PSU shuts down with the S1 Antminer.

I use the paperclip trick, turn on the PSU(works fine), the antminer also powers up and I can access the settings panel, but after 2 minutes or so, the PSU just outright shuts down...what the hell is wrong?

Is it actually dead? The problem is that the VS series is group regulated, so it uses both the 5V line and the 12V line in its feedback circuit. If you draw current from only the 12V rail, the voltage on the 12V rail will drop a lot (sometimes under 11V) and the 5V rail will go really high, which can cause it to shut down. I have a VX450 that is similar, it will shut down if I try to run a Single or S1 on it, but if I draw 1A from the 5V rail it runs fine.

so you need to suck up 1Amp usage on the 5V cable

HI, I have the same problem with Corsair VS550. So I have to use 2 Corsair VS550  per 1 ANTminer S1. so I don't understand where they claim that they can use 550W. I use other brand which is cheaper one. It work fine. any idea?

like I said you need to power something on the 5v cable so that the power supply can balance the power.

Looks like I'm screwed, I called the retailer and told him I want to swap the PSU for something else as this one isn't "enough", obviously the answer I got wasn't satisfying, so guys. Suggest me how to make it work, I have no devices to plug in the 5v line, and the ones that I did were not enough.

And how do you do that?

I plug a spare PC fan on the red/black cable on a molex connector.

Other options are to attach an old hard drive, floppy drive, CD/DVD drive etc.

The problem was not the paperclip trick, the problem was as explained by GiLa. Plugging in a simple CD-ROM drive/HDD fixed the problem for me. However, it's a dirty fix.

Those items also include a load resistor to eliminate the need for a HDD.

First off why do I want to remember remember the 5th of november? Really I am curious .


second those links all include a resistor to give you a proper load ,    They are the clean fix!

and the cheapest one is about 5 bucks or less.

 The paperclip solution is a fire hazard and if you burn you place down your insurance may not pay, using an hdd or a cd player along with the paperclip is truly stupid cheap .

This goes out to all s-1 miners myself included.  We pay about  600 USD for the s-1 with the psu and the router the switches, cat 6 cables.  plus power bill or close to

700 usd  and then you don't buy  a 4 dollar plug to do the psu correctly.  That is stupid cheap.

BTW I have the plugs as  being 'stupid cheap' has burned me more then once!  LOL

How is it wired?  You are probably not using the other 12 volt rail.

I had this problem, at first I had the 6 pin connector plugged into one card and then I bought this wire convertor that changed two 4 pin plugs into a 6 pin, it over heated quick and shut down every time.  Furthermore if you have two 6 pin connectors on the same wire(as in jumped together) and are using them this is your problem and use my fix as they are on the same rail, see below.

The problem was there are two 12 volt rails and I was only using one rail. I had to cut the ends of the eight(Two for pin) 12 volt plug and wire into the terminals for one card, and plug the 6 pin connector into the other card.  Basically 1 rail to CPU and stuff, 1 to GPU and stuff.

You can use a resistor, I've had luck with a 56 Ohm 1/2 Watt resistor between 5v and ground on the 24pin connector.  Your supply might need something that draws more power if your really do need to draw 1 Amp.  There was a helpful thread on reddit a few days back about this same exact problem.  Make sure the wattage rating on the resistor is high enough or you will start a fire...

are you making good contact with the paperclip or is it loose?  I'm running 2 overclocked antminers per 1 RM850 corsair psu.  For the psu, I used a jumper wire(radio shack) and folded the ends(to make it thicker) before inserting into connector.

OP - the jumpers philipma1957 posted do work and eliminate the need for a cd-rom or HD plugged in.  I've used them on several different PSUs on Ants and Cubes.

edit: you will need a wifi antenna if wireless mining.

Some ATX power supplies are crappy and won't work if you only have things plugged into the +12 volt lines.  The CDROM or resistor trick loads the +5 volt line as well and makes the crap supplies function normally.  It's mostly older and super cheap supplies that have this problem so it is kind of rare.

I'm using cooler master 700 g series 80 Plus Bronze for Overclock Antminer S1. once in a while (3-4 days) it shuts off without any reason. Temp is around 42-44.
