The altcoin market has lost a lot of market cap in the last days, and even big coins like Solana and Ethereum went down dramatically. Bitcoin too lost around 10%.

However, there were exceptions:

- Litecoin (LTC): It went down a bit in the first dump wave (down to $110), but now again recovered the same level than before ($125-130). According to CoinGecko it went up 14% in the last 30 days (as of February 27, 2025).

- Monero (XMR): It also decreased a bit, coming from the $220-240 area down to around $210. But again, this is much less than most other altcoins had to suffer - only -4,9% in the last month.

Both altcoins are old, fairly decentralized and unrelated to any scam or short lived hype.

Is it possible that this could hint to a paradigm shift towards solid and fairly launched altcoin projects, after the "Ethereum killer" wave and the memecoin casino?

One thing that I have noticed is that some altcoins have their time. I can remember some weeks ago, ethereum did not really fall. If you check for some shit coins, they even increased.

But the time will come again that they will fall.

Is it possible that this could hint to a paradigm shift towards solid and fairly launched altcoin projects, after the "Ethereum killer" wave and the memecoin casino?
Just like Pi? Because this coin increased recently than fall. There could be good altcoins. But later they will prove themselves as altcoins. The bear market has not even yet come when the altcoins will fall more.

What I have noticed and that we have all noticed is that these altcoins, no matter how good they are, they will get to all-time high and fall massively.

These two coins are among the least volatile in the market. I remember throughout Bitcoin’s bull run many people in the Litecoin subreddit had a doom and gloom attitude because they felt like LTC was severely underperforming despite being one of the most popular currencies with BitPay merchants. Monero also underperformed for a long time.

Maintaining price consistency does not indicate a paradigm shift away from other altcoins. If that were happening, then they should have gone higher than Solana and Ethereum when those coins were pumping.

Both coins are proof of work, have a long standing history of liquidity and active development within their own communities and they obviously are not into the market looking to grab as much money as possible from investors and then run away with all that capital, both coins have basic objectives and features which they intend to use to keep people around  and use their Blockchains.
They do not over--promise and are rather modest with their milestones when comes to their development.
When compared to the gambling market of shitcoins and memecoins, it is clear one is better just to hold coins with have a real use case and have proven to be decentralized enough for their purposes of transmission of value.

It's pretty obviously if you look at the price movements in the long term. Both LTC and XMR haven't yet performed so well in these recent bull run as compared to Bitcoin or Solana. So it would be normal for them not to dump so much during the recent correction.

I mean, just look at these graphs, have you noticed the difference?

XMR

LTC

I have a real belief that Monero will shine in time.  All the evolution of technology makes privacy more important than ever.  But this is kind of nit picking.  It is not accurate to compare Altcoin performances in such short timespans to how Bitcoin performed and call it an incoming shift.  This happened enough times with Ethereum versus Bitcoin but the shift never happened.

HOWEVER.  I believe Monero may have a surprising competition with Bitcoin in the middle to far future.  As I said above, with AI and all other advances in technology, privacy will pretty much disappear in a matter of years for most people.  It is not happening yet in my opinion.  Particularly considering Monero has a much smaller market cap than Bitcoin, which makes it easier to influence for now.

I am not sure about Litecoin as I have never used one. But Monero is a giant killer. It's minable using CPU and truly anonymous. So it makes sense when Monero is able to hold onto it's price point without following the market fall.

So for me, Monero is a very useful coin. It is more useful to me than any other altcoins to be honest. I may not spend my Bitcoins but I wouldn't mind spending the Monero I hold due to its privacy. I am sure Monero will really become a big and useful altcoin in the future.

I won't call it a paradigm shift, but it's just useful.

Of course the "shift" hasn't happened still ... that's why I wrote "incoming". Wink

For me, such a paradigm shift would come in waves. The first wave would be what we may be experiencing now (or not) ... a rather stable behaviour in uncertain bearish times. A second wave could build on the first one, and there we would then probably see both coins return firmly in the top 20 or even top 10. This would be the confirmation for the shift.

But this is kind of nit picking.  It is not accurate to compare Altcoin performances in such short timespans to how Bitcoin performed and call it an incoming shift.

I'm comparing them with other altcoins' (bad) performance in the last weeks, not with Bitcoin. It's of course more likely still that it's a simple coincidence that both coins performed relatively well. For example, Tron also was among those "performing well" and is a fairly normal PoS coin, as is BCH (imo an edge case, neither the most scammy nor the most solid project, I personally don't like it).

However, I see the possible "shift" in a broader context. Solana was the most hyped coin in the last year and now it has basically returned to where the hype started. Ethereum is also performing weakly. And memecoins could have hit the top after the Argentine Crypto-Gate with $LIBRA and the TRUMP token. In contrast, XMR and LTC were underperforming last year but now are returning into the top positions again.

With the rest of your post I agree -- if we take into account that XMR was delisted from a lot of big exchanges and then its price recovered without problems, the outlook for Monero looks quite bright, and privacy at Monero's level is something very difficult to achieve with BTC, even taking into account CoinJoins and Lightning.

I don't think it's happening, in opinion, based on the price history and the previous all-time highs. Bitcoin continues to show that it's the most consistent oldest coin out there since its inception, wihile most of the altcoins just die a natural death over time. Before Ethereum and the likes of XMR, there were some altcoins right after Bitcoin like Namecoin, feather coin etc… look them up and see what happened over time.

However, I see the possible "shift" in a broader context. Solana was the most hyped coin in the last year and now it has basically returned to where the hype started. Solana is a special case, remember it dumped so hard in the previous bear market. It only rose back up due to the memecoin hype and also the fact that it has previously dumped way beyond what was expected. If someone bought solana right before the previous bear market dump, then they are not smiling just yet. If you want to get a clear picture of the performance of a coin or asset. Look at the long term, not just a few past months.

Again, I'm not comparing XMR/LTC to Bitcoin, but to other altcoin groups.

Regarding the likes of Namecoin, Peercoin, Feathercoin etc., they seem to have lost traction in the middle of the Ethereum hype, and never were able to recover. They lost in the attention game in the late 2010s, at a moment which was pointing investors to premined coins with smart contract capabilities (Solana, ETH) and tokens (e.g. DeFi). These coins are struggling now, and it's not unlikely that they will see a decline, like coins like EOS, Nxt or NEM did.

LTC and XMR have instead been able to hold their ground in the long term. Until 2021 they also reached new ATHs in almost each cycle, and in 2025 this could happen again (we still don't know).

So while you're correct that the vast majority of all altcoins are long term bearish, this seems not to be the case for some of them (also called "Oscillators" by Willy Woo), and XMR/LTC are the prime examples. If this tendency confirms, then this is the "paradigm shift" I'm talking about. The result could be a return of LTC and XMR into the top-10 blockchains (ignoring stablecoins and tokens), solidifying even more in the future.

I have known Ltc for long for behaving like a stable coin. It doesn't rapidly give profits and also doesn't rapidly give loses. I have discovered it and think it is fine for a long term investment.

I don't know much about lite coin, but I know that bear wave doesn't affect it much and it doesn't move rapidly. But whenever it wants to move, it will give you crazy returns.

Someone mentioned LTC's solid stance especially in the face of one of the most brutal price action I have seen in recent times. Prior to this market dump, I wouldn't have expected LTC to because even Bitcoin and ETH took very heavy beatings. Solana was already in serious blood and it's a casino so it wasn't surprising to see.

The fact that LTC didn't dump just goes that even though there's always going to be new, faster horses; older experienced ones can still hold their place. It was good to see.

My biggest disappointment was seeing ETH plummet almost to a flat $2000.

Though monero performed well as you mentioned, I do see much potential in the coin. This coin does not even gets mentioned much on places like reddit. LTC on the other hand can be good choice. I have seen some transactions personally being requested with LTC transfer.

You do not see Monero mentioned often on platforms such as Reddit because Monero does not exist for hype and pumps.  It exists for an actual use case.  And like anything else that is actually useful in life, nobody cares about it and everybody gets lost in details and products that do not matter and are useless.

More over, due to Litecoin not being a private Blockchain and still being generally accepted in markets and shops that accept a few other Cryptocurrencies besides Bitcoin, a lot of people avoid using Monero out of fear of getting interrogated, banned or having their funds seized by centralized exchanges.  This CAN happen if you are using Monero and while I believe it is abuse and a strong reason to avoid centralized exchanges entirely, I see why some people rather not use it at all.  After all, what is even the point in using Monero if every other thing you are using is centralized and traceable.

So some altcoins have recovered quite a bit anywhere between 5-20% but LTC didn't — even though it held off well during the dip.

What I would've loved to see is LTC being one of the runners of today's pump so I'm slightly disappointed to see that it's not. Because more often that not, most resilient tokens are usually among the first to start running when the sentiment flips from bearish to bullish.
