks for your phone biometrics or pin/password to generate the wallet.

Yeah, the concept of such wallet, namely EyeWallet ^{(hardware, BTW)} really exists and forum has the relevant, dedicated thread opened ^{(as I understood)} by one of its developer. They claim that even people who (like me) wear the contact lenses may use it as those lenses do not effect iris extraction opposite to ordinary glasses the reflective glare from which may have the negative effect. The concept ^{(which is in startup's  development, I think)} is really new thus I would advocate to use such wallet ^{(when it is ready)} for the  small sum until it  gains the full credit.

There are several wallets that have tried to eliminate the concept of mnemonic phrases. There is Tangem wallet, which uses physical cards, and there are also ERC-4337 smart wallets that can use passkeys or other authentication methods to authorize payments.

The concern with trying to eliminate traditional mnemonics is that your authentication method such as your eye can be damaged or you can lose access to a passkey. With smart wallets you can set up different backup methods, but for average users this can be a less user friendly process than writing a mnemonic. Many will just skip adding a backup and end up having a single point of failure.

From a security perspective, these types of wallets can be better because they eliminate the possibility of leaking your seed phrase. There are also drawbacks where you can lose access to your funds if you did not set up proper recovery methods.

As a person who has some relation with medical profession I could  add even more. Access to the iris wallet may be lost due to the health disorders which effect iris. Yeah, there is even branch of medicine called iridology which examines the iris changes and detects relevant decease responsible for such changes. Thus, iris based wallets (^{if any)} have to not eliminate the other options (like SEED phrase, for instance) for their restoration.
