Monero, a privacy-focused and decentralized cryptocurrency utilizes RandomX Proof of Work (PoW) algorithm, which is designed to be ASIC-resistant and optimized for central processing unit (CPU) mining. As more projects, now transitioning to PoS (Prove of Stake) to improve energy efficiency as well as their scalability, we are considering how would that shift affect Monero?

Potential benefits of PoS for Monero:

Energy-Efficient: PoS reduces energy usage substantially, which suits the sustainability objectives and also mitigates the regulatory concerns.

Scalable: Quicker transactions and improved blockchain performance as well.

Accessible: The staking mustn't require additionally specialized hardware. Hence, most of the people can participate.

Potential drawbacks of PoS:

Privacy Risks: The reputable information regarding staking could violate the goals of Monero.

Centralized: The critical stakers could limit the decentralization of Monero.

Miner Alienation: Erasing the role of mining could segregate Monero's central communities.

Security Issues: PoS brings several security threats that typically modify the typical progression and require a higher level of development.

Key questions:

Would PoS concentrate itself on a privacy-focused and decentralized project like Monero?

Is the usage of energy-efficient enough to move away from PoW?

Could a mixed PoW/PoS system provide the right balance?

How can privacy be conserved in a PoS ecosystem?

Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Smiley

Monero wants to move from PoW to PoS? If not, why this thread at all?

You have posted it yourself that the algorithm is ASIC resistant and less electricity will be consumed. Then why thinking moving to PoS?

What I think most is that monero will remain a privacy coin and also be using PoW.

I probably missed the news though, because I have not heard nor read news about Monero and the team of developers behing Monero to start to considering to migrate from proof of work towards proof of stake.
Even so, I am afraid staking could undermine the most important characteristics of Monero as project: privacy.
what if the government of the United States or other administration decided to buy much monero and use that stake to slowly take control over the whole ecosystem and trash those privacy features Monero is famous about?
I doubt the development team behind Monero will take such a step...

I believe this thread to be purely speculative, right? At least I never read about plans for Monero to transition to PoS. Even more, the tail emission schedule seems to have been adopted to ensure long term viability even in an altcoin context (where 51% attacks are easier than on Bitcoin).

Okay, let's see:

Energy-Efficient: PoS reduces energy usage substantially, which suits the sustainability objectives and also mitigates the regulatory concerns.
Neither is Monero specially energy-hungry nor do I believe they care about "regulatory concerns".

Scalable: Quicker transactions and improved blockchain performance as well.
This is a myth, while PoS currencies can have a somewhat faster latency (faster block times) because the validators tend to be better connected, the general speed/scalability indicators are exactly the same than with PoS. The decentralization <-> scalability tradeoff remains.

Accessible: The staking mustn't require additionally specialized hardware. Hence, most of the people can participate.
This is probably also a myth. Staking tends to centralize control of the chain to a small group. There can be delegation mechanisms (like staking pools) but they don't really help with decentralization.

Privacy Risks: The reputable information regarding staking could violate the goals of Monero.
Centralized: The critical stakers could limit the decentralization of Monero.
That's a major problem and related: the validator set could cooperate easier to censor transactions and/or gather information about nodes' behaviour. Nodes in PoS environments have to trust themselves more than in a PoW environment because of the weak subjectivity problem.

While on ETH censorship (apart from the blockchain rollbacks) has still not happened, malicious behaviour could be more likely in a typical PoS environment where stakers "know each other" (this applies to BFT-style staking) and are typically online for long timeframes. Mining validator groups instead tends to be more unstable but that's better in a privacy focused environment, as if one validator gets identified he can instantly hide and come back with a new connection.

Miner Alienation: Erasing the role of mining could segregate Monero's central communities.
That seems not to be a major problem.

Security Issues: PoS brings several security threats that typically modify the typical progression and require a higher level of development.
This is true, and the second major problem for a transition. While PoS "seems to work", it's still possible for complex attacks involving identity theft (attacks on the weak subjectivity characteristic) to bring the blockchain to a complete halt.

I personally think at least in the short to medium term there will be no reasons to transition to PoS for Monero. A privacy focused coin should not risk to lose its relative decentralization and censorship resistance.

As more projects, now transitioning to PoS (Prove of Stake) to improve energy efficiency as well as their scalability
Scalability has nothing to do with the mining algorithm, it is limited by the capped block size and the fact that to keep the network decentralized regular people have to be able to run full nodes. The fact that switching to PoS is being advertised as a scaling solution shows how scammy those shitcoins that moved to it are.

Altcoins move from PoW to PoS when the interest in that altcoin continues dropping consistently and that losing interest means losing miners and hashrate which will then open that coin to certain attacks. So in an act of desperation, in order to keep their altcoin alive they move to PoS.
AFAICT Monero is not in that situation yet to make such a bad move out of desperation.

Monero doesn't want to move to PoS. At least not yet. If developers decide to keep PoW consensus, maybe we'll be seeing a Monero hard fork that's PoS-based in the future. It will be interesting to see how a privacy coin would work out with such a consensus mechanism. Zcash is planning to switch to PoS, anyways. It will be less-decentralized, but much cheaper and faster. Who knows what surprises we'll find in the long run?

I probably missed the news though, because I have not heard nor read news about Monero and the team of developers behing Monero to start to considering to migrate from proof of work towards proof of stake.

You didn't miss anything. Developers haven't announced their intentions to make Monero a PoS cryptocurrency. I'm just speculating about the possibility of Monero switching to a different consensus algorithm in the future. It's very unlikely that will happen, considering that the Monero community is quite fond of decentralization. But a PoS-based version of Monero as a hard fork? That's another story...

I don't see any reason why they would want to go PoS. It's not like they are having astronomical transaction fees and scalability issue like Ethereum had. The argument about energy efficiency and all the climate change crusades seem like a scam to be world over. I don't know how such things creeped into crypto too.

POW = Much more decentralization. Claiming that you are a privacy focused coin and then abandoning POW for POS doesn't make sense to me. If Monero want's to get so unpopular, let them attempt making such a move. People who have stuck around it for years because of its current status despite the regulatory hardships and exchange delistings will never look at it the same again. They will see it as a compromised network

Oh, I thought that this is a news and thanks for clarifying that this is just speculative. I think that there will be lesser people that will rely on Monero if this happens. But I hope that this is not even in the minds of the developers, it'll defeat its main purpose of being a privacy and decentralized coin when it becomes POS. Its life will be on the hands of the whales by that time and they can easily take over the control to it by simply adopting and getting as much as they can.

That's what I've thought. The Monero community wouldn't want to sacrifice decentralization in favor of cost efficiency and increased performance. But making a new fork out of Monero that's PoS-based? That might work. If there's enough interest in this, I don't why it can't happen in the long run.

I sure hope the new fork doesn't turn out to be as disastrous as MoneroV. Remember that? Existing XMR holders had their privacy compromised after claiming their XMV coins. The new fork should be launched from scratch, instead of continuing from a specified block on the XMR blockchain. I'm just speculating here. Crypto land often behaves in many strange and bizarre ways, so expect the unexpected. Smiley
