I bought an old S9 last year so I could take some pics and upload them to my Unsplash profile so the world has access to more royalty-free bitcoin images. After I got a few pics uploaded, I decided to turn the old housing into a lamp and hang it from my ceiling. Naturally, anyone can make their own but I decided to sell them on Geyser to see if there's enough demand for people who want one hanging in their own house, garage, workshop, office, etc. Here's what it looks like. I also made a post on stacker news about itWhat do you think, plebs?

Cool project. Although i wonder how heavy is it after you replace unused parts with the lamp. I have concern the carabiner isn't durable enough for hanging stuff 24/7.

I share the opinion with @ABCbits regarding the weight of the object itself, because I personally wouldn't want something like that (especially) if it's quite heavy hanging above my head. Besides, hanging it from the ceiling doesn't seem very aesthetically pleasing to me, but I think it would look much better if it were laid horizontally with a slight downward slope so that it looked like a spotlight. A few dozen of these with flashing lights in colors and you can make a disco for all former and current miners

The empty miner shell is made of aluminum so it's actually really light. I just used a floor scale to weigh it and it says 2.4 pounds which is just over 1 kg at 1088.622 grams. I don't have any concerns about it falling down and if ever I do, I would just use some more robust mounting hardware.

A few dozen of these with flashing lights in colors and you can make a disco for all former and current miners I estimated the weight was not an obstacle because of the empty shell. It will hang there without cracking the ceiling but is it practical for daily life. The light distribution in the hanging image is terrible so your angled spot light proposal could give miners a new use.

I will see what I can do to make some different iterations where they can be used as a spotlight like you're saying.

Doesn't produce much light and looks very industrial. Maybe if you're lighting a work room/office space, or some hardware store... For a living room it's not pretty enough and feels like you hanged some junk there. I mean there are much better looking industrial lamps if that's what you're aiming at. Not to shit on your effort, because the idea was good, but I just don't feel the vibe. It's like hanging an old printer with a bulb inside and calling it a lamp.

It definitely produces a softer light but it lights up my office quite nicely. The idea is for it to look kind of cypherpunk so it wouldn't go in a living room but probably as a light in your garage. workshop, or man cave where you build bitcoin stuff. I appreciate your honest feedback. I guess it's not for everyone.

I'm not sure how much I'd pay for a used phone turned into a lamp but I would definitely buy one if it was cheap enough. It seems like something that could be useful as long as the price is right.

Cool project. Although i wonder how heavy is it after you replace unused parts with the lamp. I have concern the carabiner isn't durable enough for hanging stuff 24/7. To work that lamp in the Asic miner some part will have to be removed which in return will make the whole machine become lighter, I am already thinking about how he make this work, the easier way is to loose the motherboard from the machine and replace with a complete lamp component, someone with less tech idea can still manage to pull this off. Its nice to see this happen, I do have a old s9 that I don't care about anymore, gathering dirty in my store with some other older graphics cards and motherboards, nice try OP.

Looks like a little skyscraper, but as it was said, it doesn't light the room that much, but that is up to everybody's preferences. Great job, OP!

It's something that I'd love to have in my man cave, but if I were you, I'd probably try to add rechargeable batteries in the next iteration of the S9 lamp to make it cordless [I'm not a fan of the $50 difference between the standard version and the plus version, but if its price doesn't exceed $200 with the addition of the components that I mentioned, I think you'll be able to sell more].

Rather than waste and throwing it in the trash, this is a better alternative. Recycle uses like this is a great way to save cost and show creativity at the same time. Many people unfortunately do not see things this way, and that is why they are usually very quick to dispose of any item that they see as no longer useful in their homes.

The idea is cool, it is not aesthetically pleasing but i am certain the idea wasn't for it to be. If i had such i wouldn't put it in the living-room, my visitors would be confused about what's hanging above their head and most of them are not bitcoiners. This would be nice to have in a personal office or man cave, especially where you do BTC work or stuff; good job.

Thanks for the feedback. I am having issues sourcing S9s in good enough shape but I am also working to bring the price point to $100 for the Plus+ version. Hopefully, I can get something made up that the entire space thinks is cool enough to have in their workshop or citadel caves.

I think this is a great use for an old miner. I also think some people are looking for more of a modern industrial chic look than years past. I will see how the market reacts and adjust as needed.

Thanks so much for your feedback. I envision this in more of a garage or workshop space where guys hang out, drink beer, and talk about bitcoin. I will post as soon as I have more updates on the project and can make it more of a home-office piece as well as good enough for your garage. [moderator's note: consecutive posts merged]

This would really look good on one those hipster cafes that want to exude a darkly lit speakeasy vibe to their shops. Pretty awesome project and hopefully, you'll find the demand for this because if many of us here find it cool, then there's someone out there that's going to be looking out for it.

Thank you so much for your constructive feedback. That is EXACTLY what I am thinking of myself. I plan on taking one to the Pubkey in NYC at the end of the month. Hopefully they think the idea is worth buying a few.

Hopefully they think the idea is worth buying a few. how about placing something reflective on the top side where the light going upwards are reflected to the sides instead of going to the ceiling. That's just my opinion and it's up to you if you want to add it to the lamp or not. It is good for someone who wants a dimly lit room where it's not too dark and not too light or in cafe as pinggoki explained. In my opinion, this is good because rather than throwing it out is that you made use out of it.
