Testing Seed Phrase?

Hey Ya'll,
I'm new to this forum. I have a Trezor One cold wallet. I've started putting some BTC in it. It seems to be working fine. I've moved small amounts in and out with no issues, however I've never tested the seed phrase. Before I get too much BTC piled up in there it seems wise to make sure the seed phrase works. What are the ramifications to doing that? I'm afraid that if a make an error I'll be locked out and have a hassle, Any advice?

Yeah I think this process of test running your Wallet seed phrase is a good idea especially on cold wallets as Trezor which only showcases it seed phrase once because while setting up the wallet, you might probably copied an incorrect words knowingly whole you have to face the wrath in time as you tend to re-enter with your seed phrase.

If you still have access to the wallet even while lost the seed phrase, you can as well have access to your Bitcoin probably send it out to another or new generated wallet because the old one will keep your privacy at stake either you lost total access to your wallet and lost your funds or someone may get reach to your seed phrase and steal the funds in there. That is if you  initially misplaced the seed phrase.

I don't know for Trezor, but for other wallets I've used, once they give you your seed phrase, you will be asked to copy it down and re-enter or confirm that seedphrase. If you are able to re-enter it correctly according to the order it appeared the first time, it means the seedphrase you copied down is correct and there is nothing to worry about. But if you so wish to test your seed phrase to confirm if it's actually working, you can just download another wallet and import your seed phrase.

I supported your advice. However, it can also lead to human error which will lead to wallet vulnerability if the OP just follows the tip you provided when not knowing the right procedure to execute it because the OP seems to be a newbie in the cryptocurrency space.
Having said that, the best way to do this is using Electrum wallet which is first verified, and test the seed phrase on an air-gap computer.

There is seed words checking tool inside Trezor Suite app and there is no real danger in using that to see if all your words are correct.
You can't get locked but I would suggest in future first checking seed words before receiving any coins.
Just make sure to have backup stored in safe place, and consider adding passphrase for additional security, that is especially important for Trezor One devices.

How did you backup your seed phrase?
Is it buy written the words down in a book? If yea, I hope you double check the words well after written them down, and I hope you arrange them in the right order so as to be able to use it when ever the need come?

Or did you snap the seed phrase with a device that is connected to internet?
If yes, I will advise you to save the seed phrase offline, so that you can be sure about its security and make sure you alone have access to the seed phrase.

However, if you save the seed phrase well, no need to test it, it is right working perfect because many of us here have seed phrases and are using them perfectly.

That's a very bad idea.

You're right. The idea of picture, whether direct from camera or screenshot, should be avoided. We never can tell what loophole developers create as windows into their apps and could get to us through them. That's why the first thing I do before downloading any app is go through its "Data Safety" and Critical Reviews part of it. They may not be 100% absolute but those things give me a great sense of what to expect from such apps. Even at that, I still don't trust completely.

Testing: buy a 2nd Trezor, enter your seed, restore your wallet.

That would be a better way to go if the owner had extra cash to spare in buying another Trezor. If they're unable to restore it on the second Trezor, then they should know that something is wrong and they can quickly withdraw from the first one. By the way (I haven't used a hardware wallet before), I thought there should be a way of asking for seedphrase backup while setting up the wallet just like what we've with our regular software wallets.

That's if you entered the seed phrase correctly. But sometimes you can make a mistake and you wouldn't know, especially if the wallet requires you to enter just 3 or 4 random seed words during verification.

I think the ideal method is, after generating and backing up your seed phrase, take note of the first few addresses and delete the wallet. Import the seed phrase this time around and if the addresses match, it means the seed phrase is correct and everything is fine.

You can test your SEED on your cold ^{i.e machine which has never touched internet} computer with standalone offline version of BIP 39 generator..

Once again, this method is exclusively for cold computer. Never input your SEED into any Web_app/app/script run on machine connected to Internet

Besides. you can connect your wallet to testnet and u^{se testcoins} to test functionality of you wallet with given SEED.
