Despite numerous daily dust or sometimes a few thousand sats dumped to the legacy address of the Genesis block, today some entity transfered a whopping 2.6236284BTC as "donation" to address 1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa, or whatever the intention was for such an amount.

Tx: 416fcc3f798e9c264384f7c6e2d9db459b4c1d84d4f13c7fcc6e673b7753fcc6

I've a hard time not to judge such a sort of obscene transaction. How much good could've been done with such an amount in many countries of this world?

I don't get it why people do this, be it countless small and the few huge amounts of recent time. The "countless" small dust coins bloat the UTXO set, the larger or huge transfers are what exactly? A show off of the filthy rich? I don't know... what's your opinion?

Past huge recent transfers to 1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa (more or equal to 1 Bitcoin):

I don't understand why would you care what other people do with their coins, and why would you even spend time watching this transactions.
If you really want to do something good in the world you can always do it yourself, locally or worldwide, just send your coins to charity of your choice as donation.
Puppet politicians and governments spent a lot more money for endless wars and killing...

Obviously the person who did it is like Cyberkongz who spent $500k to get Rune #2 DECENTRALIZED -- a loon with more money than they know what to do with...  Roll Eyes

That said, hey, it's their money to do whatever they want with it. Like say, um donate to the addresses in my sig?  Cheesy

I don't think it's a "showoff by the filthy rich" since the people sending it are not publicly known in the first place. You have a point though. Those massive amounts would definitely go a long way if actually donated, but I guess every individual does what pleases them with their wealth.

I think the same reason why people transfer dust to that address might also be why others transfer massive amounts. Maybe seeing their 2 BTC or whatever amount in the genesis address feels cool to them, but certainly not to everyone. IMO, those massive donations would have gone a long way in terms of donation, but we can't really talk people into what they don't intend to do.

You're right that the BTC could have been a great help if sent to a charity organization, but people have the right to do whatever they like with their coins, and I believe if it isn't worth the person won't have sent the BTC to the genesis wallet.
The reason could be that s/he is thanking Satoshi for creating BTC footing the benefit the person has gotten through BTC or wanted to get notice just like the person that million worth of ETH to died wallet address just to pass an information across the world.

One thing is sure. We can only guess the intention of the person that sent the Bitcoin until s/he confirms the main reason why s/he sent the BTC.

There's no explanation for such decisions other than the personal desires of the coin owner. There may be those who enjoy seeing the transfer address on BlockGenesis or those who want to thank Satoshi. Often, we're unable to explain everything according to our own logic, so our minds are surprised by things they're not used to thinking about, or things we once thought were unthinkable or pointless.
I agree with the post above, which indicated that there's no reason to be surprised by such news because sending dust to BlockGenesis is a million times better than spending it on wars and killing. At the same time, I don't deny that I hope we'll one day get to know these donators and let them offer us their perspective. In any case, whatever their reasons and motives, they are legitimate, and no one has the right to oppose or criticize them in any way that offends their owner.

A show off of the filthy rich? I don't know... what's your opinion?
I think there could be 3 reasons because of which some people might send such amount.

First reason is to show generosity as many of those who send to that address are the ones who made so much profit only thanks to Bitcoin and that's the reason they want to give back something.

Second reason is to get attention/fame/.

The third reason is to get profits or to sell their products.

It's probably their own way of honoring Bitcoin or the Genesis block, the starting point of everything running right now. Of course, you can't do that if you don't have much. So, yeah, the ones who did it are indeed filthy rich, but it's not necessarily showing off. Nobody knows them anyway.

Or, I hope not, these could be erroneous transactions.

The third reason is to get profits or to sell their products.

What do you mean? You're sending a significant amount you can't anymore retrieve. How is profit made out of it?

I don't buy the "its a rich person showing off" thing, that would be a stupid way of doing it by burning valuable money that can be used a lot better! But also I checked some of the other addresses that received smaller payments in that same transaction and I couldn't find anything out of the ordinary among them (like protocol abuse and attacks like Ordinals) which would have made sense because such people do crazy things like that to advertise their scam!
Maybe I need to dig deeper, but I don't like wasting time...

If you have many bitcoins that you got easily in the past, you can donate it to Bitcoin Genesis Address, that can be considered as burn. It's similar to Bitcoin donations to Bitcoin forum years ago, and these donations are appreciated.

The last donation to Bitcoin forum is from Claymore years ago.
Thanks to Claymore, the first Donator in quite some time.

I don't note Bitcoin genesis address in my wallet or my device, and I think there is zero chance for me to make an erroneous transaction like this. It is intentional transaction, but we only don't know reason behind this.

2 bitcoin is a lot of money, a fortune with many people and nearly zero probability of making mistake with big transaction like this, especially sending it to Bitcoin Genesis Address.

It may be a new style of proof of burning.
I hope we don't see any memecoin or token based on donations to that address.

The amount of outputs in the payment, mostly of smaller value, looks like it might be a faucet paying out various customers. The smallest outputs are for 30,000 sats, which happens to be the minimum withdrawal amount allowed by FreeBitco.in. As many might already be aware, this website has had all sorts of problems lately. It’s just a theory that they were involved, but looking at all the strange things happening with them recently, it wouldn’t be too surprising.

I don't understand why would you care what other people do with their coins, and why would you even spend time watching this transactions.
Usually I don't bother what others do with their coins, except maybe when some outstanding transactions happen. It's just curiosity, especially when I can't quite wrap my head around it.

I see these transactions because I have a watch-only Bitcoin Core wallet full of combo descriptors of the so-called Patoshi blocks and because I can and curiosity (see above).

If you really want to do something good in the world you can always do it yourself, locally or worldwide, just send your coins to charity of your choice as donation.
Sure, there's no good unless you do it yourself. I get this but not quite the point here.

Puppet politicians and governments spent a lot more money for endless wars and killing...
Vote against it and have a strong voice for a change, that's the least one can and should do.

Obviously the person who did it is like Cyberkongz who spent $500k to get Rune #2 DECENTRALIZED -- a loon with more money than they know what to do with...  Roll Eyes
Hmm, I'm not in this inscriptions or Runes shittery, but I assume this fool can at least sell it to a greater fool or suffer whatever loss he deserves. This is different to coins which are immobilized by throwing them at the Genesis block.

One thing is sure. We can only guess the intention of the person that sent the Bitcoin until s/he confirms the main reason why s/he sent the BTC.
I don't expect this to ever happen – donators, surprise me!  Grin

Now it has 102.97495184 BTC and it means there are people who have sent more than 52 bitcoins to Bitcoin Genesis address.
https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/addresses/btc/1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa
Yes, and the four transactions I listed contribute little more than 34.5BTC of those nearly 53BTC and where made when Bitcoin had 4- to 5-figure dollar rates, so quite considerable values.

It's probably their own way of honoring Bitcoin or the Genesis block, the starting point of everything running right now.
I've to assume this, too.

The most recent transaction I listed is indeed very different from the other three that it has 61 outputs of which the one to the Genesis block legacy address is the largest. Me too, I don't have the time to dig deeper for now.

If you have many bitcoins that you got easily in the past, you can donate it to Bitcoin Genesis Address, that can be considered as burn. It's similar to Bitcoin donations to Bitcoin forum years ago, and these donations are appreciated.
It's only a burn if Satoshi Nakamoto has discarded his private keys completely. We don't know, we likely won't ever know for sure. I don't expect Satoshi to ever consolidate any coins "donated" to blocks they mined in the beginning. I do consider those coins as burned, even when technically they aren't.

Donations to this forum are a completely different thing, not comparable to immobilized UTXOs "on the Genesis block" or similar.

It may be a new style of proof of burning.
There's no proof in my opinion. You can't prove Satoshi has discarded the private key of the Genesis block. It may be likely but that's all.

I hope we don't see any memecoin or token based on donations to that address.
We've seen a lot of shit thrown as spam into the blockchain. I wouldn't be surprised as stupidity is a constantly growing property, to exaggerate a bit.

I don't buy the "its a rich person showing off" thing, that would be a stupid way of doing it by burning valuable money that can be used a lot better!

I am not buying it either.
It's satoshi, sending payments and the change is going back to one of their addresses.  Grin

It looks like my theory about it being FreeBitco.in that made this transaction was proven correct. Somebody posted this withdrawal transaction on their thread:

Following the largest output, which is most likely the change address, leads to bc1qfdh66p7vdlc4qhk9f52z89v62yq8hy28qku7h2. That address then makes a payment in the transaction 9536d1fc01a9c2ecedce0c8267b15b755ce8348838bd4dacc4ef7f07ce44afd4, which also includes three inputs from address 3DpHxqfmiFtyykdGhYcVcKnJGodUgkd2A4. This was one of the addresses used in the payment which sent 2.6 BTC to Satoshi.

I didn't want to open another thread and thus bumping this one.

What's going on lately with larger "donations" to the legacy address of the Genesis block? Here's what my, apparently watch-only, wallet has seen lately after the March 2025 huge "donation" (lots of smaller dust and sub 500k sats "donations", too).

Past March 14th, 2025 large recent transfers to 1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa (more or equal to 500,000 sats):

Sure, not as impressive like what I've compiled in the initial post's table, but the two bigger ones are still large amounts to throw away and freeze 'em to the Genesis block's legacy address (which btw Satoshi never used).

Updated thread's title to be more general and fitting to new updates.

And we have new large "donations" (updated 2025-07-27):

I didn't do any further digging about the origin of inputs or if some "donations" are related to each other. Some entities are quite generous, but to whom? I don't expect Satoshi to claim and move any of the coins.

If such entities have coins to throw away, why not donate to Free Software Foundation, interesting Bitcoin related software projects or charity? There are more than enough opportunities to do something better with coins than immobilize them on the Genesis block. What a waste...

That is a good point. But I have seen people speculating about such donations from 10+ years now.
However I would see also really plausible the classic idea to "reward" genesis block (that like a "public space" from the scratch, were people have send funds attaching message and so on in OP RETURN).
Otherwise, I would not be surprised there are also "some errors", wrong copy paste and so on...

Yeah I also don't really like how they're throwing away Bitcoin under the guise of donations. It's basically like burning it, not donating it. Ideally donations through social organizations would be much clearer, more useful, and more accessible to those who really need it. But in the end, I know it's their money, and they have the right to use it for whatever they want.

We can't dictate that.
