You can since Bitcoin protocol is open source and is released under MIT license.
But you shouldn't because it would be a worthless copy and a waste of time. It won't be the first time either, many have tried this in the past copying the code and even the blockchain (creating a fork) naming it bitcoin-something and they are all categorized shitcoins and 90% of them are completely dead while the rest are slowly dying.

It just that who gonna spend their money to buy your shitcoins, not to mention your coins will not be listed on big listing sites like coingecko and coinmarketcap, making it harder for people to find your shitcoins.

Just as pooya had said, of course you can, but of what use will it be when the robust Bitcoin Network and value still won't apply to the supposed "BTC2". The original Bitcoin network has come a very long way, building trust and adoption over the years despite tough regulations and external influence that didn't seem to work. I will advise you not to waste your time, since it will end up becoming shitty at the end of the day. But if you feel that you have that time and what it takes to create such for experimental purposes, then you do your thing.

Why not you can creat your own shit coin and call it what ever  name  you chose to call it,because the protocol of bitcoin is an open source for any one who is willing and ready to waste money,energy and time.but have this at the back of your mind,no shit coin can get high reputation and the adoption BTC has.

I saw you posted the same thread on the Legal sub. Are you wondering if you will get into legal trouble if you launch your fork of Bitcoin or something? People mentioned that you can do it already, and there're examples of altcoin doing that for years now. I followed one or two forked Bitcoin just because I'm curious if they'll do something unique, not necessarily because I believe they can achieve the same success as Bitcoin. I don't think you'll get result if your main appeal is just "faster Bitcoin" though.

you can and I think there's been hundreds of similar forks, trying to recreate the same thing and mostly getting forgotten afterward, so apparently what you're gonna be doing will just be a waste of time, you can't recreate bitcoin with its massive mining powers.

If BTC were a failure, creating a new one might make sense, but it’s a success, so that idea is pointless. 

We should stick with Bitcoin. There have been forks before, like BCH, BTG, and BSV, but look at how they’re doing now. I’m not even sure if many people still use those coins. Bitcoin is working as intended, so there’s no reason to mess with it.

i do not know if you have heard of forking but that is basically the creation of a new blockchain based on the bitcoin network and this has been created from the past in fact there is probably more than a hundred bitcoin forks by now but you have to remember that there is really no affiliation to the real bitcoin anymore even if it is forked it is a new cryptocurrency and new community, new miners and etc

so the answer is yes you can create another version of bitcoin but i doubt it will garner the same interest and trust as the og bitcoin

I've thought about this a lot myself recently. The problem with forks (and 99.99999% altcoins) as I see it is unless you are offering a completely different architecture with a clear advantage, it will always be better to spend time trying to convince the Bitcoin community to adapt the change. There's too many coins as is which causes a lot of market confusion. And ultimately, for something to work as a currency, there has to be widespread adoption and belief. If you take the same currency and split the userbase thousands of times you're going to be left with tiny fractures and that's obviously not helpful for a currency. The only way to win is to win over the community and get a patch to Bitcoin Core and get consensus from the miners. That's how change has to happen or we will end up with thousands of failed projects each being boosted up by a tiny community with zero widespread adoption.

There are obviously exceptions. For example, I think Ethereum offers enough to stand on its own. Very different usecase. But that's also why ETH would be a horrible choice as money. But Ethereum could still be a great dApp platform.

Four years ago I encountered a coin named BTC2, and it only took a matter of weeks before it died a natural death because it got backlash from the community because its developers are trying to hype it as a better version when the developer got a huge premine.
Since Bitcoin is opensource, anyone can create a Bitcoin clone, but it will not generate support because its just a shadow of the original one, and we have so many Bitcoin clones already with different names.

Yes of course, if you have a good intention of creating your alternative Bitcoin 2 to the crypto community would be much appreciated and I'm sure it would stand in the test of times, if actually your whitepaper is truly developed and not just a cloned or plagiarized copy of what is already existing is also an added advantage.

You should be able to understand that there had been many failed BTC 2 which would be proper for you and your team to do a thorough research why those projects failed and work on that leakage, doing that would be pretty much good.

There is already an altcoin in that name and even ran a bounty in the forum. So, every single thing that a random guy thinks of creating a new BTC and etc. it has already been mentioned in the past and they didn't become into reality. The altcoins market is too saturated at all and before I forget, there have been a lot of wrapped BTCs in so many networks so, there is no sense at all to have that much altcoins that are named and inspired after Bitcoin.

In a free world you are free to do whatsoever you choose to do with the code yet it's far more important that you realise that nobody will ever give a fuck about it nor will anyone who tries to scam communities will such rug pull succeed.
