How to recover wallet with seed phrase?

This has to have been covered before, but I can't find a thread.  

I have a Trezor cold wallet, which I've been using for several years.  But its stopped working and seems to be physically broken inside.  I have the seed phrase, so I should be able to recover the bitcoin, but I can't find any directions on how to do that.  I bought a Ledger cold wallet, but when I installed, it created a new seed phrase.  

Can anyone point me to a newbies step-by-step on how to get btc off the Trezor and onto the Ledger?  
Failing that, into my Coinbase account?  
Failing that, do I need to buy a new Trezor?

Any help appreciated!

You should be able to recover your funds in pretty much every wallet out there. Obviously not recommended if you're holding a large amount (which I'm guessing is the case here otherwise you wouldn't be using a hardware wallet).



I'm not that familiar with ledger but i would imagine the wallet gave you the ability to either create a new account/seedphrase or recover one? You should've went with the recovery option. This should help:

What you are trying to do is referred to as sweeping funds. To do that first you have to set up your new ledger wallet by accessing the wallet via your seed phrase. After that you can access the funds in your old trezor wallet by accessing the wallet via the seed phrase on any safe wallet software. I will recommend you do that with an open source wallet software and a secure internet connection.

Put in your old wallet seed in the software wallet preferably ELECTRUM and then send the funds from there to the new wallet via the address you copied As long you are successfully in you new wallet, make sure to get your correct wallet address and make sure your internet connection is safe also.

I think he may want to import the seed phrase instead but I think following Mia Chloe sweeping advice would be good. Which means you will need to move the coins on the address of the seed phrase that is generated on Ledger.

Although, I do not trust Ledger because the seed phrase generation is on a close source secure element. You can use any other BIP 39 hardware wallet (or any online BIP39 wallet but an online wallet is not recommended) to have access to your coins.

I wouldn't recommend using ledger because of certain issues pertaining to it and it not been really open sourced but stated otherwise.

Open ledger live app on your system
Choose option to recover existing wallet and enter your seedphrase.

There is no need to stress yourself hashing the private key if you have the seed phrase (besides wallet do that automatically as long as the seed checksum is right) infact on a solid basis, the seed phrase is mostly important because it's there the master private key gets hashed from and subsequently the child keys which are in turn hashed from the master private key. People prefer to work with seed phrase because they are like a compressed form of the master private key and child keys and are easier to work with and also store. Not all wallets work with private keys but all work with seed phrases.

I'll prefer you get a new Trezor hardware wallet if you can. That's because ledger for so many reasons can't be used as a trusted hardware wallet any more as they no longer have that only feature that makes a wallet to be called a hardware wallet and that's ''storing your keys offline''. They now support cloud recovery..

But then if you don't want to bother about buying a new hardware wallet, you can just create a cold storage using electrum as suggested by other users... You might also want to check this link to see how to set it up using an offline device..  the procedures are self explanatory so just try to follow..

Just make sure you keep your seedphrase offline and don't go about putting it in just any software wallet and also make sure to use standard open source wallets like electrum and offline..

Never seen it happened where a wallet would reject a wallet account with the correct seed phrase for recovering access and instead it's referring you to create a new account.
I think you either did the wrong operation with the newly bought ledger wallet.
You can as well try to do factory resetting of the ledger wallet and try again and make sure you're calm doing it so that you can give it a better input.

This is the best way to solve this.

Reser ledger and enter the seed in the device. You don't even need ledger live. Just install electrum and the right derivation path to see your coins.

That’s not what happened. The hardware wallet didn’t reject the seed or anything like that. He just chose the option to create a new wallet instead of restoring an old one.

This is indeed the right thing to do as bitmover said but only if you are 100% certain your old seed is still secure and there is no chance it would’ve been compromized. If in doubt, better create a new wallet then send all your coins to it.

Your issue is because you didn't know importance of this step or ignored it in the past.

Bitcoin was never in Trezor wallet, this device was just used for signing transactions.
Coins are on blockchain, and with seed words you can recover to any supported wallet.
I would stay away from ledger and other closed source wallets.

Impossible to do, and it's terrible idea to keep any coins on centralized exchange and give them custody of your coins.

You didn't explain what happened with old Trezor, but new model Safe 3 has ok price.
There are other open source hardware wallets allternatives, Keystone, Bitbox02, Passport, Satochip, etc.

Good to hear that your problem is solved, however you can also easily import your seed phrase in Electrum wallet and that way you can also access your Bitcoin without any issues. Since your issue is solved and that's why no such step is needed, and to do good for others I suggest you to lock this thread.

If you have a seed phrase keep it intact you don't need to create another account, what you need to do is to import the wallet, through  the seed phrase, many of us has lost our coins because of misunderstanding seed phrase, including me, I do trade and I have different wallet and different seed phrase, theirs a day I was in hurry and I decided to import one of my wallet through another system whereas all the seed phrase were with me, so it took me time to figure out the seed phrase of each because the seeds phrase of those wallet is from same domination,I have not used ledger, but I know that once you have your seed phrase intact and you want to import it, it will not redirect you to create new account.

Yes, you're on point, when I imported my address I made it very clear and understanding, I made it known to anyone under me, that  if someone is import its wallet, for making your coins to protect your coin you have to transfer all the coins to the imported wallet, I have not make such mistake, because I feel that the wallet I imported is no longer safe for me to use, so I don't make such mistakes with me, this advice should go directly to people who import their wallet and still make use of same wallet, I think people that have not imported wallet before when they come across this thread they will comprehend more of advantages and disadvantages of importing wallet, because some have not know the implications and implications of not storing or saving their seed phrase.

You are giving very bad advice, because what is the point of having a hardware wallet, if at some point you will endanger everything by entering the generated seed into a desktop/mobile hot wallet? You will only do this if you do not have any other recovery option, and then you will be very careful to make sure that you have a device that is not infected with malware, then you will download the installation file of that wallet and verify the file before starting the installation.

Even with all of the above, it can always happen that you don't notice that you have a well-disguised keylogger waiting for you to type in some confidential information, and then unfortunately it's game over.
