Last night, I got into an argument with a friend. The place where we currently stay has certain issues - the landlord has problems settling the NEPA agency bills, the soakaway is leaking, and the house rent has been increased by an additional hundred thousand as of next year.

When they brought light, our place was the only one without electricity, while the neighbours had power. This really infuriated me, so I expressed my frustration, I said " I wonder why somebody would want to stay here next year, instead of look for somewhere else.

My friend replied, "Look for where? Is there a better place? Every other place has its own issues, so why take the time and stress to search for somewhere else and start over? Is it not better to stay here?"

I didn't expect that kind of response, so I asked if my friend was implying that this place - where we're using our personal money to fuel generators that cause noise and pollution, and dealing with water pump repairs and darkness while others have light - is acceptable.

My friend said, "That's how Nigeria is. If you move from here to another place, which one is better? Plus, consider the stress and everything." I countered saying that just because we don't know if we'll find somewhere better doesn't mean we should stay in a place that's financially draining and stressful.

My plight is, Nigerians often adapt to difficult situations, but that doesn't mean we should normalize them. We just know how to make an excuse, or find little consolation in the situation and continue managing.

Do we need to start changing our mindset before demanding better from the government? Our opinions just didn't align.

What do you think about this situation?

You are right, infact this is one major problem that has impeded our development because we don't even seek for any where or anything better, the landlords take us for granted because we don't even know of our rights as tenants.
This attitude has made us not to be taken seriously by the government too.

Assuming we express great displeasure from within us as a population, Nigeria would would have been a lot better than this in the sense that the "Leaders" will even be scared of trampling on our rights as citizens because they will be scared of our reactions.

Nigerians as a people in my opinion suffer from Stockholm syndrome. We are in love with our oppressors, we make excuses for them. We grumble under our breathe about the discomfort we feel but are too much of a coward to do anything about it. We would rather adjust to whatever hardship comes our way. We turn to jokes and humour as a coping mechanism. We turn our misery into jokes. Someone once said that evil politicians struck gold with Nigerians.
We don't revolt
We don't demand good governance
We defend evil politicians
We make ourselves available to be used a thugs during elections
This mediocrity knows no academic lines, we have scholars defending illegality. Defending the common wealth of the nation being stolen right before our eyes just for peanuts.

No matter how hard Nigeria gets
The masses will endure and defend their leaders
They would rather fight amongst themselves through tribal wars and bigotry

It is in my opinion that Nigerians are cowards and weaklings and that this nation will not get better unless we can somehow by some miracle find out strength. I wouldn't hold my breath though.

My plight is, Nigerians often adapt to difficult situations, but that doesn't mean we should normalize them. We just know how to make an excuse, or find little consolation in the situation and continue managing.

the thing be say we no really get choice like that when you look at our situation and when you consider the alternative when de available, you go just kuku de your de because when you de reason to run from one compound, you fit even go run enter the one when worse pass the one when you already de inside. house issues no be small matter for this our country and a lot of people get tales to share regarding the experience's they have had while staying in most rented apartment. sometimes, you might be unlucky to find yourself in a place where you wont be seeing light for more than six months and there is going to be nothing you can actually do about it.

normally when you adapt too much, you go take a lot of nonsense from people and systems and this one follow for the reason when make am be like like say regardless of the tough government policies when we de under, we de still find way to cope with am and the politicians on there part know say we de good at adapting to things na why them no de fear to make any decision when them wan make. places when we de normally pay 100 naira for transport go all of a sudden change am to something that's at 300 naira and we go only complain for few days after which we become used to it.

Honestly speaking Nigerians adapts so quick to hardship even when we are suffering and facing so many economic challenges, you won't see us fight nor protest, all we do is to face any situation we found ourselves, even when the government removed fuel subsidy and the prices of fuel was hike nobody really cares about it, we just want to survive and Carter for our families and love ones. There are no jobs or empower schemes yet Nigerians are still surviving and adapting, no good access roads, no social amenities, insecurities here and there still Nigerians are not shakened by it, we just look for what to do to survive matter the weather.

I admire the courage of all Nigerians so far, the Youths are no longer looking unto the government for white collar job, they just learn one skill or the other so they can survive, we are tired of complaining without any effective change from the government so the masses just have to move on and adapt to the system just to survive.

Ability to adapt to any situation is one of the characteristics of humans and to archive it one must be willing to adjust our thought and actions towards any  circumstances. The rate of hardship in Nigeria has gone beyond control that citizens have been faced with know option than to make any situation there bed of roses, ability to Adapt to hardship is one quality that differentiate Nigerians from other countries.
Nigeria's economic system have been destroyed by political interference, myopic  reasoning and corruption, making things difficult for citizens of one of the best country in mineral resources which the political representatives needs to be scrutinised conspicuously to make Nigeria a better place.

Its really sad to see that people adapt to things that brings them suffering.
Yes, everybody is entitled to their choices but not to the extent of their detriment. Why choose to suffer because you can't go through the stress of searching for a better job or better accommodations.
Just hearing people saying things like "dirty no dey kill africa man" it's like a cut to my skin. Nigerians adapting to dirts. It's really very sad. We should come out of that illusion.

Make e be say nah because nah for Naija this gbese dey often happen if not humans in general like to adapt. This issue of light wahala don cause so many katakata especially between landlord and tenants and make I no lie you op, e get some co-tenants you go get, their own lifestyle go be like say make you cry because if you be the type wey no dey tolerate rubbish, you go get person wey be "I don't care" kind of individual and if you come dey always ginger for the place, e go come look like say nah o my you like problem pass meanwhile nah you dey fight for the betterment of the yard.
Some landlords supposed dey prison because of the breach of agreements wey dem dey usually get with their tenants but because of this "make I manage am" mentality wey some naija tenants dey get nah dey make them feel less concerned.
Yes, the housing situation for Nigeria as it concern those wey dey pay rents no be easy one oh. These days to find better place for especially Port Harcourt wey price no go cut your head and the landlord or lady no get one comma nah by connection oh.
The only thing I go talk nah say, no be like say your friend dey nonchalant, e fit be say him don decide say him go make do with the scant resources because to am, the next place fit worse pass this one.

What do you think about this situation?

I know for sure that Nigerians are the strongest people that I have seen adapt so easily to bad government and since the politicians know that we move on  from our plague easily, so they keep on treating us badly. They never take accountability for all the poor governance.

I admire our courage of moving on and endearing whatever the government throws at us, even though we want to protest for the betterment for good governance, some individuals will still go back to collect small peanuts as bribe form the same people that is inflicting hunger and starvation for the people.

During the tenure of His Excellency late Buhari, Nigeria faced so much hunger, killings, starvation and insurgency every corner of the country and the Youths vow to make changes during the next election, but today what do we have?, the worst of what we experienced.

We don't have to change our mind before change comes because change was supposed to come naturally from those ruling us as it is their primary responsibility to fix the country.
