It worked better in the past but since Small improvement regarding activity / "Show others your online status", this page misses many online users because of their customization on Online Status.

Perhaps stats for online guests were disabled.

When I made this thread Hidden pages/ features on the forum. I noted this page as "Check who is online (both Guests and users)" so perhaps in 2020, stats for Guests were available, I am unsure about my memory and what I did in 2020.

There is extra information for you.

The list is updated every 5 seconds.
Note that the list won't list the users that are online but decided to turn off the feature on their profile page, so the real numbers could be bigger.

You cannot fully see who is online as this is a centralized forum and everyone in this forum is given freedom so anyone can turn off their active status. In that case you cannot see their status even if they are online. Why do you want to know this matter? I don't think it's too important to track how many people are online. I don't know if this will be of any use to you.

But from the link provided by Mitchell you can see the online status of some users who have not hidden their online status yet.

Is it just me that thinks number looks kinda low - 205 Users (61 Hidden), and does anyone know what was the all time high?

It wouldn't cause harm. It would've showed visitor stats so there isn't a reason for theymos to turn it off for guests. I wouldn't mind checking the link some times. If it's showing real stats why's there a problem showing online guests unless there's too many bots giving off wrong info.

Thank you for this, looks like it is also color coded by rank with Legendary being blue and the others representing a particular rank.

We can only guess how many guests browse the forum at any given time, or say in a 24-hour period - but it seems to me that there are many more guests than registered users. It may not be the best comparison, but on the ATT (check at the bottom of the page)  forum the statistics of people online show a large disparity between registered users online and guests - where there are about x60 more guests than registered users online.

How accurate that is is another question entirely - maybe that's why the admin has disabled the number of online guests.

Personally, I don't see why such information should be hidden, unless it's something that most people don't know about.

Theymos disabled many features, sometimes he announces it with reasons and sometimes he does change secretly.

It is not surprised me if theymos disabled it when he saw it is unnecessary or something related to security. I don't know as I am not a programmer and don't administrate any forum especially big one like Bitcointalk.org forum.

I never knew that there was a feature like this on the forum until  now. There was a day I was researching through forum if I could find out the number of guest visitors that comes to the forum everyday, I didn't see any information like that neither did I saw the this link you just posted. What I only discovered was the general forum statistics which shows how many users are currently online but it doesn't list out their names (names of users online) just like the names are listed on the link you provide.

While on the forum home page, scroll to the bottom and click on More Stats.


And you will see many informations of the forum's activities, the number of users online matches the number on the link you provided and i think that link should be put on that stats section.

I assume it will reflect those online at the time of checking, or until there is a refresh. You may show up for those 2 minutes or a few minutes after to someone who checked.

The usefulness is a little limited as this is a traditional forum and users do not typically use it for communication or need to wait for someone to be online to send them a message. But it can have some other applications for those tracking some stats.

Okay, so I just checked opening the forum with my account and then opening this page that shows online users as a guest user using an incognito page from my mobile's browser.

It takes 15 minutes for your status to go from 'Online' to 'Offline' after you open any page of the forum and then either close it or stay idle. For example, if you open the forum, surf a few pages, and then close it, or you keep the tab open but don't surf anymore, which means no refresh. After 15 minutes, your status will become 'Offline', and your account won't show in the list of online users who haven't hidden their online status.

So, even if you were online for a second, you will still be 'Online' for 15 minutes, and when it comes to writing posts, if you are making a post that takes you more than 15 minutes, then your status will turn to 'Offline' in the middle of composing your post because there are no refreshes and you are considered offline by the forum software.

It's useful because it shows activity but the question about accuracy's true. The parameters are probably going to result the outputs invalid because of inactive users. What's the change point in the online report if users haven't clicked to determine online or not ?

So, even if you were online for a second, you will still be 'Online' for 15 minutes, and when it comes to writing posts, if you are making a post that takes you more than 15 minutes, then your status will turn to 'Offline' in the middle of composing your post because there are no refreshes and you are considered offline by the forum software.

If it's 15 minutes it's showing incorrect outputs for online users who're idle for longer reading & writing posts. It isn't accurate but can be checked if users are curious.
