Learning new languages is a great way to train your brain and improve understanding. The availability of language learning apps like Duolingo has made learning new languages fun and easy.

What languages do you currently speak and/or studying?

Feel free to share any language learning tips or resources that you find useful.

duolingo is fun and makes it extremely easy to be consistent and keep track of your progress but i have never heard anyone say they became fluent with a language because of duolingo

I agree Apps are not necessarily enough to become fluent, but it is enough to get started. After you get the basics down, watching tv shows, reading books and real world conversations will get you to the next level.

Duolingo is a great way to begin with and learn the basics. BUT, after, you will feel that strange sentences, you will never use in real life.

So, yes. It's a great way to learn the alphabet (I learned Hindi this way), after that, you need to look for easy books, cartoons maybe? Now, I try to make myself read daily news in Hindi and translate the unknown words.

Yes, I've looked at Duolingo - different languages have very different teaching goals.

e.g. English, German and French base the lessons around the CEFR scoring system whereas Polish, Italian and Czech do not

English, German and French start you ordering in a cafe regardless of your learning level whereas Polish, Italian and Czech start with the very basics - ball, cat, house, family member.  Then build from there ... Dad is at home; she has the ball; where is the cat?)

The online communities discussing Duolingo give differing details around updates to the APP while their own website is similarly coy.

Having an e.g. English to German dictionary is good.  Pair it with a news service on WhatsApp in the language you are studying will throw modern words at you which you can either guess, or, look up (plus given they are topical, you can get a sense of what is being spoken about).

There are numerous threads here in the Forum you can join to practice speaking a your desired language.

I recently learned python and javascript - I can read/write but cannot speak well yet.

Language is the key to all forms of communication.  There is nothing more romantic than sitting in a hot tub under a full moon getting sweet sweet CSS whispered in your ear.  Smiley

Language is a very important factor which aids communication and build relationships between people. Therfore the ability for an individual to go into the field of learning different languages gives that individual an edge over others like:
1. Enhancing cultural understanding and career opportunities
2. Improves cognitive skills and global communications
3. Expands networking and access to information 👌 etc....

I'm learning German at the moment, since I've moved to Germany. But I don't think all those multiple apps can be the main source for learning languages. You can learn just certain words/phrases through them. But grammar, articles, genders, etc, and how it all goes together, they can hardly help here. Having a teacher is the best option. I'm a former EFL teacher, so I'm talking from experience. Apps can be used as an additional tool.
