Deepseek has been making headlines lately, especially after reports that it disrupted the AI industry and triggered an AI stocks selloff in the US. However, despite the hype, its long-term success seems uncertain, given that several countries have already banned it.

Here are some of the countries that have restricted Deepseek:

[1] Italy
[2] Taiwan
[3]  Australia
[4] South Korea
[5] United States

With this growing list of bans, do you think Deepseek has a real shot at success?

Even if some believe it's superior to other AI technologies, the lack of acceptance in major markets due to data privacy concerns could severely limit its reach. And as we all know, once the US leads the charge, other countries tend to follow, making it even harder for Deepseek to compete. In the end, this could just solidify the dominance of US-based AI tech.

honestly i don’t doubt it

it might not take the whole world but there’s still a lot of countries willing to use their platform so i don’t think they will be a total fail besides this will not be the only ai to come out for sure other countries will also try to make their own and make sure it’s the one everyone uses so everyone will be competing anyway

The AI battle is really about popularity, just like OpenAI (ChatGPT), which is widely used and well-known. If more countries continue banning Deepseek due to security concerns, it will only push them further down the ranks. And if that happens, China won’t be winning the AI tech war anytime soon.

We have seen may list of powerful technologies that is even feared for being banned in prominent countries, so this is not a surprise anymore. Deepseek's has been rising very rapidly ever since it came out and the controversy surrounding it makes it a technology that everyone is talking about but bans dont mean it is the end of technology. It might end up being a push for it to evolve, and relocate for global adoption. In the end, these prominent countries will end up wanting to lift their ban and embrace it.

On the contrary, This increasing list (countries that banned it) proves otherwise Grin. I can understand their fear especially when something comes out of China Grin. Having said that, it is cheaper and more efficient than the competition so I believe a lot of propaganda is also going on from established players.

It looks like the US and China always have opposite views, just like with Bitcoin, where China banned trading while the US kept it legal. Now, we’re seeing the same pattern: the US bans it, other countries follow, and if the US hadn’t made a move, it’s likely no one else would have either. At this point, it all comes down to who has more allies, and in this battle, the country with the strongest global influence will come out on top.

Why should we even care about DeepSeek being big in the future? The AI industry is developing every day and the competition is furious.
DeepSeek doesn't have a business model. It's free for everyone. How does it generate revenue? Maybe at some point DeepSeek will embrace the freemium model, with a free tier and a monthly subscription for premium features. I'm sure that the western users won't like the censorship, that is being embedded inside DeepSeek(even if it doesn't get banned in most western countries).

The one you tried was probably the free version, but Deepseek also has a paid version with more features. You can check out the comparison between Deepseek and ChatGPT here.

If you look at it in terms of mobile applications, DeepSeek is available on Android and for Apple devices. Well, if DeepSeek is banned and removed from the AppStore, and the Americans can do this, because they control the only store available for Apple, then the situation on Android will not change.
Even if DeepSeek is removed from Google Play, Chinese and other Asian app stores will still distribute it. And due to the free application installation policy, the .apk file can still be installed from anywhere. Therefore, anyone who wants to use DeepSeek on Android will find such an opportunity. The developers did not limit the list of countries, as the curmudgeon Musk did for Grok.

It is the most effective model for generating revenue as of now, especially related to AI. The more people search and provide feedback, the more efficient and powerful (in terms of market share) any particular AI system becomes. It is a race to capture people's habits  right now and no one can afford to set high prices.

The countries you mentioned didn't ban Deepseek entirely in their country. They banned it from government employers and devices which is understandable. The data Deepseek collects is not something you would want to be in rival or enemy hands.
I don't think this prevents the growth of the software. People in these countries are allowed to use the software and if they see that it's better than all other alternatives they will use it.

Also, bitcoin is proof enough that restriction and total ban of something in some countries does not equate to the death of that thing. If is truly superior and cheaper than the rest, the world will want it more.

Why is DeepSeek banned in these countries? I really need to know the reason it is banned in the United States. I guess they will say lack of privacy or the company that developed the app is sharing information to the Chinese government. I hope Facebook, Twitter and other social media and companies belonging to United States citizens are not the same. Sharing information of people to the government.

it seems that only america's friendly countries are blocking deepseek access, which is quite reasonable... while for other countries that are closer to china, such as asean countries, russia, brazil, and african countries, they have not taken any decisions and do not seem to object to deepseek's operations in their region.

so what you said that deepseek might not be big in the future might be wrong, because if we put those countries on the list of countries that are friendly to deepseek, then the opportunity for deepseek to become one of the big players in the ai industry is still wide open ... and we haven't discussed their domestic market with the potential for hundreds of millions of users.

Several countries and regulatory bodies have banned the use of Chinese technology due to concerns about its impact on national security and data privacy. The story began when the US government began attacking TikTok and calling on its owner to sell it to an American company.

Other countries have issued warnings about the Chinese app without banning it entirely.
In an interview with Bloomberg, the UK’s Minister for Artificial Intelligence, Ferial Clarke, said: “It is ultimately up to the individual to decide whether or not to download the app. But my advice is for users to be aware of the potential risks and understand how their data is being used."

I think there's a bigger reason beyond data privacy and national security risks. I believe it’s more about competition, the U.S. simply doesn’t want to be outshined by the success of a Chinese app. All they do is throw accusations, because if there were really a threat, it would have been reported back when the app wasn’t popular yet. So why are they making these claims only now that the app is widely used? It’s just like what happened with TikTok.

I believe this is not the first time we are having new technology in the system and it's been difficult for acceptance and usage by most countries so therefore the ban of deep seek in most of this countries mentioned isn't new to me and I don't see it that data privacy can actually be a medium to limits it's reach cause alot of technologies are still trying to do better,  But despite that deep seek would be slow to progress but in time everything will be okay cause all of the new technologies follows the same process before arriving to the very state they are in now. But with the Us as head of this I find it very difficult to believe it could survive as well.

In my opinion, even the name deepseek will just become an obscure name in the future of AI but I think what matter is their method in development of AI has opened new horizon that gives us an understanding about how overly inflated the price of some GPU maker's stock. since deepseek is open sourced anyway, expect everybody to create the same thing using the same formula but from different country of origin.

however, with the open source nature of it, you can't really ban deepseek, but banning their websites definitely will do something. because I also see their enforced t&c of collecting data to be a bit too much offending.

I know banning deepseek from, countries can affect the growth. I mean, if countries are not adopting you, then your market reach will be limited. My issue is the fact that the AI has malfunctions. Because I tried using DeepSeek after hearing so much about it, but most times it tells me 'system is busy so I can't even use it to know how helpful it can be.

I see myself switching to another AI to do research. So, they need to even fix their system with the always busy thing. And from my end if they don't continue promoting their AI and if they don't fix glitches, people will naturally go away aside from the ban. So, if they must have a future, then they must be improving.

The application represents advanced technology compared to its American counterpart, so it is natural for America to attack it and try to impose restrictions on it, including encouraging its allies to limit the use of the application and thus trying to prove its danger. This does not mean that the application is 100% safe or that it is somewhat honest because no one knows how Deepseek can use the data that users share with them. At the same time, all the accusations directed at Deepseek can be directed at American applications, especially since they are closed source applications, while Deepseek is open source.

Here are some of the countries that have restricted Deepseek:

[3]  Australia

[5] United States

[3] Australia has banned DeepSeek from government devices only and that means it is still available for public use in the country.

[5] It's not the whole US but New York state only that has banned DeepSeek from government devices only.

Data privacy/Security is serious concern in every country and that's why governments are taking every measure to stop data leakage. But DeepSeek is still available for public use in major countries. If it can improve its performance in comparison to ChatGPT then it's usage will increase rather then going down.

China is a country that loves to invest in other countries but it's doors are closed for other countries apps (like google, Youtube etc). This can be one factor that major countries can ban China backed DeepSeek in future. Recent example is TikTok ban in USA.
