Gambling and Aging Population

I'm writing this thread because the last time that I went to a land base casinos, I have seen a lot of senior citizens and older people who are still playing. But the thing is that some of them really are in the wheelchair and with someone with them helping to push the button in let's say slot machine games.

What do you think could be the reasons that they are still gambling though?

It could be that they want to still engage themselves and be as active as they can and they can do it through gambling? Or somewhat of a mind exercise for them?

What I notice also is that most of this seniors could really be rich as they have a lot of people behind them, some could be their grand kids or some could be their maids. Or it could be better if they will just go and stay at home as they could be vulnerable in such places?

About elderly gamblers or gamblers in wheelchair I can say that one of the reasons why they gamble is that they got stuck in one time, one era. They feel themselves comfortable when they were young, lets say in 70-80s, and they dont want to change that feeling. Back in past, the variety of entertainment wasnt as big as now. Part of those elder gamblers are the similar category of people, who dont like to adopt to digital world, prefer old button mobile phones over modern smartphones, dont understand streaming services, the internet in general.

But on the other hand, what kind of entertainment is available for seniors today? They are not suited for something active, "digital things" are not for them, travelling might be complicated. What else could the do? They can't go play paintball, kart racing or surfing for example. They rarely go to cinemas either. Playing bingo and solving puzzles becomes boring also. Gambling is solution from boredom for them in some way.

What I have noticed with aged gamblers is that, they do it for Fun, older people tend to get lonely sometimes and in such a moment they can engage in activities that they are used to, for some reason many of them choose gambling as relaxation and engaging in the mental process make them go to casino houses where they can engage the minds regardless of the physical conditions, those older retired citizens are the one's gambling for fun in the real sense of it.

What do you think could be the reasons that they are still gambling though?

When you are old and have enough money that you can't spend. then you can only do what makes you happy. maybe that's what the elderly feel when they come to land-based casinos even though they may be physically limited.
It is very possible that we will continue our gambling habits in old age. Especially when there are not many things we can do to be busy with work. Or if we want to stop gambling, we can do it when we have limitations that we can no longer overcome such as fitness and health.

Most likely these senior citizens you saw were seasoned gamblers already.

I believe they are gamblers from when they were young and just can’t shake off the habit of going to a casino and playing. I don’t see anything wrong since it seems like they are just playing for fun anyway and they are accompanied by many people who could assist them if something were to happen immediately. Gambling has no age (except for minors) and you could play it all throughout your adulthood up to retirement age even. It’s entertaining after all.

Those aged people you see like that might have been very active in gambling when they were still young. Now that they are retired and have not much to do with their time, some of them find peace spending time in the casino. Even if they get support doing what they love doing, they still will be deriving that same fun that took them to that place; they have the money to finance it, so there could be little to worry about, as the majority of them will be gambling only for fun and not the expected profit.

Having fun should not be about someone being able to walk only. People on wheelchair can be able to gamble using their phone or computer to enjoy gambling. So because they are not able to work, that does not mean they are not able to gamble. They have healthy brain and mind which is enough for them to think approximately without walking. Gambling is not about walking.

They... have a lot of free time? And probably money as well. That's literally it. Anything else is just your mind doing jumping gymnastics over common sense lol. You think people gamble for some deep reason? Nah. I gamble personally cause its fun. And I can win money off of it. That's pretty much the general thing most gamblers have as a reason. Anything else is just an extreme of these two or well, again, overthinking the reason.

Now personally I've never seen rich RICH people, but I've known a few families out there who gamble with their grand parents, so I reckon it isn't that weird for your sample to be an instance of that. As for what's better, dunno. Not a doctor.

At my old age, I will still do whatever still excites me and makes me alive; I cannot imagine myself sitting the whole day in a garden and just reminiscing about the old days. Age is just a number until you can still think and move your hands. You should do what you love to do; inactivity will cause your body to degrade.
There is no retirement in gambling as long as you still enjoy doing this, you have the money, and you play within your means.

People who are aged and can't get around on their own should prolly be gambling at home and not too often in a local betting shop. Gambling does not really have anything to do with age, as long as your cognitive ability is still fine and you feel like gambling, you should do it.

That said, it is crucial to talk about how important it is to gamble responsibly when you are older, when younger you can rise again if you lose your money and go broke, but when older, it becomes more difficult, so if you don't want to be an old, broke and hungry old man, gamble responsibly.

The only thing I can see is that they are probably enjoying themselves.  Casino is one way to enjoy an elders time. I often goes to Solaire (Philippines Branch Casino) and often see elderly people playing on slots and even poker. Yeah it could also served as mind exercise to them, plus majority of them are rich people who just want to spend their money and time on that front.

There's no specific reason why people gamble other than seeking pleasure or seeking a living, if it is talking about the elderly, then the reason should be seeking pleasure in their old age. There's no way they are seeking a living while they are theoretically going to die soon hahaha. Besides, why don't you just ask the person directly, it will surely make for an interesting discussion between the two of you.

Often in movies I see grannies spinning slots in casinos. It's their favorite game. It's rare when elderly people stand at the roulette or Black Jack. But sometimes I see middle-aged people in casinos. And as a rule, these are those who own their own businesses. It's strange, but it's true. I am categorically against elderly people playing in casinos, because pensions in most countries are small and it's hard for old people to live on them. I understand that in the US this is most likely not a problem, because as we can judge from the news, elderly people there have such incomes in old age that they can travel.

We all know gambling is not about walking,but that's not what the Op meant.If you read what he wrote properly,you will notice that 'elderly ones' appeared more in the thread.In other words,older ones prefer physical casinos over online casinos because alot of older ones are not exposed to online casinos.Also, people on wheelchair are aware of online casinos but they prefer physical casinos because that's the type of fun they want,in physical casinos people get to meet with each other face-to-face and chat with them,it could be their old time friends.

There is no age restriction in gambling; they can play as long as they like, even if they have an assistant. Old people are already settled; they do it for the fun of it.
The worst that can happen to them is to think that they are useless and cannot do what they love doing. Just check the cockpit area, and you will see old people in wheelchairs still loving the atmosphere; it reminds them of old days when they were at their peak cheering, so let them enjoy the things that they love doing while they can; this is the time that they enjoy it the most.

People like to have fun, so why not have fun when you're old also?

I know people that never gambled in their life that ant to go and have a try in Las Vegas if they would ever have the chance for it, people that gambled during their middle age would still like to gamble even if they are old, they have a ton of free time and if they have the money , why not?
What would you recommend to a guy in his 80s to do, invest in Bitcoin and get rich in 10 years??

I noticed the same thing when I once visited a casino in one of the well-known malls here in our area. I think most seniors gamble because of the entertainment and social connection it offers. It provides an environment where they can engage with others even if their mobility is limited. Perhaps it’s not really about gambling but about staying mentally stimulated and maintaining some sense of independence or routine. For others it’s just a simple familiar habit that brings them joy regardless of their financial background. I also believe that as long as they are accompanied by someone they trust it’s a positive way for them to remain active.

Perhaps some of them are addict while some are just doing it for fun and some are doing it reason because they might have been away from it for sometime or some years. just like my place we have this culture that we dance masquarrade and do some other activities every August and December and this culture started very long ago and there are age people i mean old men that can not actually dance like they use to dance before but each time they heard the drum been played they will definitely start shaking their head wherever they are and some will slowly walk down to the play ground where they are playing the drum and some do actually dance while some will just come and sit down and be shaking head because they have missed doing it.

They just like the process of gambling and have lots of time. And the young ones always has no time for visiting offline casino for the game - they prefer online casinos. In nowadays reality the offline casino may be used with old ones for everyday gambling and with groups of young gamblers like rare event. Or may be some tournament.
Just the old ones has enough time to spend several hours per day in casino.

I do not understand this. People on wheel chair may see physical casinos more stressful than people are are walking normally. Some of them may even because of their disability prefer online casinos.
