At the moment, when I go to add/remove programs on my windows 11 laptop, it shows ledger live 2.85.1 which means I haven't updated ledger live in a long time.  When I open ledger live, it does synchronize correctly though with the right amount.  That is normal right even with old ledger live version?  Everytime when I close ledger live, it ask me up to update to the newest firmware and I just close it.

The thing is I have not connected my nano ledger s plus to my laptop in many months.  I am a bit concerned it might not work because of that reason.  But there is no harm at all connecting it to my laptop right now with ledger live closed right?  I know when you connect it to your laptop, you should hear a USB sound and then you would enter your pin and then get in.  The reason why I don't want to do this now is because I'm outside the US at the moment but will be back in the US soon.  So I don't want to be concerned now if it doesn't work though my seed is back in the US.  Thus, I would feel more comfortable if my nano ledger s plus doesn't connect while back in the US because I would then buy a new one and get the seed to set it up again.

My questions as of now is this.  I just noticed nano ledger s plus had 3 new firmware updates since 1.1.2.  It had 1.3.0 and then 1.3.1 and then recently 1.3.2.  So previously I was 1 version behind and then 2 version behind but now it has went to 3 and then 4 version behind.  I am behind so many versions with ledger live as well as many months behind.  So I should definitely update ledger live first right now right?  Or do that when I get back to the US when I'm about to update the firmware?  Then I should immediately update the firmware right?  But I should first update the apps like btc first?   I'm still on firmware 1.1.1 and it's on 1.3.2 and I don't want a situation where it's behind so many versions where you might not be able to update the device anymore.  I have not tried to send or receive from my nano ledger s plus in a long time as well so I'm pretty certain if I tried that now, it would require me to update my firmware.

Are there people here who still haven't updated to at least firmware 1.1.2 and still on 1.1.1?  I have to assume very few people right?  And the only people are those who moved their crypto from ledger to another device?  From what I read on Reddit, it seems like it would be foolish to still not update to an updated firmware now?

I'd suggest you switch to another HW asap unless you're OK with Ledger doing stuff behind your back. Are you sure you can still trust their software? I haven't updated my Nano S (granted I no longer use it) but I can run it with Electrum just fine. Just wait until you're back in the US if you're not comfortable with it. I'm surprised you bring your HW when you're traveling, especially if it's your main wallet. I don't think that's a good idea. CMIIW.

Btw, you made so many new threads recently. I suggest you condense your story and post it under one thread. It would be easier for people to read and answer too.

I like to stick with ledger as I used it for a while.

The thing is assuming I have access to my seedphrase and did not update firmware since firmware 1.1.1 and still on ledger live 2.85.1 and didn't update any of my apps like btc and bch since a while back, the first thing I should do is update ledger live right?  Whenever I open ledger live and then close it, it ask to update ledger live and I cancelled this every single time.  So first do that?

Then once I do that, open ledger live and check if everything is fine.  The I connect my nano ledger s plus to it and enter my pin.  Then I should update all my apps first right?  This would be btc, bch and any app I have on it?  Then go and update the firmware right?  I'm many versions behind as I didn't do the update a while back due to recovery so I should it now right?  They did another firmware update not that long ago.

By sticking with Ledger, do you mean with Ledger Live? Well, you'll have to update the apps and firmware if that is the case. Just make sure you have a backup.

I'd suggest you get familiar with Electrum and Ledger if you don't want to ditch your Nano S for whatever reason so you don't have to update the firmware. I guess if you understand the risk then that's that, but I believe trying to find open-source options is a good thing to do. Sticking with something you're familiar with when they are unreliable is not the best choice IMO. CMIIW.

I'd suggest you switch to another HW asap unless you're OK with Ledger doing stuff behind your back. Are you sure you can still trust their software?

I'd ask the same question had you not already posed it--Ledger has proven they can't be trusted, and anyone who values their privacy and security wouldn't go near any of their HW wallets.  Who knows what other shady things they are or have been up to that haven't been disclosed?

I like to stick with ledger as I used it for a while.

And you're certainly free to do so, but man...there are other HW wallets out there that are as good or better than a Ledger and aren't produced by a company that was caught in what should have been a scandal resulting in bankruptcy but instead turned out to be just another day in crypto where the suckers went "la la la, nothing's wrong here" and then everyone's attention turned to the next news item.  I swear.

When I mean sticking with ledger, I mean sticking with using the ledger device and using ledger live.

I have used electrum previously years ago when I kept btc there before moving it to a nano ledger. I haven't used electrum ever since but did like using electrum.

Are you telling me I could actually continue using my ledger in the old firmware 1.1.1 and use it with the newest updated electrum and will have no issue sending or receiving crypto? I know many people said they don't use ledger live and just use electrum with it but I never tried that.  But do I still need to use the updated firmware of ledger?  That to me is the big question as I didn't update firmware from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 because 1.1.2 is where recover is.  And now it's firmware 1.3.2 so I'm even more versions behind now.

Yes I have heard many people at Ledger shouldn't be trusted.  That is why I didn't update my firmware since 1.1.1 since 1.1.2 had recover.  But now it's a long time and firmware is on 1.3.2 and I don't want to be even more versions behind.

During this entire time, I have not tried to send/receive any crypto so I'm not sure if I could even do that now since I'm on old firmware.  I recall people mentioned how they couldn't send crypto on their nano ledger device... not sure which version though but said it asked firmware up the updated first.  So thus I want to have updated firmware.

The thing is a lot of people have said bad things about ledger since the recovery.  But most people who are still using it is most likely using the updated firmware and not 1.1.1 right?  So because of that, I want to update the firmware.  I don't want a situation where my firmware so very old where you can't update firmware like with those nano ledger s devices.  So based on that and that I want to continue using ledger, would you agree that I should update the firmware?  The other main thing here is I do not feel comfortable moving my crypto to another wallet like Trezor yet.  I want to stick with what I'm used to which is ledger.

When I mean sticking with ledger, I mean sticking with using the ledger device and using ledger live.

At some point, you will no longer be able to use Ledger Live without a firmware update. With the old firmware, you will probably have to give up Ledger Live and use other apps.
Also, earlier there were users who had a problem with the firmware upgrade because they had too outdated a version.

Certainly this is too many conditions and worries about the wallet, enough reason to think about another HW manufacturer. It is not negligible that here too you received suggestions in this direction from several different people

Maybe you don't know who you're talking to - if you look at the OP's post history you can see that he's been asking the same questions for years and doesn't even consider the answers he gets. Some things are just constant, jerry0 will always be jerry0 and I've come to terms with that.

What will happen first - his hardware wallet will break or he will get a firmware upgrade?

Now that you say it, I realize it's him. I did comment on some of his threads in the past, and it sounds like he's still trying to cling to hope that his devices will be enough for him.

I guess some people are that stubborn and don't want to change and adapt to new things, although I don't understand why he's so fixated on his Nano S. Anyway, since OP mentioned he's not yet comfortable with a new wallet, just try to buy a cheap one and keep your backups somewhere safe so that if your Nano S dies you won't get into trouble.

Sorry to bump this thread, but since it has to do with the Ledger Nano S I thought I'd chime in and let OP know that Ledger is dropping support for that device.  I'm not sure how I feel about that, but I do know memory size was an issue right from the get-go.

Reading the reddit posts about it is amusing.  It amazes me that people are not only still using Ledger devices but defend the company as if it were a close relative being smeared in the media...or something like that.

Even though this thread was for the Plus variant, I'm pretty sure it'll suffer the same fate as the Nano S, but a lot sooner than what most users will probably expect [the memory space on their other products isn't that much future-proof (Nano X has the most and it comes with the most issues)].

  • I just noticed two months after Nano S reached its end of life, they were still selling it in their shop without any warnings [SMH]: Archive from August of 2022

I still have a Ledger Nano S, which is my only hardwallet
In a few weeks' time I'm going to buy a Trezor Safe 3 or a Model T (I'm still deciding), but I'm still thinking of keeping my Nano S as a secondary one

Is there any security risk in using it only for generating seeds, without using other coins or even using Ledger Live or updating any firmware?
As far as I know, it wouldn't be a problem to use it only as cold storage, but I'd like some opinions
