G'Day Guy's,
Well my first foray into crypto mining was with easy miner and I just used that $15 computer I got at auction, well after 4 days win10 decided it needed the CPU back and that was the end of that. So I went and got a antminerS9 and just need to resolve the wifi in my shed so I can get it going.

As I do live off the grid power isn't a issue and for the net I do have starlink so those issues are out of the way.

So if you guy's could please give me a run down on what I need to do to get mining, I do know I will need a wallet so advise on that issue then creating a user name then setting it all up with the antminer.

I'm sure more question will arise now I just want to get started.

Regards Bryan

It's great to hear you venturing into mining but last I heard it ain't quite profitable in the short term due to energy and cost requirement
But with Bitcoin at current price, maybe it would.

Well I would advice joining a Mining pool because solo mining using S9 isn't feasible.
There are reputable mining pool at there
And a wallet you can try Electrum or Bluewallet.
These are all mentioned assuming you planning on mining Bitcoin.
I'm not a miner so my knowledge is hearsay
But I can tag a miner for you @philipma1957 hopefully he uses our telegram notifier.

Or you can move the thread to the mining board since you plan on asking further questions.
To move
Go to the left bottom corner
You would see the option there.

So I went and got a antminerS9 and just need to resolve the wifi in my shed so I can get it going.

AntMiner S9 is very old ASIC. Looking at https://www.asicminervalue.com/miners/bitmain/antminer-s9-14th, you'll suffer losses unless your electricity price is $0.029/kWh or lower. But that website doesn't include fee (such as pool fee, Bitcoin TX fee and exchange fee).

As I do live off the grid power isn't a issue and for the net I do have starlink so those issues are out of the way.

1. What exactly do you mean by power isn't a issue? Very cheap electricity?
2. AFAIK Starlink internet connection have somewhat high latency, which may increase rate of rejected shares.

I don't think on grid with home setup solar will help you reduce your Electricity consumption running s9 miner. Unless your solar panels can harvest of around 50kW in day light.
If your on grid solar can't provide that then it will use the paid power source.

About the WiFi issue the best solution for that is to buy WiFi extender and connect your unit with Ethernet cable from extender.

BTC is still bearish at the moment, but it is getting weak. The market might shift while the RSI is making a reversal pattern.

To get more advantage analyzing the market, why not try to subscribe to TradingView and unlock the $15 reward from your first subscription?

Thanks for the replies Guy's,

Now just to clear up the power, I have lived off the grid for over 20 years and I use a forklift traction battery as the main storage for power, now I have enough solar on my shed array where the batteries are on float by lunchtime so the power issue isn't really an issue.

With Starlink the latency is around 30m/sec or less and using the starlink app on my phone I do have 6M/b at the shed door on wifi, today hopefully I'll get this UBI loco 5 wifi router sorted so the wifi will working.

I do still have alot to learn about this crypto mining and I am taking my time soaking everything in as I do want to hit the ground running where once it's all setup it can go on working in the background 24/7 and I can check on it every now and then to see how it's going.

Well spent today getting the Loco5 router sorted and after a few trips up and down from the shed to the house to get the router setup finally got it sorted, when I connected the ethernet to my win10 laptop straightaway had the net so just had to do a speedtest.

ping 44ms
download 55.15Mbps
upload 33Mbps

So I reckon that is enough bandwidth for the S9 so now thats out of the way I can now move forward.

Now if I have this right first step is getting a wallet, second step is joining a mining pool and linking it to the wallet and the final step start mining.
For now I will go with bitcoin to cut my teeth and see how much this ol' S9 can make in a day.

The bandwidth is more than enough to perform mining. But you might want to check ping to mining pool you choose since speedtest website usually choose nearest server, while mining pool server could be more far.

First of all you are welcome to the mining rig if really you are one though I am not. But using $15 to acquired a computer from mining brought two things to mind. A computer of $15 can't be used to mine bitcoin because the capacity will not be enough to mine bitcoin and it would be a very small system. Because the least computer price my area is $60 and that is a small system.
And also antminerS9 is an old mining system, but if you are making profit from it then you can continue buy if it is not then you can go for the new mining devices.

I hope you didn't have to pay too much for this old device. It will consume roughly 1.4kW/h, so to run it 24/7 your off-grid solar needs to have ~34kWh in abundance to your normal needs. Neglecting any tear and wear of your solar/battery system and setting the energy costs of your S9 to zero, it can make something in the ballpark of 806sats per day (neglecting mining and transaction fees atm), that's roughly $0.81 per day (as of now).

This is idealistic calculation based on current network hashrate of ~803EH/s and I'm assuming the energy for your S9 is for free, no pool mining fees and no withdrawal and transaction fees, your S9 runs 24/7/365. The network hashrate will not stay constant at that level, it will grow slowly as it did for almost all the time. This means your tiny slice of the cake will shrink when network hashrate grows.

Well guy's I'm still having fun getting connected and the main sticking point is getting a wallet to hook up with the S9

Every step has failed with F2pool and this morning tried with Pepe so I am at a loss on getting started so any assistance will be great.

Now I do know this is an old miner and I did pay $350 to get it not knowing just how old it was. But eh 0.81 a day is a starting point for me and the only down side will be the noise but as I will be working I won't even notice it.

I'm not very well versed with Bitcoin mining with an ASIC like the Antminer S9. I would think you create accounts on the mining pools you're going to use. Then in your pool's account you'll likely find information how to connect your miner or mining software (it should be something like a so-called stratum address). The pool gives you a stratum address where the miner or mining software that utilizes your S9 gets its work jobs and reports hash work back to the pool.

You will need a Bitcoin wallet from which you take a receiving address for your payouts. Anywhere in your pool account, your miner or your mining software this public address needs to be setup. (When I was mining with graphic cards in 2011 the mining pool used the receiving Bitcoin address as account name with an arbitrarily chosen "password", the password wasn't important, an so the pool knew what coins to account for which worker.)

You might want to hop to the Mining board and read around there. You'll likely get better answers there than here in the Beginners section.

There are reputable mining pool at there
Solo mining pool that is famous is Solo CK mining pool.
NERDMINER: Bitcoin lottery miners

There is a comparison between S9 and NerdMiner, that can help you to do solo mining or forget it.

Solo mining is not really what OP is looking for, so I'm not sure why it's suggested. Chances to mine a block at current difficulty with a S9 is mathematically non-zero but pretty much close to zero. And the Nerdminer is merely just a toy with orders of magnitude closer to zero chances compared to a S9. If users have fun with it and learn something, it serves its purpose.
