My name is Elias, and I’m from Spain. I’m new to forums and only posting here because ChatGPT suggested this might be a good place to find advice.

I recently found my old computer and realized it has a cryptocurrency wallet I used back in 2021. At the time, I bought some crypto, but later switched to a new computer and forgot all about it. Now I’ve rediscovered the wallet but can’t remember the password.

Since I don’t know anyone with expertise in crypto, I don’t know what to do. ChatGPT suggested that selling the wallet might be an option, but I want to avoid hackers or scams.

Can a wallet like this be sold? If yes, how can I do it securely?

A way from avoiding getting scammed, and trying to sell the wallet securely, why would someone want to buy a wallet that you completely forgot the password? It doesn't make sense since they can't access it at all without the password, does it?

Do you know part of the password of the wallet file you are attempting to sell? There could be a possibility of brute forcing it if a few characters are missing. Which wallet software were you using at that time, and which coin/coins are contained in the account?

If you're only holding 'partial' of the password then it's not going to be accessible until you have it. There is no sense in selling it to anybody with no idea of the other part of the password you have made. Because if these wallets are sellable then everyone should have sold most of their old wallets instead of selling what's inside of it that has probably gotten a larger value of holdings in there. Until you can remember the password, that's the only way it will have a sense of monetizing it and if I were you, if I successfully remembered the password, I'd take what's inside of it, the BTC you have in there and sell it to exchanges if that's what you want since you're trying to sell the wallet. Because with that, there is no risk of being scammed of selling the wallet online and we don't really sell the wallets we own.

Any wallet that you have forgotten the password or seedphrase is useless as seeing yourself in a dream driving car but physical you are walking.
If you can't access your wallet due to how you may have forgotten password or seed phrase I don't think that same wallet will be that useful to the buyer since you the original owner can not access the wallet whom else do you think can access it? Definitely no one because they don't have the real access to the wallet, and who knows if those assets inside of it are valuable assets or they are long gone dead coin.

What you're saying is strange because, at that time, Trust Wallet was only available on smartphones.

You're better off trying to brute force the wallet or find a trusted guy who could do it for you. You have to pinpoit which wallet you have though.

TBH, trading wallet files has been sus for the most part IMO—as buyers are at a disadvantage. For instance, in another software people could create encrypted wallet files which is actually empty or download random wallet files from known dump websites + craft their own fake story. I personally stay away from it.

He doesn't even say how many sats he had in that wallet, which makes it impossible to quantify its value.

Brute force would be the most typical option in the last case. In addition, I've recently heard that AI can help reducing the amount of possibilities from millions to thousands, if it's trained with the info from the person who created the password. Although I don't think that we're there yet, perhaps it is a possibility in the short term.

Yes, Becassine made a good point about it. He allegedly rediscovered the wallet but he is not even able to tell us about his name

OP when you create new wallet on Trust wallet it prompts you to write down seed words.

If you can find paper or file where you written seed words down, then you don't need password at all. Just recreate that wallet on another device to see if you can access your funds that way.

That's an interesting development on the AI side of things. I'm always in awe about how rapidly AI is developing.

Perhaps, if all else fails, op could just hold onto it or pass it on later down the line to someone younger in the family. Who knows, perhaps by that time, the world is already at that stage. In addition, I strongly believe bitcoin is likely to increase value over time hence most of my bag is BTC.

I've received a lot of similar messages in the past, people claiming to have lost access to old wallets and looking for help or trying to sell them. Be very cautious.

Some scammers will try to send you a “special” version of a wallet client, saying things like “in this version the wallet works”, but in reality, it’s just malware designed to steal your MetaMask or other wallets. I’ve tested a few of these in a virtual machine and found trojans embedded.

I’m not saying you’re a scammer, of course, just pointing out that this type of situation tends to attract shady actors, so it’s a very risky area to deal with.


If you really own the wallet and just forgot the password, your safest move is to use trusted, offline password recovery tools on your own device. Never share your wallet file or private key, and avoid running tools or clients sent by strangers.

Does this wallet allow you to change your password? If yes, you can do it on your own unless you don't change the password. How can others do it, and so there's no point in acquiring your wallet, right? Which Dapp do you use right now? I'm using Bitget Wallet, Trust Wallet and Solana-based Phantom sometimes.
