In my opinion, if I had to go for an alternative currency to diversify Bitcoin holding, I would go for Ethereum and Litecoin. One for its utility and the other one for their extremely ease of use and high liquidity.
This thread though it might be a matter of going for an alternative currency to diversify Bitcoin trading. Still your two picks seem great in the abstract, I'd just want to look at the actual volatility of BTC/ETH and BTC/LTC, maybe particularly at the venue I plan to start trading them at, to check they aren't so stable that many days they won't even reach the bottom of my sell offers column nor drop down to chew into the top of my buy offers column. With BTC/XLM I get days when it just hovers in my spread, but other days when I sell a couple offers and buy a few too, or get five or six offers on one side or the other taken. If BTC/ETH and BTC/LTC are similar sure I could make a living on either of them like I currently am doing on BTC/XLM I just won't be able to spare enough capital to do that until I have built my BTC/XLM offers full size all the way up and down (some are still undersized offers toward the ends, especially near bottom where I thin it out to cash in some bitcoin but soon also toward the very top where I will eventually start thinning occasionally to take some XLM over to Stellar to use it to build more buy offers for assets on Stellar platform). I would still though suggest great that is two picks of pairs too large to expect to really have much influence/effect upon so still look at adding some pairs where a mere grand can make a powerful difference, really strengthening the coin and maybe thus also bring it to the attention of more folk who will relatively be newbies to one's own growing status as an earlier adopter. -MarkM- EDIT: The term make a living implies of course making more livings, as many as possible, is a good thing. EDIT2: Also of course, think what the growing hoard or income of ETH or LTC will be used for, are their use cases more useful to you than other similar picks' use-cases might be?

I suggest to hold the less altcoins as much as possible to monitor easily all your investments since crypto investments is so volatile which means you will have less time to react in case you are watching bunch of altcoins at the same time and checking technical analysis.
Just invest on Bitcoin then add 2 to 3 altcoins. Choose a high marketcap altcoin like ETH, XRP and ADA then add 1 low marketcap with low allocation of your capital for your FOMO holding.
You don’t need to ride every hype on crypto. You just need to focus on quality investment over quantity since crypto is volatile investment.
After having few years in this community now I also understand always keep your portfolio less works because due to volatility market and instability around us keep us on risk and things are never been favourable for investor so if anyone want to invest in altcoins then do some search and keep just 4 to 5. Now mostly big players love to big portion in bitcoin then have division for others with just one coin which have great potential of jumping is enough because this will give you less risk, and you also feel better. Having investment in every pump and always dump not work because this need more work and effort which is not possible for all with in recent time we have too many scam projects which are eating huge amount of investors specially their target are newbies because greediness and having good profit in short time encourage them which ends in bad.

I think when you're just starting with altcoins, its important not to go heavy on too many projects. If you're looking for high risk and the possibility of big rewards, i'd suggest diversifying across 3-5 coins. That way, you spread out your risk without overwhelming yourself with too many assets to manage
The most stable option is to take the biggest 3-5 coins and get ready to hodl them till the alt season booms. Everything can't go downhill from here, only in case you have shaky hands because of said coins / you are scared of a bit of red.

Hi all,
New here. I'm traditional equities trader that got involved with BTC in Feb 2020, and have fortunately bought at at every bottom since then. Diving into altcoins, I'm wondering how many coins do y'all recommend one should hold at one time? Let's say I'm still just dabbling and want to invest $5k (OK with this going to zero), how many altcoin do you recommend that I'd invest in for the risk reward to be 10x or 0?
Thank you,
We are delighted to have you as a member of the community, welcome to the forum. If am recommending I wouldn't recommend a particular number of altcoins you're to hold with that $5k sum spread. But will say you get into work do your research on different altcoins of your interests and any number you perceive to have a good rewarding potential you can with them all and spread your $5k across. Let hypothesize that I recommend 3 for you whereas you could have gone with 4 but due to my recommendation to dropped the fourth one and at the end the fourth altcoin which you had to drop gave a huge risk reward than the entire three. It would be sad, and it's due to something of this nature probably happening that I sometimes don't like telling people about number of coins they should go for.

Your money your rules, and this is what i do prefer on which you are the ones who do make out some decisions when it comes into your investment because if you are that trying out to listen up on others ideas and preference then it will really be that leading into regret at the time or moment that you would be seeing negative into your investment. Its not bad to listen up with some real experience advises but in the end of the day on which you are the ones who will really be that making up the final decision when it comes into this manner and it will be that recommended that you do really that invest into the amount on which you can afford to lose so that you wont be that become impulsive once this market will be making out such shit movement. If you do want to invest into having that 10x gain or more then consider out on investing into low caps like on top 100 or 200 and not into those top 10 coins in the market excluding Bitcoin on which we know that when it comes those multipliers then talking up realistically on which it is really that hard to reach up these multipliers specially on this upcoming bull run on which of course it will really be that something not known since there's no way that we can be able to predict on what the market would really be having in terms about price then this is something on which this is always that speculative and there's no one will be able on where these prices will really be that ending up into.

If you have been into bitcoin since 2020, you already have experience of the how the market is and what to expect depending on the coin you invested on. Altcoin (especially meme coins) investment is like gambling, there's no limit to the number of coins or token you must hold because you are not certain about the one that will be so profitable. What you should be concerned about is the risk that is involved and the amount you are will to risk. If you have $5k and you want to risk it on altcoins, you can spend $200 each to buy 25 different tokens.

For $5k investment, i'd recommend focusing on a handful of altcoins you truly believe in and understand. Rather than trying to pick up dozens of coins, i find it helpful to keep a concentrated portfolio of 3-4 altcoins. this strategy gives you more control while still offering some potential for exponential growth.

Welcome to the world of crypto, bro. But first, know that "it is not how far but how well." You don't need to buy all altcoins in this world, a carefully selected 3-5 is okay for you. You can start by selecting from the top-10 rated altcoins, you may select 3 coins from that category. Then you might move to the lower ones with good projects and history. Unnoticed tokens like RAY have been tremendously helpful to its buyers over the years.

Well when we are investing in crypto currencies we should diversify our portfolio. This way if the main coin we hodl like Bitcoin does go down we can still make gains from other coins. But I do not think ti does matter so much how many coins we do have. Because we can hodl 100 of a coin and that is only a small amount of fiat. I do think it is better to see how many percentages of each coin is in our portfolio.

2 to 3 will be fine. With that amount of capital that you're totally okay to lose it, I won't play with memecoins with that money. I'll still choose to go with the safest route of choosing the potential ones that are already established. There are still a lot of top altcoins that didn't moved up on this cycle and that's why having that chance to see them move up is there. You know that you're in here already for how many years and it's best for you to avoid those suggestions that tells you to buy some unknown shit and memecoins.

Boringgg With $5k you could easily put $200 into a few risky coins in the hope they give you 20-50x over the next 6 months. Everyone has different risk levels but for me I don’t see point of making a 3 or 4x with $5k , you got to aim higher than that in the peak months of the bull run. Low cap altcoins will easily 10x over the next 6 months towards the end of the bull run and even the more risky micro cap coins can 50x.

If you want to invest $5k, you can split your money into 2 parts which are $3k for Bitcoin and $2k for altcoin. About how many altcoins you can invest, that will be up to you but I suggest that no more than 5 coins to avoid confuse to manage the coins.
But if you can handle more than 5 coins, you can expect to see the profit will be bigger. But it is not easy to do that because when the altcoin season coming, you can be difficult to watch and monitor all of your assets and that can makes you late to sell.

But of course by placing your column of sell offers ahead of time and placing proceeds of your buy offers as sell offers higher in price as soon as you take delivery, you are always ready to sell unless price skyrockets up over your highest sell offer, which is why it is so important to build the column sky high then continue toward astronomically high.

So it's about putting stop-losses and take-profits correctly for you? Or these are different from what you describe?

So it's about putting stop-losses and take-profits correctly for you? Or these are different from what you describe? In a sense the columns of offers are like that, but they can be done on simple limit-order (aka order at specific price) venues it doesn't need fancy tools like triggers on price to post new offers in response etc. I gave links earlier in this thread to couple of good examples, where you can also see the building of the bottom of the possible prices range extra-strong since below 1000 sats per, and way worse below 100 sats per, just being low price seems to attract more dumpers so you need extra strengh to gobble up those yummy dumps with minimal number of possible prices of buy offer destroyed so you can build buy side back up hopefully quickly afterward maybe even in time to stop the dumper triggering panic of dumps. Which panics of course are just yet more coins cheaper so its all good in the long haul. Historically I have ratcheted IXC and I0C to a dollar or more per at least 3 or 4 times and all that put a stop to it each time was fly by night or "we got hacked' exchanges running off with both sides of the order-book. So off to another venue and do it all again and oops happened again. FreiExchange has been a good loyal exchange so hopefully that won't happen there, and if it does no problem I also have Stellar, where the buy-side coin (XLM) stays safe in non-custodial wallet even while being a buy offer for something. So long haul it is all going to be good though sheer number of pairs in the world dilutes traffic per pair so much everything takes longer nowadays. -MarkM- EDIT: The money is in the buying back and reselling same coins over and over and over again, not in how many total you own, you can bury your hoard in concrete under your swimming-pool and likely your great-grandheirs still won't ever need to dig them up as the more buried the more money in the same old ones still being bought back and resold forever at ever higher prices...

Hi all,
Thank you,
2 to 3 will be fine. I know that but for someone who's got that money and can't put that much risk on those altcoins that you've said that can multiply to 20x-50x over the next few months, I wouldn't go that route. I'm more careful with my strategy investing on the market and I've seen the best and the worst of it and that's why with my suggestion is a conservative way of dealing the market. I understand your point and risk management but just as you've said, we're not the same and it could be different for OP too. Whether it's 3x or 4x or 5x, the important point there is you've made still a profit compared to the risky approach that you'll get potential 50x gains but the risk is so much.

There is no right or wrong , its just down to our preference. I am currently all in on altcoins (plan to be all in on Bitcoin in the next bear market) and am currently +140% overall. My worst altcoin is 65% down but i have a few that are up over 500% and one over 2000%. For me, I just felt last few years to take the risk in altcoins and then play it more safe with Bitcoin next cycle when I hopefully have a lot more funds to invest with.

My worst altcoin is 65% down but i have a few that are up over 500% and one over 2000%. You're still in profit with that stats and I can say that with your diversification, you did great with that. But it's not the same story with others that have diversified and yours is one of the many that are winners and you did a good choice with the alts that you're holding. It's a nice plan to accumulate more on the bear market and we're on the same with that, I just can't avail to go on all in with the alts now but learned the lesson of mine to stick mostly with bitcoin but I've got some alts that I've been holding for so long. For me, I just felt last few years to take the risk in altcoins and then play it more safe with Bitcoin next cycle when I hopefully have a lot more funds to invest with.
Good luck with that, you're doing good with what you are holding right now and hopefully it will be more fruitful on the next cycle but we're not yet done for this year and the cycle that we're playing now.

Diversification is key, but too many altcoins can dilute potential gains. With $5k, I’d suggest picking 5-7 solid projects, enough to spread risk while staying manageable to track. Focus on projects with strong fundamentals, not just hype

Only a few altcoins are recommended as investing in them isn’t as easy as investing in Bitcoin. Altcoins undergo a lot of developments such as network changes, swaps, and other updates. If you're not monitoring your investments you might wake up one day to find your assets have become worthless, that's why its recommended to have just a few altcoins as it's easier to keep track and monitor your investments.
