For quite some time now, I have known Telegram to be a scammers eden and I'm always careful dealing with unknown person there. Some few days back, I received a message from unknown person offering to buy my Telegram Username for 700 TON which is equivalent to $3,990. If you are greedy type you'll easily fall for their trick.

I already know it's a scam trick but I pretended and played along to know which format it is this time around. After some chit chat with the unknown person, I agreed to sell the Username. I asked about the payment process and he made mention of FRAGMENT which I'm not actually conversant with. He asked me to fund the wallet with 35 TON (5%) of the agreed amount he's offering to buy my Username. At this point, I'm certain it's definitely a scam and become extra careful.

To cut it short, he sent me a link to click and proceed with the transaction. I never click the link thou but I previewed the link and the details are shown in the screenshot below.





I was actually too busy and we were not able to get to the end of the drama. Now, his account is showing deleted account on Telegram. So, I have some few questions;
i. How does Fragment method of transaction really work?
ii. Has anyone experienced this method of scamming before?
iii. What's the trick here? How will it likely end?

First thing is you have no business actually conversing with this user, prolonging the chat is to me a waste of time and as I have recently find out the scammer can be the first to report your own account as a scammer before you do that to his own and you might lose the account.

Fragment that I know isn’t made for such transactions, fragment is a site used for purchasing of telegram stars which can be used for premium account subscriptions or other in app purchases on telegram, or also it is a website where you can buy unique usernames or business numbers for yourself, this things can still be bought for someone from your own fragment accounts. My guess is either the scammer gave a phishing fragment link to lure you into connecting your Ton wallet to drain them or they want to lure you to actually purchase any of the fragment services for them

From the amount the scammer is willing to pay for your telegram account you already know that he is a scammer because why will someone be offering you $3990 for a telegram account if he doesn't want to use it to scam your friends because that's exactly what most of them do when they take over someone's account. From screenshots, I can see there are hyper links to somewhere else. These links can direct you to a phishing sites, or malicious files, whatever not safe for you and your device, wallet.

It's the same as the scams of telling people that they've got some money in a trading website and you have to help them. And from there, you'll also be convinced to trade there and you have to fund your wallet. And you'll realize that you've been trapped and deposited your money on their own platform and there's no way out until you stop and block them.

Using Fragment as the payment or transaction channel is very strange to me since none of these scammers have referred it to me. But I have had several encounters with Telegram scammers and I simply don't give them any attention. It is just a waste of time and it also increases the risk you are exposed to.

After you have pay in the money, he might ask for more money or simply disappear with what he has collected if you are unwilling to give him more. Clicking on the link might lead to phishing which might expose some private information.

But while going through the website, I saw a section where usernames are been auctioned out for sale, but I haven’t tried them out before since I’m not in need of them. It is very easy, once you connect your wallet to the link he sent to you. Your money will be drained without getting them back. It’ll make the account expose and there is nothing you can do about it rather than abandoning the account since it’s already altered. Any incoming funds will still be stolen, so at that point, you’ve lost the wallet as a whole.

Not only do we have them on telegram, scammers are everywhere and most of the social media platform, we find out that they are using them as a haven aboard to perpetrate their evil deeds with scam, but when we are vigilant of their techniques as well as the common routes they take to hack and take charge of users accounts on social media platforms, then we are not going to be a victim to their attempts for scam or hack, but if we are ignorant of them, we may likely fall their trap and be their victim.

Yeah, it seems like wasting of time but it's actually not. Depending on how careful and security conscious we are, we can sometimes tolerate this scammers to know their new methods and alart others about it to be careful in case they come across such trap and they won't longer fall for it.

That's very crazy indeed. One out of your guess might be right because I don't understand why he asked me to fund my wallet with some TON to process the transaction and it'll be refunded back to me after the completion of the transaction. Does this even sound rational? What's the essence of funding in the first place if it'll be refunded later? Very suspicious.

That was the exact thing that came my mind when he sent the link. I actually did not click on the link but I preview it to see what it contains. We've heard about phishing links and how they'll get your device compromised and manipulate unless it's an empty device with non sensitive information stored in it.

I have no idea about that but it's possible that it's a bot or any type of channel or website that they have made for their victims to visit.

It's been confirmed on this thread that Fragment method actually do exist to carryout certain transactions on Telegram legitimately but it seems the scammers now attempts to make use of it to their own advantage by luring people with huge amounts of asset. We just have to be vigilant out there interacting with any payment method including the ones we are familiar with.

If I were you, I will contact one of trusted escrow in this forum and ask how much the fees, if he refuse to trade using escrow and insist to use his way, I will reject his offer, simple.

I haven't come across this kind method of scam but I am not surprised about it because scammers have many ways to scam people, they can do anything to make you fall into their trap, they have a sweet mouth and offer what you can't reject that is why some people fall into their trap, Scammers can message you in any website whether Facebook, Telegram and even WhatsApp, I wonder how some scammers get people number and be chatting them on WhatsApp, I have received many message on WhatsApp without not knowing the contact and ones the person who is chatting talking about investment and offer money I block and delete the number.

Telegram is a place where scammers do what they like, you will see a message with a link asking you to click the link as if they are the ones that bought you a phone, you made a very good plan by playing games with the scammers and the reason why the scammers delete the account is that people are about to notice or he has scam another person and delete the account, it is very good to be careful and not to be greedy if not one day we will lose something important to us.

I have no technical ideal to how the scammers strategies with the request of Fragment wallet but I have known Fragment wallet to be a non custodial crypto wallet that's also associated with internet interaction features to facilitate transactions.
It is fragmented also as multisig signatories for accessed.

I think if you've followed the scammers directive and you don't just have ideal to suspect it is a scam, while processing to get into the Fragment platform would there be when he'll redirect you to assign him to the signatory so when are have access to the wallet and steam the amount of Ton you deposited there.

I've had lots of strangers like this in my dm and they usually have one thing in common. It's either they want to help you fix something or they want to offer you money for something that isn't really of value to you.Their targets are usually greedy users or total newbies they can easily manipulate or influence. No matter the offer a stranger would approach anyone with, they (especially newbies) should avoid clicking links or sending money to strangers. Infact, avoid them completely.

The end is just too obvious. It will end in you sending them money and clicking on malicious links. All scam!

This is several methods that scammers use in defrauding of their funds that is why it's always advisable not to discuss anything related to business especially sending of money to people online that are strange and new as there are a lot of fraudstar that are on social media platforms waiting for who will fall victim to their tricks

Thank God you didn't fall for the scam. The link he sent is obviously a drainer and if you had clicked it, you would have lost your funds. I know about fragment and how the selling of telegram username works, although I've not sold any. Since you are the one selling, you are not supposed to fund your account, it should be the buyers job. Yours is to put up your username for sale on the platform while he connects his wallet, accept the username and pays.
