Is this noise level for the Antminer S1 normal? [SOLVED]

Sounds like your fan is at max RPM, could be a faulty fan and/or controller! But it will never be quiet as stated on the hp, it needs its own room!

If I go into my Antminer's status screen, under Status, and Miner status, it says that the RPM of my fan is 15120. The temperature of both blades is at 35. I would be really curious to know the speed of the fan from other users on this forum.

This is nuts. I'm supposed to sleep in the next room. If I can't find a solution for this I'll have to turn it off at night and that'll just kill my possible ROI.

Depends on the temperature in the room, clockfrequency etc. But mine has never gone above 3000 RPM, even when running at 400MHz!

Ok, so at 40c fan spins about 2700rpm.
This might be temp sensor or fan speed controler.
If you want to slow it down as far as i remember put 47ohm resistor in to red wire.this will cut 12v in half.

Just measure voltage on wires and a bit of soldering and job done.

Thank you very much for the response!   Yours sound kinda loud too but not quite as loud as mine. I sent an e-mail to Bitmain. I don't really expect an answer but it's worth a shot.

I tried doing the master reset thing. When I pressed the button, the lights on both blades stopped blinking (no longer mining) but the fan never stopped. I had to re-enter all my miner config info, which confirmed that the master reset happened, but yeah the fan never got slower. I tried unplugging all the power cables and replugging them. No difference. I also tried unplugging the fan wire and replugging it. Nothing either. Anyway, thanks for the help man. I'll go through the entire menu. Maybe there's something that controls the fan in there.

Something is either wrong with the fan controller or the RPM wire is loose (so it's defaulting to full speed).  The S1's are almost dead quiet when they're cold, but the fan will ramp up a little as they warm up.

and just be done with it.... I dunno, warranty replacements on miners, as you know, basically makes your purchase shite.   so many times its just "dear god i hope this doesn't break" and if it does, hoping one of the nerds on here has enough know-how to help you fix it.

Antminer's fan should not go full tilt after restart. It is almost completely silent for a few seconds, then accelerates to less than 2900 rpm (2200-2600 rpm is more like it). Make sure that it is connected properly to four pins. It could be a rare case of a faulty fan in your machine. Sorry for your trouble.

I thought the start of the vid was demostrating the noise, I was thinking thats just fine and you cant sleep      But yes thats like a hoover, not quite as bad as a delta / jet turbine fan I have a couple of but about as bad as it gets, 60db ? and imo 30db is comfortable.    If your room was over 30c then its going to be loud as hot air is less dense, etc

Thats not it then because its full revs as soon as he turns it on.    Air temp to solid transfer would take some time at least and its not hot while turned off, only if presuming the heatsink is not properly seated and I wont say that


Its the fan wire most probably.   Theres power and there is one wire for measuring rpm of the fan.    If it cant read that, it'll max the volts to max the rpm (as failsafe).      So very cheapest fix is to replace the wire or at least plug in another fan perhaps

I'll try replacing the fan. If that doesn't work I don't know what I'll do. Maybe turn it off at night.

I tried using one of my PC case's fans but it didn't fit. It's weird. The fan from my PC case has a 4 pin connector but it's a different 4 pin connector. Maybe because the one from the Antminer is a higher powered fan? I'll try to go at my local computer store and see if they have that model of fans.

If you bought it from Bitmaintech then e-mail info@bitmaintech and tell them about your problem.  They will probably suggest that you ship it to their location and they will replace it for you.  I contacted them because one of the units stopped hashing and ethernet port died for some reason but after a reset and leaving it off for a few minutes and turning it back on, it started working again.

me too though good equipment helps.   replacing a wire shouldnt involve anything hot, often its just a case of twist something into shape or yanking it out, a pair of pliers works.    So if the wire is soldered in place, you could snip it half way and just twist on a new piece as its only low amps I dont see its a big deal.
   Depends how desperate you are,  that is a caustic noise really.   Stick it in the cupboard or a box with tubes in and out it'll probably be fine at that max speed

Ok maybe i went to far with this soldering.
Try this simple thing-cut red wire and put 47ohm resistor from one end to other end of red wire.
Once this is done max voltage on fan will be cut at least in 1/3 so this will slow down this fan and will make it more quiet.
But there is down side of it- if miner will got hot fun will not speed up to cool it.


I will make few photos and will show you how easy it is.

replacing a fun will not help as probably :
a. controller is fucked and gives order to full speed for fun-so dosnt matter what fun you will use it will spin full speed.
Try to connect to other blade same fun and see if this will help. Maybe just simply changing blade will help.

Its possible to get a fan with a thermistor on it.   So if it were a fault with the hardware logic just add on one of these instead.    It'll take the same power supply but control its own speed.

I have one not that expensive, just has a simple flat sensor coming off which I place anywhere I like and it'll adjust the fans wattage.   Obviously it goes to max revs on 80c and is noisy then

The reason I wanted to try to change the fan was that I thought maybe one of the wires is defective and, as STT mentionned, "theres power and there is one wire for measuring rpm of the fan.    If it cant read that, it'll max the volts to max the rpm (as failsafe)." So I was thinking changing the fan for a similar one was worth a shot.

The other idea I had was to basically go for a weaker fan. The one that came with the antminer is 12V, 1 amp. And it's pretty noisy at max power. I tried one of my PC case's fan and this one is 12V and 0.16amp. It is dead silent, but it is also so weak that I wouldn't want to risk using it on the antminer and having it overheat and possibly bricking the unit for good. So I was thinking about a fan that was maybe 0.3 or 0.4 amp. Do those even exist? Running at full power it probably wouldn't be too noisy and it would get the job done until the day I retire my antminer for good.

Trying to plug the fan on the other fan connector is a GREAT idea. The problem is that the wire is too short. But it's still worth a shot. I'll unscrew the fan tomorrow and place it on the other side to try it. If the fan runs normally then my problem will be solved. I'll just connect the fan on the other side of the unit for good. If the fan still runs at maximum then the problem is clearly the fan so I'll just get a new one. I could also try s1lverbox 's solution. My time during the day is limited but I will try to make time for this tomorrow.

So... Defective controller? I don't much care. Now this thing can run 24/7 and I can sleep at night.
