I received a strange letter from bittrex.com

I was surprised because I haven't used my Bittrex account for a long time, but today I received an email stating that I still have a balance of over $15,814.26.

I checked the sender, which was

and based on my research, it seems legitimate. The email included a link, but of course, I didn’t click on it so I would not fall from a possible phishing.

So, I posted it here in case anyone else has experienced the same thing and can offer some advice.

By the way, I checked my Bittrex account, and there was no balance shown. If this is indeed a scam, I will move this thread to the Scam Accusation Board so that everyone who reads it will be aware.

I will attach a screenshot of the email - please evaluate it.

Last I heard of Bitrex they were shutting down last year after filing for bankruptcy and we're sending similar emails to users. But looks like there was an email breach and some users were receiving automated emails asking them to visit the link added to withdraw their funds, this was a scam.

If this is indeed a scam, I will move this thread to the Scam Accusation Board so that everyone who reads it will be aware.

I do not think this quite belongs there. It's not a direct scam accusation against bittrex as they may not be involved in this. This should be more of a warning in a different board for users not to fall victim for this scam attempt.

I have receive from this sender "Bittrex Global bittrex.com" since 2021.. but this time its coming from "Bittrex Global granicus.com".
So they are different, but I search about granicus.com and they seemed legit.. but this looks like a scam.

The email provider can be legitimate, this doesn mean the email sender is. One red flag is enough to classify a message as a scam, this has many of such flags.

I'm almost certain the website link in the email will ask about your seedphrase at some point.

Your email + what's in your account should match—you should be able to see the proclaimed amount in your account as well and that isn't the case here.

In addition, according from bittrex global, these are the only email addresses they use. Anything else should be steered away from:

Thanks for sharing, but that’s obviously a scam because it includes a link you have to click to access your account. If you know you didn’t have any balance before Bittrex shut down, it would be foolish to believe that your account suddenly has funds.

Be smart mate, don’t let greed take over, or you might end up getting phished.

Scam for sure. I haven't received any notifications from Bittrex for a long time.
Otherwise, they have also stated which email addresses they will use to communicate with users, anything else can be considered an attempted scam.

We only use email addresses ending in @bittrex.li, @bittrex.bm, @bittrexglobal.com, or @bittrex.com; emails from any other email address are not from Bittrex Global.

I am about to post this one on scam accusations because I've received the same email as you, OP. But it's a scam, an obvious one, because that is the provider/domain where the email has come from on my end, too. Because what I know is, I don't have any money left on my bittrex account. Maybe Bittrex's database has been compromised, or these scammers behind this email have accumulated all of the email addresses that we've used from somewhere and they are taking advantage of those uninformed folks. I hope that none will be fooled by these cons.

I am 100% sure this is not email coming from real bittrex exchange, so don't click on links and don't enter seed words.
On one of my old temp email addresses I received exactly the same message, and I don't even have bittrex account.
Scammers are usually sending bulk phishing emails to everyone who owns leaked addresses.

Thank you for posting the warning here. I don't have a Bittrex account, but by chance I received a similar scam message from a site claiming to be for cloud mining.

A few days ago, I also received a strange message. I received a message stating that I had a balance of 1.3 BTC on the cloud mining site, and they gave me a link to access my account and withdraw the balance. Obviously, this was a scam, and I don't remember signing up for that site in the first place. It was definitely a phishing link.

I received very convincing messages about my account too recently. The scammers posed as Mozilla instead of Firefox, though, claiming that my account was accessed from a random location, and they encouraged me to log in and add a 2FA. The sender address is very similar to Mozilla official e-mail so people can miss them if they're not careful, not to mention the message looks quite professional too. I'll be on the lookout to see if my exchange's e-mails have been used as a phishing cover, too.

Rule of thumb says that if something sounds too good to be true, that means its some sort of a scam and you having $15k that you don't know about definitely sounds too good to be rue,

Bittrex has been sending emails for a long time now to all the people that have accounts there (they are sending them to me as well) and few dollars left and I guess scammers decided to use that as a bait.

As long as you don’t click the link, you’ll be fine. That’s the root cause of phishing. once you fall victim, expect the worst.

Thanks, this confirms that it’s really a scam. I already had a feeling it was, but I was just hoping it might be real as $15K is a lot, after all. Thankfully, there are many experts here who helped confirm my doubts.

You must have heard a whisper inside your head telling you this is true. Or perhaps you were crossing your fingers when you did the research hoping you're indeed blessed for being the recipient of a manna from heaven.

Normally, anybody would dismiss this right away as scam. First off, Bittrex is already dead. Second, you don't have that money. Third, if Bittrex were still in operation, that huge amount would less likely end up in your account because the platform is centralized. It isn't a non-custodial wallet which means stray funds stay there for good.

Thanks for sharing op. I guess the aim of the scammer is for a victim to follow the link to a clone website where he would be required to enter his login details and you know the rest.

Maybe OP is just checking if anyone else received the same email that turned out to be legit. From OP's statement, it seems they've already accepted it's a scam, and this is probably just to confirm other people's experiences. At least they didn't click the link! That's where the real danger is. Instead of getting free crypto, you might end up losing yours.

What is it an "unclaimed balance"? This is just a non-sense...how did you "claim" a balance?
Of course, no doubt this sounds just as a scam. (yes ask a moderator to move in the proper section).
Another check =
if you access on exchange and this don't show what they are claiming on email yes its just a scam. if you have doubts ask to their support.

also, if you inspect the link of this email you can easily see that they will show up a fake login page, or a place where they can save/stole your login information.
