We have seen Elon using X-Twitter to try to dissolve a foreign pairlament and Trump to threat countries that until now were US allies. Apple has had to pay to Trump's fund and Facebook has removed any possibility of fact-checking.

Now recently Trump decided that Tik-Tok can stay but needs to be "50%" US in partnership, which effectively means "I will not close Tik-Tok, as it is much much better to use it in my own political agenda".

It is also said that "DOGE", the "department" to slash goverment funding to, for example, the FBI and the IRS (see Elon's tweets on that), is likely to become a government outside the government, where millionaires will go and buy de-regulations that will unprotect the people and make the uber-rich more uber-rich.

We need alternatives to these US government controlled and semi-controlled media.

I don't quite understand the change of heart the Republican party or Trump are having concerning their position against TikTok, to be honest. They had been quite antagonistic on the Chinese government and any corporation like that one which owns TikTok (which obviously has ties with the Chinese Communist Party.

Are they willing to contradict their previous discourse on anti-CCP for the sake of getting another social media and platform to further push their agenda?.
It would have been easier or more in tone with the Republican party to allow some big technological company to take over TikTok, making it an 100% American social media.

Quite silly how the USA government is allowed to stockpile personal information of their citizens, but foreign governments are not allowed to do so. No wonder why in China nobody uses American social media.

Countries are gradually losing their sovereignty because some individuals control social media. If Elon can successfully do that in the US, other nations are not safe. It is now I am beginning to understand why some countries sensor these platforms.

How about Reddit, Mastodon or Bluesky? Bluesky and mastodon at least have decentralized structure. Personally i am looking them as an alternative as i just left all social media, including Meta, after they admitted some people can’t even unfollow the crazy leader on instagram. It's all just a boomer dumpster fire.

Xitter has crossed the parody horizon, and lost all credibility since Elmo took over.

And no matter the policy of these sites, or ownership, "dead internet" is the growing problem these days. All the sites are riddled ai bots. Ton of new contend and recycled stolen content is being flooded by AI, and even this post is being used to teach the freaking bots how to write more human-like.

You are right, they have to abide by the law, the question is who and why is making the law. You are supposed to make laws that favour the people and that are democratic. One of the pillars of democracy is free speech and free press.

As of today, social networks are being used as the information source for many people, so installing a pro-Trump overseer - and highly unqualified - in Meta, for example, does not seem like a law, but rather an imposition onto puny Zukerberg.

Yes. Same point I am also trying to make. When it comes to Trump, all I see is a smart leader who's bringing his wealth of experience which he has garnered over the year in the business arena to politics and leadership of the country. He's of advantage because he's done it before in his first tenure so he knows the flaws he made the last time and how to correct it. Collaboration is very important in any leadership especially for a country as big and influential as the United States of America.

This is the advantage the USA have over having Donald Trump as the president, one of the features of having radical people like Trump is seen in the ban of TikTok recently which is due reasons attached to fears expressed by the government over the Chinese App's ability to collect the American data, tension over data privacy leak and cybersecurity. I think the government wants to kinda ensure it safeguards the country's data privacy against intruders which can be from an App like TikTok.

If President Trump wants to control the social media space now, then I don't find any fault in that. The social media CEOs had it coming, we still can remember vividly how the then Twitter controlled by Jack and Facebook controlled by Mark Zuckerberg at some point places a suspension on Donald Trump account, basically I felt it was an affront to the person of Donald Trump, so if at this point he is gagging the social media space, then it's a return of the same energy they gave him.
The 50% partnership with china for the Tik-Tok app is generally a fair deal for me, instead of the outright ban that was initially proposed, because a lot of Americans have their businesses on tiktok and it will be another economic setback if that happened.

This was the same energy we were looking for when they suspended his account on social media, he was simply looking for a free speech were nobody can get your account suspended for saying what you have in mind, if my memory serves me right, it took Elon musk after owning Twitter to have been able to restore back Donald Trump's account on Twitter, democracy allowes for free speech but it had a different case when it was Donald Trump, Donald had his ego bruised with that suspension, because he is one man that's loves social media. I beleive Trump's account was suspended for inciting violence, which is one of the very obvious reasons for which free speech has to be limited. It would be exactly the same in any newspaper.

Oh... Yeah I remember when Trump got his Twitter (as was known then) account @ realDonaldTrump banned for inciting violence after he lost to Biden in 2021.

You are right. Trump already has the big guys in the media behind his back and so they could just be on round table with some cup of tea and then gag the freedom of speech for the duration of trump's administration.

Press freedom is the beauty of democracy because it gives the opposite the opportunity to observe and in form of criticism, suggest to the government what direction they have left off the road from their campaign promises
