Public request to Theymos for a name change

Hi Theymos,

I sent you a PM a week ago requesting to change my username, and I was going to leave it for a while until I insisted again but today I saw this that made me think that it is better to create a thread about it:

In my experience: theymos probably reads it and responds when it's needed, but PMs are often ignored. So if you didn't get a reply, you can assume you're being ignored on purpose.

The reason I want to change the name is very simple: I don't play poker anymore.

The name I have chosen I prefer not to say in public to avoid that someone could create an account with that same name, but it does more justice to what I currently write on the forum. I have checked that there is no one with an account with that name at present.

Obviously I will respect your decision if for any reason you decide not to change it but if I don't get an explicit response, from time to time I will bump the thread.

Half of the forum here would like to change their nickname, why do you think that admin will make an exception for you, personally?

Nicknames are usually changed for those who have made a great contribution to the forum. Ratimov aka Symmetrick, for example, has done a lot of useful things. And what useful things have you done? Advertised casinos and poker? And now you have changed your mind and want to keep your rank under a new clean nickname?

About theymos to change your username, I am very certain that he is going to change it. But theymos has posted somewhere before that not all messages that he reads or remember or so. I am not exactly correct. I have forgotten what he posted or that he sent in PM to someone that posted it. But the conclusion is that you should keep sending theymos message about it. You can do it every month.

Just know that theymos will change your username but it may take time.

It’s entirely your choice to wanna change your name and bear what you feel is befitting your identity or mirror your personality on the forum, but in my opinion (if it’s even needed) would be, there’s certainly no point in changing your username. I mean, I believe Poker Player would ring the bell more than any other name you might wanna choose, regardless of how cool you feel it might sound to the ear. Honestly, I believe your name suits your perfectly well with your personality here (Figuratively).

From my own observation theymos is more selective (I could be wrong) on the kind of pm he responds and if he see that the pm has no meaning he wouldn't mind ignoring it for his best reasons. Again, I can't also tell how many PMs he gets in day and he could be too lazy or a bit slack to go through all the PMs but certainly he would definitely respond to you. I think I have once sent him pm before and it took only within 24hrs to get me feedback, maybe I think this can be from the importance of my requests imo.
But however, @Poker Player did you by any means put the administrators in a copy, I think global administrator can as well have access to change username if theymos is that busy they may help out.

anyway, Theymos changing member's username is not entirely dependent on whether the user has made a great contribution to the forum. from what I know theymos also considers the reasoning why the member wants to change their username and if he finds the reasoning valid enough he will probably grant the name change.

I’ve briefly mentioned this in some comments on threads in the Gambling Discussion, but I guess it makes sense to summarize it here.

I started playing poker 15 or 16 years ago. Back then, it was really easy to win if you learned a few basic things, like a starting hand chart, the most fundamental odds, and how to play TAG (tight aggressive). I probably could have moved up the stakes further if I hadn’t needed the money at that time. Once I reached a profitable enough level, instead of climbing higher, I started making weekly cashouts. Not long after that, the poker Black Friday happened, marking the beginning of the decline of online poker (at least as I knew it).

Then came regulations, reductions in rakeback, and increases in rake, along with a gradual toughening of the games as the use of statistics software and poker schools became widespread. This caused the cashouts I was able to make to decrease.

But throughout all those years, I played poker practically every day, sometimes switching up the game type or platform, but always playing. Long story short, in 2020 when I signed up, after so many years of decline, there was an online poker boom. Thanks to COVID and the lockdowns, a lot more people stuck at home, bored, started playing poker without having a clue what they were doing while sipping on some beers. 2020 and the first half of 2021 turned out to be very profitable years.

But during all this time, I was also investing in the stock market long-term at first, and later in Bitcoin. This has resulted in me no longer needing the money I could make today for the amount of time I’d have to spend playing. On top of that, after so many years, I no longer find it motivating, and I’m tired of the variance swings, which can sometimes feel endless.

That’s why I gradually started playing less and less as I watched my net worth grow and my profitability to decrease again until last year, when I finally stopped playing altogether. It’s been several months now since I’ve played a single hand.

So, I don’t see any point in being called "Poker Player" anymore here if I no longer play and don’t plan to, at least not like I used to when I was playing practically every day.

Just know that theymos will change your username but it may take time.

It is clearly written there that PM is the only format for such an application. Or prepare 50 bitcoins to become a VIP in accordance to the official guide that quoted above

This topic is not an officially recognized method of application. Therefore, this topic should be locked due to non-compliance with the username changing application procedure.

In one of the most subtle words, you've described exactly why you need a name change. But you see, mostimes we don't tend to get what we want, at the time we want it..

Remember those days? TP would cry out his ass and view his screens like his life depended on it, but nothing happened... It became a public concern (which, I guess is exactly why Theymos would add or remove a function) before he decided to put it into consideration. Theymos is realllll slow to implementing a function, which is good with a thousand and one reasons; it's easy to grant every name change request, but what's not going to turn out easy is when everyone decides to make it a culture; that would mean a total catastrophe.
I don't wanna ask personal questions as to the "hows" and "whys" you decided to stop playing poker, but I hope your request gets granted.

I support your name change request, but unfortunately it's not like a merit source application, whether the thread gets support or not, theymos does what he likes with respect to name change as there's no specific rules guiding it.

I bolded a part of your statement. The reason you chose Poker Player was because you played poker in the past and you no longer play it now. The new username you said best describes what you do now, how about in few years time, you no longer do what you do now, will you want theymos to change your username again?

I will advice you choose a username based on your personality and not what you do contemporarily.

It makes sense that you would want to a name change since you have obviously evolved, I think this is a common request because from what I read, most users didn’t give it much thought before choosing a username. I’ve seen a number of popular forum members change their usernames in the past and I’m sure that you being an older member of the forum than I am, you should have a better idea of what Theymos considers good enough reason for an username change. I think it’s easier when you are requesting a name change due to privacy reasons. Good luck with your request and keep sending Theymos a pm from time to time.

I'm not sure about others but I believe it's okay if someone wants to get a new username. As OP mentioned that he's not someone's who plays poker anymore and that's why I believe Theymos should help him with name change. I hope the new name that you choose really reflects your personality OP. Hope to see new name on your profile if Theymos accepts your request of name change.

I know several users who managed to change their nickname. The one who changed his nickname twice, if I'm not mistaken, left his nickname at the root; that is, the sound of his nickname remained close in sound. Also, it is difficult not to recognize the former "the pharmacist," both by his temperament in writing and by his entire figure.

Every day they would tell me: "I'm quitting casinos" or "I'm not playing poker anymore"
This addiction is the strongest of all addictions and stronger than drug addiction.
I don't trust such people and since then I prefer not to have any dealings with them.

Admin is smart enough to know this. He will not change its nickname at the whim of this addict.


Even if OP were not addicted, the statement "I will not play poker anymore" is not a valid reason to change the nickname. Not playing poker is perfectly possible with the current nickname.

What prevents OP from "not playing poker anymore" with current nickname? Does OP's current nickname somehow limit his intention to "not play poker"? If OP with the current nickname cannot "not play poker" - then his addiction has never gone away. And his addiction situation is much worse than he tries to pretend. His application only proves once again that he has a weak will and a rather strong addiction.



Nickname can be changed if there is a threat of doxing. Only at this case it is a valid reason. And there are no personal names in his nickname. And all sorts of addictions are your personal problems that the admin is not obliged to solve. Admin has more serious matters

Yes, I will do that from time to time as long as I don't get explicit feedback, and it's true what you say. If there had never been any name changes ever (in the post-50 bitcoins era) it wouldn't have occurred to me to ask for it but since there have been I don't see why it was changed to others and shouldn't be changed to me.

In order for a nickname to change, there must be a valid reason. Changing mind about pokers is not a valid reason.
