Are Testnet projects/airdrops profitable ?

Farming new projects was seen as total waste of time but surprisingly farmers are hyping up testnet projects/airdrops now claiming they are the next big thing.

Testnet and airdrop are not the next big thing because they have been in existence for a long time, though their current model of it is quite different from the early days of crypto.

Testnet projects like Berachain, Mitosis and Sahara AI keep showing up on my feed and it seem investors might really go  hard on these projects as they look promising especially Berachain which airdrop checker is out now and i heard it’s getting listed tomorrow but i would like to know if anyone here participated and what the price could likely because i’m contemplating investing in it or not.

A project looking promising doesn't mean it will be promising, and if the market's major players are not interested in it, ignore it.

Some people do not know what this is. Are you "getting paid" with a promise of future credits, or literally test tokens on a testnet which are not originally intended to have value? 

Every crypto project that wants to create its blockchain network will start by testing the network with the use of a testnet coin. However, if it is an AI or depin project, the project team only needs people who can share their computing network power. People are rewarded in points during the project that host the testnet based on the task they executed when the project launched their crypto; they will give each participant their crypto based on the points.

After the rise and fall of Telegram projects we’ve seen how quick people can switch from hyping projects to attacking them ( i agree these projects deserved the attacks ). Whatever it is you want to try, whether it's a new coin or testament, make sure you are using money that you can afford to lose. You should not feel regret when you are done investing and don't get your money back because these new projects are not 100% sure. It's still on probability, and no one can tell you it's going to be successful because it's not like major coins like Bitcoin. But you can always give it a try but use spare cash to try it.

OP the best answer for now has been given, they are not of value, so don't take them serious even if the hype on them were much that they started convincing people for going into them, there might be a different intentions for them to be doing so, some may want their testnet to get noticed together with their platform, while some are even promoting their sites by offering for free a speculated amount of testnet for free, imagine all these, they are not real values and even airdrops are more better in value than testnet coins, as said earlier, for now, they are of no value.

You're right doing those testnet is just like a waste of time, I could remember when I'm still new in this crypto space a friend of my introduced me in one of those testnet platform so I was so excited to join the project hoping that I'm going to get profited from that project. Without knowing that all the time and the data is just a waste, the funniest part is that when they launched the testnet they couldn't even allow their users to move the coin to that wallet they choose to move the coin to, the withdrawal option was not even working, Of course airdrop projects is way more better than those testnet but the problem is how to get the right one.

I went all the way through the Beauchaine testnet and eventually received 547 BERA tokens, which were sold for $5200. It was completely free, the only expenses for which were computer electricity bills. As for Mitosis and Sahara, there has not been an airdrop for them yet, and you can still manage to complete the necessary activities.

I went all the way through the Beauchaine testnet and eventually received 547 BERA tokens, which were sold for $5200. It was completely free, the only expenses for which were computer electricity bills. As for Mitosis and Sahara, there has not been an airdrop for them yet, and you can still manage to complete the necessary activities.

I was very active before, but last few months, i just didnt have the energy to waste time on a buggy testnet, so i completely forgot about it, and got like 10 BERA

Yes, this is a good reward for the work that I have been doing since January 2024. And if it weren't for the bugs that the testers encountered, it would have been possible to do this work on multiple accounts) But just in the last few months before TGE, everything worked clearly and without bugs.

Honestly, with 5 million wallets chasing BERA,  i'm surprised rewards were this decent.
Every indian, nigerian, phillipino and their aunts were chasing it to the point that network was so congested you couldn't do any transaction

I don't do airdrops now but I used to be regularly active few months ago, even then I considered testnet projects to be waste of time, but yeah I was proven wrong with Movement airdrop — I haven't checked how much tokens people got but I did get impression from all the discussions that it was worth good while for most Berachain wasn't worth much — I myself did participate in Berachain's testnet for couple weeks and I was rewarded with handsome 1 token.

I'd say free money is free money, but you probably spent couple of hours doing it, and for 1 token, that ain't much in terms of $/hour

I don't consider anything 'free money' really, there is effort involved in each penny one earns, it could be labor like me doing Berachain tasks or it could be doing something like what you did — what you earned with Lava was you changing RPC, sure there wasn't much manual labor involved but you did something to earn it.

Even it's testnet, that you don't have to spend money to buy any coin or token, there is risk when you use your device for doing tasks on testnets. Your devices can be affected and compromised and if you store your bitcoin or altcoins on that device, hackers will steal your money very quickly.

To emphasize the warning message, cryptocurrency transactions are irreversible especially Bitcoin transactions. Assume if your coins are stolen, either Bitcoin or altcoins, you will lose it forever.

So risk is real and there is no free lunch without tasks, efforts to complete tasks and risk you have to take.

The real thing is that most of the projects these days are riding on the hype. Talking about Telegram, one project (Notcoin) succeeded after running their mini-bot, and the airdrop was good, and participants were happy, which was why it got so much hype. After that, every project started going towards the Telegram Open Network to launch because they knew there was so much hype that they could get so many followers and users by collaborating with other projects that were already running in the ecosystem.

Soon enough, the space got too saturated, and people started realizing that it had become useless because you spend so much time and put in so much effort to promote the projects, and in the end, you walk away with only a few dollars in your hand which isn't worth your time and efforts.

So basically, it's nothing more than a waste of time these days. You might find a couple of projects that are good in the middle, but it's not worth the time you will have to spend to get one good project among the crowd.

Of course, in any case, you will have to make efforts and spend time on it in order to eventually get an airdrop. Creating and using a new wallet for airdrop is easy with Web3 wallet, but you can not do task without your physical devices. Your devices can be infected and compromised by doing airdrop tasks from a scam project that set up traps with many malicious things to attack bounty hunters.

I agree that the advice has a big condition, use new wallets for airdrop, and do it with a device that doesn't store your big or main capital. This condition is hard to have with many people practically.

Right now I don't know what to say again because there has been different trends making people money that when you advice against it, it seems you're a joker that doesn't know what he's saying but all I have to say is that, we should be mindful of how we participate in the testnets and airdrop because there are more of scams than genuine projects.

Only a few wallets meet BERA airdrop eligibility, if I'm not mistaken the allocation is small for testnet rewards, right?
Now every time there is a testnet project with large funding, it will be attacked in some countries including Asia, making their networks difficult to use, so that's how the testnet is now if we are impatient in testing it, we will not get an airdrop.

The trends making people money these days are obvious: you do not know what to say to enthusiasts again because you just do not know the exact one that might pay off. People are just confused now that it happens that the rewards come unexpectedly from where it is never envisaged.

Ever since I began seeing the trend change, One have to be cautious about how they advise newbies because if what they brought to you for advice made a good wave and one happens to advise them against it, it will be in records that you made them fade such airdrop and they would never forgive you for missing out or seek your advise again not to talk of coming close anymore. These are the things I now avoid these days so that nobody would say I made them fade which would have turned their lives around.

As you have advised of being mindful of airdrops engaged with, that is what I do tell them to be careful of these airdrops so that they do not get scammed or waste their time and resources as there are more scams compared to the genuine ones.
