Back prior to 701 BC, the Earth had 360 days a year, and the moon had 30 days a month. Mars was a rogue planet traveling on a weird 'eliptical' orbit through the Solar System. Mars's orbit happened to cut through Earth's orbit at times.

In 701 BC Mars crossed Earth's orbit near Earth. The gravitational influence between the two planets threw Earth into its current calendar orbit, and threw Mars into its current orbit.

Mars had passed by Earth in this kind of a way at least several times before 701 BC. But the necessity of needing it again like this is gone. So Mars has been parked in its current orbit.

When it comes to calendars, I like it in periods of 4 weeks, it makes like for like comparisons much easier, has some logic to it... if it weren't for those pesky days lost at the end of the year named P14... damm.

a 13 month calendar is beyond ones self being able to even think about. to be fair to most people i think a 12 month calendar they struggle to get past each year.

Actually, Earth's natural way has been changed over times. It happened by Mars doing several, distant-past, Earth flybys. The calendar used to be 12, 30-day, months... bringing the Earth to 360 days in the year. But Mars threw this calendar out of line in the 701BC flyby.
